It's been mentioned before, but the primary sample in this song is a fragment of the melody from "The Breeze and I." Actually it was originally titled "Andalucía" written by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona, probably in the 1930s. When lyrics were added it became "The Breeze and I." It's something of a standard in jazz music. To be specific, the sample is from Laurindo Almeida's take on "The Breeze And I" from the album Classical Current released in 1969. This is also the album where Nujabes got his sample for "Aruarian Dance." The song sampled in that case is "The Lamp Is Low" written by Peter DeRose and Bert Shefter in the 1930s. Apparently "The Lamp Is Low" is based on a 1899 composition by French composer Maurice Ravel "Pavane pour une infante défunte" (I didn't know this until just now, and now that I listen to it, I can hear it). Wow, I love tracing musical history, just wish it was more transparent, but doing the digging is part of the fun I suppose. Anyway about the Evan Awake song itself, sounds great. BTW I encourage people to do youtube searches of all songs/artists I mentioned and do some digging of your own, it can take you to a lot of different places. Especially in today's sample-heavy music, it's always illuminating to know where it comes from, and what inspired it and in turn, discover more great music.
Nendra Affandi thank you for bothering to read : ) I just want people to dig deeper, find out where their music comes from, find out what influenced it. It can only lead to more great music.
Not to take anything away from Nujabes (he was an incredibly talented musician) but it honestly kinda bums me out to hear so many of my favorite Nujabes songs contained samples from other artists and aren't his own melodies. He's fully entitled to do so, I just wish I didn't notice it so often in his music
Almost 7 years later when I first found this piece and haven't been able to recall the name of it in my head. THANK GOODNESS I saved it in my playlist. I will now continue to vibe with it
It's strange to think that without the internet I might not have been able to discover such wonderful songs. Sometimes I take this digital age for granted. Not right now though. What a nice tune.
I've finally found my people ever since stumbling upon this whole genre. I was starting to think that I would never find new music that would excite and touch me in that way only music can, but between this and rediscovering the joy of classical music I'm pretty much set for life.
This is a true love lost theme, so beautiful yet sad at the same time. Beauty intertwined with tragedy...embarassing but I cried to this on xmas day a few years back over a bad breakup. Whereever you are Trâm, I hope you know I still love ya!
These are some of the best music videos to find on youtube. Great music (I came cause I saw Evan Wake but didn't recognize the song), great art, and great youtube comments. None of that silly shit you'll find elsewhere. On top of that, most every one who finds these songs enjoy music the way I do, and it makes me glad I'm not the only one who finds music to be so beautiful, relaxing.. comforting. I'm glad there are others out there who truly enjoy the beauty of music. Thanks for sharing!
You said some true words brother! For being happy you need to be lowly and you have to develope a sense for good things in life. There are millions of great people out there, tons of great books, thousands of gold tracks and the thing is: it doesnt matter how much we effort to get familiar with all these great things - it is impossible. But once you´ve reached this state of mind shows you have already set one big part of the base for happiness. You just have to focus on the right things!
When I thought of this song I saw my friend on a platform as she played the violin. The violin could never stop playing for if she did the resonance of the universe would end and thus would begin the untangling of everything in the universe. The music was the only thing keeping it from untangling itself. I'd travel far and wide to see if there could be some other way to save her from playing the magical violin forever as it needed to be played by a real person on the crossroads of life and death. Eventually as the song ends, I open a portal and push her through it, having the violin fall into my hands as I took her place to play it. Her peace of finishing was etched on her face as she fell away from me, back to our world, back to where she could make a life. I had never liked mine and deemed it unworthy, so the violin of the universe was mine to play. To play this tune forever alone on that platform of rolling trains, passengers of the dead going to heaven in one way, and the other, new souls going to earth to be born...was my destiny. That's what this song did for me then in 2011 and still now. What a song.
Still jamming to this at 2:01 in the AM care free live laugh and love, live and forgive, live and let go. LIVE above all else and prosper, create peace, be peace live in harmony with yourself...be yourself.
that's the power of music ;) A moment ago, as I'm a news writer, I was thinking about how dark the world has become and a sense of anxiety came over me. I played this track randomly and in 2 minutes I came back to the truest conclusion... life is beautiful and people are too, no matter what. That's what music does too me and I am forever grateful for it.
Mentally dancing away, if only it were appropriate to somehow drift away into some happiness I haven't found yet, but long for so long because it was always so close~ beautiful song, beautiful sound of soul~
It's 1:51 AM in the the dark, near sunless, ice-cold December here in Alaska. I'm up late night finishing a final paper for school, and I have work in just a few hours. But when this song breaks down at 2:01-2:11, it simply feels like everything is okay. That's the power of hip-hop.
I think the key it;s abot being happy that in your life you met a beautiful part of it. When I first met Nujabes I was on my teenager bullshit phase, then I heard Nujabes and opened my mind and since then beautiful things started happening in my life. I'm not sad that I will not met all of the good music, I'm happy that I met the good part (: Jun is actually a great part of my life. Hope one day I will meet him up there and have a long talk about what he did on my life. Peace and love guys~
clicked for the art. stayed for the music. goodness this is awesome. even though this is the first time i heard it, it feels so nostalgic already. strange...
word. nothing touches the jazz nujabes put into his productions. there was a realness that he expressed that i haven't heard since. only a few can create that sound: hirotosama, emancipator, and sometimes nomak.
as a producer myself I have to agree but I think what nujabes did that made his music sound more original was playing the Keyboard over his already amazing beats to add another layer of Liveliness
i cant fuckin believe im not the only one. Maybe they play this song more than once, but i was watchin their livestream and thought, im the only one whos attention this song caught xD. you sir made my day
You're right, it does feel kinda nostalgic, but I think it's because it sounds a bit like one of those tv shows from back in the days, something like The Love Boat. ;)

Tsushima Masaki That's the point. It's awesome if people could recognize and appreciate their favorite musics in bigger picture :)
The drum is also a sample from
Impeach the President by The Honey Drippers (1973) !

Same feel, man. It's the music that you discover on your own that makes it so nice and beautiful.
Yea man! It's got a nice magical brightness that Jun's music had
This is simply beautiful, incredible.
I've nothing else to add. It's always a good moment when you can enjoy good music the same way with people all around the world.

Sounds A LOT like Aruarian Dance from Nujabes. Especially those "old" violins crescendo. It's brilliant.
1171domino Ahah nice ^^
I think it's the same sample!

I'm loving the old-style record popping in the background. Who knew an inherent flaw in old/dusty records could add so much to music? :)
I'm so glad I clicked on this, super smooth I like it a lot!!!
