SubhanaAllah this is soo enlightening, I've been confused about teraweh for years now, mainly because my family's opinions of it are conflicting. There are members of pray it religiously, there are those who don't at all (because they consider it bid'ah), there are those who actually mocks it and there are some who prays whenever they feel like it, ya3ni "recreationally". I now have a better understanding, jazakaAllah khay 🙏

@Y Dw I think brother because they had the tradition of reading more than a juz/spara a night so that they read a whole Quran in a month. I don't know but I'm just guessing that is the likelihood. Also they used to recite slowly and take long sajda and ruku.
As a Pakistani in UK alot of Pakistani masjid read so fast that there is no peace and tranquility in salah/namaz but when I read with arabs' alhamdulillah such peace and tranquility and sakoon you get from taraweeh. Hope that helps

    Salam.
This is not authentic that Umar(R) launched 20 Raka'at Taraweeh.
Prophet Muhammad pbuh never prayed 20 Raka'at. There was no existence of Taraweeh in the time of the Prophet Muhammad pbuh nor in the Khalifah of Abu Bakr(R). All they did is Salatul Iayl, Qiyamul Layl, Salatul Tahazzud at home. Prophet Muhammad pbuh, said, Man Qama Ramadana, here qiyam indicates to all the above mentioned Salawat. Those three nights he performed Salatul Tahazzud at dead/deep night(Kharaza fi Zaufi Layl....). In this respect Hadith of Ayesha (R) is the best solution. And
    Allah Swt knows best.

Common, stop this is disgussting every time this type of discussions start within the muslim community before the Holy Month of Ramdan all the islamic scholars start misguiding their followers about salat al taraavih 8 or 12 or 20. Every year on salat al taraavih debates starts. Every individual is responsible/answerable for his/her own graveyard so why to look in their personal acts its between ALLAH and his slaves.

He is Sayyiduna Amir Al Mu'minin Umar Al Faruq Radhiyallahu ta'aala anhu. The man whose destiny changed from the prophets assassin to one of the Prophets closest men and subsequently his family through marriage. As the brothers have stated, listen to understand. Fault finding is not acceptable when we're here to benefit from knowledge. Also, in addition to this necessary and informative clip, you should visit the Qur'anic aayah on the matter of taking the lead from the noble companions, especially the great khulafa-ur-rashidin whom the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam had classed as stars. Those who understand how stars served a purpose to travelers in the night and especially the desert, will understand just how necessary following the companions are in relation to the Prophets sunnah. The ayah of Surah Tawbah is 100. quran.com/9/100 - this ayah helps to understand just how lofty their statuses were in Allah's Divine court. Allahu A'lam. We beseech Allah for his guidance and mercy always.

Umar ra made ijtihad regarding this act. All the rest of the sahaba accepted without argument. So thus became ijma. Again in Medina ijtihad was made and 36 was implemented. Again no disputes no arguments ...ijma was established. Is anyone trying to say that all the companions were not aware of the riyawah of 8 rakah . Ayesha ra could have said that everyone is going against the practice of prophet SAW but again no disputes no. agreements. Thus YQ says that only last 100 years someone comes along and says..no ..20 rakah is bidat . This practice of sahabah just goes to show that this mantra of following Qur'an and hadeeth is shallow in practice ....as you can't explain quaran and hadith without recourse to Amal of sahaba (as they saw what prophet SAW was doing and what he meant rather than what he said ) . Otherwise what happens is you take things out of context and the issue of taraweeh so clearly highlights
