Still very relevant 6 years later. I just starting using FreeMind and this video reinforced my decision to use mind mapping software in general and FreeMind in particular. Thanks for the video.
oldnavyflyguy Awesome. May I suggest "Freeplane?" I made the transition to Freeplane from Freemind about 6 months ago. It's free. It's related to Freemind. Super cool. I use it every single day in my position in tech writing. Let me know what you think.
Thanks for making this set of instructions. Your instructions are much easier to understand than are the instructions/help file that came with the software.
Imagine it's 2023, and my lecturer asks students to submit assignments using this software. I'm not complaining, but it's 2023, and this video is 14 years old. We already have better mind mapping software. But your video just saved my ass. THANK YOU.
Great tutorial. I've just downloaded freemind and had never used a mind mapping programme before and had done a few on paintbox. I can now get the ones redone and get better mindmaps. I want to be a novelist so this is going to help a lot with plotting each chapter and so on.
Great tutorial Mike, I' just downloaded FreeMind 10 minutes ago and practically had no idea how to use it. This tutorial is a no brainer, got me building mmaps in minutes. Good job!
Well I'm really, really pleased to hear that! It was my pleasure to make this tutorial. In fact, it was so much fun, I might do a recut... up the budget by 1,200%, add some CGI, theater-quality Dolby surround sound, 4K resolution, render in 3-D, VR... plus add 3 prequels and a few sequels... yes, I like where this is going!
Excellent tutorial. I enjoyed watching it and it helped a lot. I just discovered mind mapping today through an application for my android phone called Thinking Space which I believe is compatible with FreeMind. I did my first map to chart out my plans for building my business and I think it is so cool to have software that can give you a visual of what you are thinking. I will have to give FreeMind a try and see how I like it on my laptop.
+Maira Garcia What was helpful? Your laugh, my comments, or the tutorial? Before answering, please create a mindmap to organize your response and then paste into the comment thread below from the html output. You will be graded based upon the clarity of your story arc as well as the ratio of metaphors to similes included in your outline. Seriously, though, glad it was helpful. :)
Thank you for your kind words! This tutorial was kind of a trial run for my new screen-capture software. I'm encouraged that you liked it. The next RUclips videos that I plan on making will be an in depth audio-editing series regarding Logic Audio (Mac), Jeskola Buzz, (a freeware program that I run on Linux), and Audacity (freeware). I hope that you're liking FreeMind. Cheers!
Thanks so much for the excellent tutorial. I loved the option for exported files able to be linkable and placed on websites for visitors to play with. Love it.
It really is...I'm even using it to outline a production strategy for my next electronic album! It could be great for storyboarding a film or play, too.
it is 2016 and this is still a relevant Application for me. It is helpful in "collecting my thoughts", but I use MindNote from the iPad, but I export the file to PC using MindMap As I am a computer guy, the XML open source is additionally helpful in "program writing"
That's exactly right, mezcel. I use it in my work constantly (actually, I've moved to Freeplane... same thing, for the most part) and especially like using the keyboard/arrow combos to move giant swathes of info around. Quickly. If you don't do that now, you should play around with that functionality. I even use this to map out process flows and different things. Thanks for the tip on the XMLs...
I found insert to be terribly inconvenient. You can change the key mappings in Tools->Preferences click on "Keystrokes", scroll down to the section marked "New node commands" and change the "Add Child" key to whatever you want. I chose Tab. Then reassign "Add Child Mac" to something. I chose Control-Alt-A. You can also change the "standard node style" to bubble in the "Defaults" section of the preferences.
You got that right. Next level: dump the .pdf into Adobe Acrobat Pro and add audio annotations. Password protect with the phrase "boomgoesthedynamite." Send to boss. Get the promotion.
... What in the hell group project are you having your class work on? lolz, seriously though, GREAT tutorial. Most of the software tutorials I find seem to rather blow like a nor'easter, so glad this was worth the time, thank you!
+Nathan Holley Interesting. Next time, I'll create a tutorial on how to create tutorials for software. Bwahaha. Regarding the class project... it was a "Basic Writing Skills for Meteorologists" seminar, and the subject was Northeasters. Double bwahaha! Thanks for dropping by, Nathan!
@jonceballos - Yay, I just leaned how to do this! To stop them all going to one side, drag the node you want to move to the other side and place it at the BOTTOM of the other side's nodes, then keep pressing and drag it up to the position you want. Make sure the TOP of each node you are skipping over is HIGHLIGHTED (not the left or right) and the moved node will be put where you want it.
Hi Mike, Thanks for the tutorial. Only missing how you got the oval to appear in order to move the nodes freely, by dragging and dropping - here is how it is done - firstly save the mindmap you are working on, then go to preferences which is under tools - then select behaviour - then select enable node movement - restart your freemind programme and now an oval will appear and you can drag and drop your nodes freely.
@jonceballos - forgot to say you were dragging the node's handle to move them if it made all the others move. To rearrange the order or change sides, you drag the node itself; not its handle.
I agree a million times. Have you tried Freeplane, Rinat? I'd really suggest you give that a go. It's all I use these days. Thanks for dropping by and commenting!
Great. Hey - if you do, drop by here again and let us all know if you liked it or not. I'd be curious to hear back. Or message me. If we don't hear back from you on this thread, we'll just assume that you have mapped the majority of your brain, exported to .pdf, and no longer need to discuss the application. Also, I just noticed that you name anagrams to "Train Bears." In case you are wondering, THAT'S AWESOME.
Hmmm...good question. I'm also running Ubuntu on another machine, but haven't installed Freemind on that one yet. Let me take a look and see what I can figure out.
+Nathan DeGioia You cut 'em open and they're like York Peppermint Patties. Unfortunately, you can't dehydrate or smoke penguins to make jerky, but if you like mint jelly, I suggest you sprinkle a little shredded penguin on your toast for a festive holiday breakfast!

