    Many non-Germans complain about the cashiers being too fast. Actually, you should always use a shopping cart. after the cashier has scanned the items, you simply put them back in your shopping cart. the cash desks are also NOT made to pack the items into the bags at the cash register. There are extra packing tables after the tills for that. So you don’t block the cashier and the following customers. 🤷‍♂️

      The shopping cart trick is a very good point actually. I fould maybe one day do an update video!
      In the 5 years I have been living in Germany I never actually used a shopping cart, with the tricks used in the video I never actually stopped anyone in the line. Only in Portugal, where I shop for 4 people and buy a lot of food and use my parents car.

      I learned the hard way. The first time I went to Germany I was pretty taken back. The next few times I went, I was ready! Lol I did exactly that - just put it all in shopping cart, paid and then moved to the side, out of the way, and placed it all in my bags.

      No packing tables in Lidl France.
      It's hilarious, esp. when the women do their usual female thing of having their payment card floating around in the bottom of an overfull bag instead of being organised and having the card already in hand or in an easily accessible outer pocket. And then there's the ones who pay by cheque 😤
      I've never, in my 20 years living in France, seen a man pay by cheque.

    ALDI was one of the last supermarkets who introduced the automatic barcode scanning, because the cashier had all the prices in memory and were already almost as fast as the competing supermarkets with scanning checkout, that was amazing to watch

    There is a huge glitch that was never patched out.
    Put everything you have on the belt BUT make sure you put bakery items last.
    The cashier will be stuck trying to figure out what you got then look for the code for those items, and manually typing it, giving you at least 1 min time to fill your bags.

    • @mrchops
      @mrchops  Год назад +14

    • @leDespicable
      @leDespicable Год назад +5

      Only with newbie cashiers though, those that have been working for some time know the codes of the bakery items by heart and manage to see what's in the bag with just a glance. Never ever have I encountered a cashier that took a minute to ring up those items, even the newbies took less time lol

    Here's a "cheat code" for you. Take the IKEA bag and use it as a liner for the shopping cart(not hand basket). When at the register place your items onto the belt sorted from heavy(Cans) to fragile(produce), place your prepped shopping cart at the end of the register and simply have the clerk throw your items into the cart as he/she/diverse scans them. Now you have all the time in the world to pay for your grocery haul while probably still beating your high-score. Once you have this method down you can "speed run" your entire grocery haul since most stores have fragile items close to the entrance of the store while most of the heavier items tend to be closer to the register. Good luck!

    • @mrchops
      @mrchops  Год назад +6

    • @TheKaiserHeld
      @TheKaiserHeld Год назад +2

      Well, you have to analyse the time spend on getting a shopping cart, emptying it and bringing it back compared to without it to actually have a legit comparison of a speedrun strategy. Actually the "Shopping cart" strategy depends on several factors such as map, map size, amount of NPCs who are allowed to use the register, amount of players on the map, amount of players on the map which uses the shopping cart and etc.

That is one another reason to prefer the small corner shops. It might be a little more expensive, but people are friendly, have a chat with you and the next person is still in the shop looking around and not stressing behind you. Plenty of time to pack the bag.

      Just chuck your stuff back into the shopping cart without thinking too much and then pack as leisurely as you want at the packing table after the cashing area like the system is intended to.
      That way, it's fast (because nobody holds up the line trying to bag at the cashier's) AND not stressful. And even though you have to touch your items twice, it's still more efficient time-wise because you wait less time in line.

    I thought this was going to be crazier from what I've read but I can see with the tiny shelf they put things on, items could pile up quick. In my part of the US they don't have the shelves and scan things directly into the cart and then you go to the table to bag it. That's where the traffic jam can happen, people packing up slowly.

  • @Rechnerstrom
    @Rechnerstrom 7 месяцев назад +1

    Pro tip: don't try to put your groceries in a bag at the checkout. Place your empty shopping cart at the end of the checkout and just put your goods back in the cart. Now you can be as fast as the cashier, speeding up the process for everyone including the other customers. To your back there is a large table where you can sort things from your cart into your bags after you have paid. For even smoother process organize your wares when putting them on the conveyor. Large and heavy first, small and fragile late. You don't want your croissants crushed by a sack of potatoes.

    0:51 in Sweden, cashiers always start scanning the next person's groceries as soon as they are done with the previous one since every store here has a double belt and a splitter at the end. Seems like very few "mainland" European stores have those which blows my mind.

    • @fipsvonfipsenstein6704
      @fipsvonfipsenstein6704 Год назад +1

      At least the belt splitters were also common here until a few years ago. I don't know exactly why they were abolished - probably because customers without time pressure were still too slow and then sometimes even checked the bill and/or even the change.
      Customers complaining about an incorrect bill, or because the change was not correct ... well that´s a big nogo (for the companies).

      @@fipsvonfipsenstein6704 they have these new ones here that have a plastic wall you slide into a slot, then the person behind you has their stuff pile up against the wall, then when you are done packing you lift the wall, and all the next persons stuff slides down to the end, they can put the wall up after their last item is scanned so the next persons stuff doesn't mix in with their own. It's hilarious because no one notices the wall divider and start panicking and packing super-fast when the next persons stuff starts coming down the chute. They are bewildered when they see me packing nice and leisurely while the next persons stuff stays separated from mine. I have to show them how the divider works then it clicks.

