  • Howdy! I am Christi from Little Salty Homesteader, and in this video, I am showing y’all what’s going on in my North Texas vegetable garden in late July. The temps have cooled a bit, which has created the perfect environment for some plants to thrive. The local bees have been buzzing all over the basil, which is always great to see! And squash bugs are JERKS.

I’m in Plano, Tx and this year my squash just didn’t make any fruit. My tomatoes look like yours. Just having trouble with everything.

@@patriciawalker1787 the weather this summer has been super bizarre. Usually, I expect everything but the okra to be fried, but it’s all still green and growing. So strange!
I had a banger of a tomato harvest in May and June, so these I’m just keeping alive until fall 💕.
      Good luck with your garden!

I think the secret to growing squash is to plant early before the squash bugs, vine bores and powdery mildew hits, starting in June. Sometime in June things seem to go south and most things just can not handle the heat and bugs. Tromboncino squash is supposed to be resistant to vine bores. I bought some seed but due to visit to hospital was not able to plant any to see how well they do. Could send you a couple of seeds if you want to try. Your tomatoes are really looking good for this time of year. Keep them alive and they should start producing in the fall.
Do you have luck direct seeding broccoli this time of year? I was going to start my broccoli in a couple of weeks but start them indoors, and as soon as they sprout move them outside with afternoon shade and plant them in ground sometime in mid to late September.

@@growyourownfood7814 thanks! I don’t have a trellis for the tromboncino, but I appreciate the offer!
The early purple sprouting broccoli and spring broccoli rabe are both direct seeded, but the regular broccoli I am growing I started indoors. Hope that helps!