Hello, I think your tutorial is very helpful! thank you for posting this! A little question though: I work on Mac, and when I press delete like you do it does not work. I also attempted to use the "delete red cross" above the trash can in the tool box but it does not work either... Do I have to set up something in preferences?
Lara Plowright I am glad the tut was helpful. Thanks for the feedback. Are you trying to delete a node, or an icon? The button you're pressing removes any icons that have been added to a node.
Still rocking this software 15 years later! Thank you freemind!
Do you know how i could find it??
@@pagelbagel1597 it's on the Microsoft app store
I miss the day that these type of videos were "the thing" to do on de internet. Usefull and right to the point.

Thanks for this to the point tutorial! I got here knowing nothing about Free Mind, and now I can be productive. Thanks.
Thanks for this. You make a really good teacher - clear, easy to understand, just the right pace, nice amount of detail for an introduction. A+
You should do more tutorials. Your voice has a calmness but knowledgeable expression. Thanks for your help!

Hey thanks for this useful tutorial, I think you have a great voice to listen to and a pleasant explaining style!
Thank you!! for explaining it sooo well! Right tone, right timing, great voice too! Easy to follow, thanks again!
Very gentle introduction, just what I was looking for. Thanks so much for posting this!
Thanks for sharing. I have the program, but didn't know how to use it. Now I can see so many possibilities!
Helped me make a decision about which software to use. thanks.
For some reason, I really, really like old tutorial videos like this one. Btw, thank you for making it !

I just downloaded Freemind last night. Thx so much for the nice, simple tutorial! :)
My favorite unintentional ASMR for years now
Thank you. That was exactly what I needed to watch to get a feel for how to use this program.
I laughed so much with your comments! Thanks, it was really helpful! :)

You got it, Anthony Newman!
Thanks so much for the excellent tutorial. I loved the option for exported files able to be linkable and placed on websites for visitors to play with. Love it.
This is a brilliant tutorial. Not too flashy but really explains the software well. Thanks.
Very good presentation, especially for introductory lesson!
MH Boring Well, I do my best to be boring without being too boring, MH Boring.
Excellent tutorial! Very complete for an introduction.
Thanks so much for dong this... I downloaded the software without any idea on how to use it!!

This is a great tutorial, Thanks! As an update, to insert a node click the "Insert key" instead of Tab, (it must be a new feature).
+tonyadearaujo Thanks for contributing wisdom to the comments here! We salute you!