    As an ALDI worker, I HATE our speed requirements. We are way faster than half of our customers, and often end up having to wait for them to pack their stuff before we can continue scanning. This can take up to 25% of the total time spent at the checkout. A neat little trick we use is stopping the counter when waiting for the customer to pack, however this only satisfies the stuck up higher ups and does not translate to any real higher efficiency.

    The craziest thing is, they already start counting the small change before you even pay. They just anticipate that you'll give them a bill (don't even try paying the exact amount - you'll annoy the cashier and the people behind you). And yes, cash is still king in Germany, unfortunately.

    I hate when customers slow down my checkout line by SLOWLY packing their stuff (I'm a fast scanner but we have a belt on the table for the items and next customer has space while the first is still packing), then realize their wallet is at the bottom of the bag and they have to search for it. I could have checked out 1 other customer by the time they are done paying. Pay first, pack later. Have your wallet ready in your hand. Also, put items that roll (bottles etc.) POINTING FORWARD, not sidewards. PLEASE. It's so annoying when an avalanche of bottles piles up at the scanner because they're rolling with the belt 😬 You're messing up the cashier's scanning per minute quota. Bottles and cans pointing forward, not standing. Do not stand them on the belt. It hurts when heavy 2 liters bottle of coke falls on my fingers. - german cashier 😂

    In the US as soon as you walk into a store you have someone greeting you trying to make small talk. Have to stand in an endlessly long line. First thing they ask is do you have a loyalty card or store credit card if not then they have you sign up for one people waiting behind you wishing you a horrible death. All your God damn coupons. I just want to go in a store get what I want and leave as quickly as possible without talking to anybody. Way too much ass kissing in US retail stores so much so people spiral out of control if a low paid retail employee doesn't smile at them. And lastly keep the damn receipts that piece of paper is going to get you your refund then you need to keep it. Nobody returns anything anymore without a receipt. But there are thousands of Karens willing to cause a biblical scene because they can not get a refund on a half used worn out item because they don't have the receipt.

      Totally different perspective! This summer I had the amazing oportunity to visit New Jersey and all I could say is that people in the US were just so nice?? Yes, random people making small talk, maybe I just got lucky to have cool cashiers? At emptier stores I had full conversations! (something that doesn't really happen here)
      However, at target once (I actually made a video about it) it was just horribly slow, but that's because I could only pay with cash and couldn't go to the self checkout (with card)
      Anyways, cool to hear from your side :)

      It also depends on the other customers. My experience is, that the cashier is very friendly and patient, while the customer behind the slower person is being rude, or impatient.
      I personally usually just patiently wait, while giving some space. Those 10 to 15 extra seconds are just not worth fussing about.

      Ich war selbst schon Kassierer. Was die wenigsten wissen werden: es gibt eine SCANRATE die du zu erfüllen hast. Diese steht jeden Tag auf deinem Kassenprotokoll. Waren immer so 100 Artikel pro Minute. Und wenn du darunter bleibst, wirst du vom Chef angekackt! Egal, wie sich die Kunden damit fühlen. Du musst so schnell sein. Dabei kommen die meisten mit einräumen gar nicht so schnell hinterher. Besonders seitdem es hinter der Kasse keine Bänder mehr gibt... Völlig bescheuert. Einkaufen in deutschen Supermärkten ist der pure Stress!

    Why not have a conveyorbelt with dividers at the end, so you can check items for next client before the first havn’t packed yet?

    • @mrchops

      Dividers at the end would definitely make things easier! hahah There is always space problems there so the cashier has to organize sometimes some items as seen in the video.
      I really can't tell you why this specific Aldi doesn't have them while other stores DO have them hahah

      A "discount store" e.g. Lidl or Aldi is pure science! From book lengths formulas, to every psychologic trick you can imagine.
      You enter the store you start the game. Aldi want you out of the store as fast as possible. No music, not only to save money, also to get you out as fast as possible, no music = no one listen.
      Why do you think is the end of the checkout is so small and the start so long?
      Aldi want you to pack your stuff as fast as possible, to increase your packing speed, the stress is wanted. Long Line behind you and other customers items are coming.
      "Why not have a conveyorbelt with dividers at the end, so you can check items for next client before the first havn’t packed yet?"
      Because, that would you slowed down.

      @@DrachenKaiser hm okej, that makes some sense I suppose.
      Not sure I'd agree on it beeing better for the store or the customers really, but I understand the logic behind it better I suppose.
      But I wouldnt call it more efficient! because it's not, but it puts a social pressure on the customers to be efficient, so that in turn can lead to it beeing rather fast.
      I don't think people would do it quicker if it was established where I live, people would just take the same time they do and tell the cashier to slow down!
      So not sure their model would work here in sweden, people feel they have the right on their side to take their time, so no social pressure on them, the pressure would be on the cashier to open another cash register rather or they would just stop shopping there.
      I wouldn't feel any pressure having to pack faster because of this method at all, difference of culture I guess.
      Cashiers often move between registers here, if people pack slowly since they can't really hurry them up, and the social pressure is on the cashier not the customer packing.

      at both of the aldis i work at we recommend getting a cart so that cashiers can quickly put all of your items in the cart and then you can take it to the bagging area and pack at whatever speed you like. it keeps the lines down and keeps product prices cheap because aldi doesn't need to hire as many employees since they're so efficient
