  • I made plenty of videos on my channel about the german checkout speed, how will it compare to the ones in the states?

I'm in the southern USA and I love to do what's done on the right in Aldi. Bag my own stuff (so it's done right) while they scan. My goal is to not be the one slowing down the line. I'm out faster and challenged myself.

    Always found this fascinating.
It’s why Many “budget” stores (Aldi and Lidl) in the UK have several long barcodes on multiple sides of the packaging - the idea being that so long as the item crosses the scanner, it’ll catch at least one barcode.
Another part is the packing area past the checkouts. This takes the reliance on fast packing away from the customer (for example, if they are elderly), because the scanner can put all items back in the trolley to be packed at the customers pace in the packing area. This keeps the line moving at the scanner’s pace, not the customers.
When I was in high school in Economics, we had a talk from a representative from Aldi, who described in detail all the things they do to keep the checkout times to an absolute minimum. It’s a key part of their business to keep costs down, by allowing high sale volumes through maximum efficiency.

You are meant to put your things into your cart again in Germany and rearrange things on the packing table that is near the cashier. You are not actually meant to bag things on the till.

Target and ALDI are not equal... you would have to go to a Stop & Shop or a ShopRite to find an equal store to an Aldi and an equal checker... a checker at an actual supermarket in the US is going to be infinitely faster than a Target checker

Target isn't a grocery store so the comparison is not equal.

That's why in the US we have self checkout, and 10 item or less lanes. For those who are too rude and impatient to wait their turn.

Honestly, even watching you and other people bagging at the cashier's without a cart gave me anxiety. Using a cart is not "a new technique", it's what you're supposed to do as a default unless you buy just one item.
Why do you think that space at the cashier's is so small? It's because you're NOT supposed to bag your stuff there. The only reason there's any space there at all is so items don't fall off if a customer takes a second to place their cart. Or for the people with just one item to have a space to keep it while they pay. But not to try and bag there.
It's also way too high to comfortably bag - note how the table in the actual bagging area is much lower - so you can comfortably access the bag's opening that's on its top to put your stuff into your bag without having to stand on tiptoe. To be able to comfortably do that, the surface you place your bag on needs to be pretty low.
Seriously, just take a cart, you'll not feel stressed and it's fast and helps keep the queues short or at least moving quickly, so every saves time. Then bag at the bagging area like you're supposed to in peace and quiet and at a comfortable height. Unless you're the only customer, you'll still save time despite having touched every item twice. Because you will have spent so much less time in the queue.