Fantastic tutorial. Very easy to follow. Will come in very handy to plan and develop ideas. Thanks
Thanks for the tutorial. That was extremely helpful. I'm deciding between FreeMind and XMind as an outlining tool for the novel I'm writing.
Thanks very much. That tutorial was well designed and shows an academic approach behind the scene.
Hi Ben,
Go to preferences under tools, then select behaviour and tick the box next to enable node movement. Good luck
I'm new to FreeMind. I appreciate the help!
Bigdaddy Englishking Certainly. Try Freeplane, too. It's the jam.
I just went and watched it. That's incredible. I suddenly have the desire to make some machinima...
Excellent tutorial. Now I know how to use it. Thank you
Thanks so much for this tutorial, really helped me.
Thanks a lot Mike. good tutorial, simply and clear. Attention, for winwdows is not the key TAB but the key INS to add new item. Bye.
This is one of the nicest comments yet. I'll keep on sharin'!
Thanks for the Tut. Will be using this software to help with my open uni degree.

Thanks for sharing! Really helpful 'How-to'-Info
Sigurd Longardt Thank you Sigurd! Check out Freeplane. ;)
Thanks for this. Quite applicable in August 2019.
My pleasure!
Thanks for the feedback, Torodiamo. I'll try to remedy this in my next tutorial. Cheers, just the same!
Thanks a lot, your tutorial was to the point and very clear. It helps me a lot.
@jonceballos - forgot to say you were dragging the node's handle to move them if it made all the others move. To rearrange the order or change sides, you drag the node itself; not its handle.
I wish all software explanations were as succinct and precise, thanks
THANKS for the info! Seems very handy creative thinking projects.
Three things: I live in Clemson, thanks for the tutorial, Freemind is sweet, and Clemson took a beating last night to USC
Thank you sooooo much! This mind mapping tool is a blessing!
I agree a million times. Have you tried Freeplane, Rinat? I'd really suggest you give that a go. It's all I use these days. Thanks for dropping by and commenting!
Thanks, I'll check it out!

Thanks! To get it in one take was a challenge. I had no CLUE that I would more than 20-30 views from my classmates. Really!
2019 best option still…
thanks a lot
Try Freeplane, Ronald... it's newer, better... Glad you stopped by!
Thank you for this brilliant tutorial
hamza drissi boutaybi Absolutely.
From Germany

Awesome tysm for the vid! This will help me out in Pathophysiology for sure! Thanks again!
an excellent video documentation. extra points for the dry sense of humour!
You got it! I guess I shouldn't wait 4 years between tutorials!
Excellent video. Extremely useful introduction, thank you. :)
Thank for being humble. Fairly useful tutorial. It's explainable, he's German, or I was seeing much bad. -by Englishman from latin america.
IT's explainable. He published it in 2008. Today he uses missiles and holograms to do it. - From that In pain,Misery, and No_dragon-slayers
The use of jokes is a giveaway. I am not German. XD
What a awesome bit of kit. 10 out 10
Will post other comments as I progress from being a useless numpty to an expert on Freemind !!!
Steve M
Thank you for the simple tutorial.
@KatkaSch Thanks for your feedback! I think you can just press "TAB" to add as many bubbles as you need. Does this help you?
Great, thanks very much, very useful, clear, detailed tutorial, much appreciated.
Your projects sound fun. I want you as a teacher.
lol thanks alot. really helped me for a Biology project
Mind map + PDF = genius documentation.

Awesome tutorial, very well done
Thanks for your help on this, Rajesh!
Hmmm...good question. I'm also running Ubuntu on another machine, but haven't installed Freemind on that one yet. Let me take a look and see what I can figure out.

Great video introduction to the software, thx alot!
Thanks a lot for your informative tutorial!
Thank you. I had to re-record the tutorial 10 times!
Great video! I am going to pass along the link to my students. Out of curiosity, what application did you use to create it?
That's quiet helpful! Thanks a lot! :)
Ehra Dela Cruz That's quite awesome to hear! You're welcome a lot! (:
Thank you for this tutorial. I found it very helpful.
Good luck ;)
+Larry Linnus You are welcome, Larry!
Nice vid - I am using Windows and need to use "insert" button instead of TAB - took awhile to figure out!
Thanks, very helpful.
Barry Lazar You are welcome.
Excelent men! Thanks for the contribution!
Ricardo Parente Absolutely! Hope you enjoy using this awesome app.
OY! I should make a tutorial for this. When I'm done with my current ginormous writing project, I'll hook this up.
