Regardless of who the challenger was, by 1975, Fischers fear of defeat compelled him not to defend the title. The idea of defeat repelled Bobby. Which is unfortunate because I believe that even by 1975, Fischer was still the best player in the world despite not playing competitively for 3 years.
Your incorrect. Besides Karpov admitted that when he became challenger he didn't see himself as able to defeat fisher at all. When it was delayed Karpov won 5 super tournaments against the best in the world. That's when Karpov believed he could combat fischer on equal terms and a chance to win.
KARPOV really wanted to play FISCHER. What did Fischer reply. Impossible demands to avoid the match we all knew that. Only Spassky he wanted to play. For 20 years not playing since he won the TITLE . Spassky again. Obviously FEAR on his refutation.

When the contract said Karpov World Champion, Fischer Challenger, Fischer wanted that changed. Karpov's team said no. Fischer left. It wasn't out of fear. Karpov was not going to give in to any of Fischer's psychology warfare. Karpov saw what happened to Taimanov, Petrosian and Spassky in the Soviet Union when they lost so he certainly wasn't going to let that happen to him. Maybe looking back Karpov would have agreed to Fischer because the Korchnoi match was a living nightmare for Karpov in 1978.

Korchnoi would have won this match if he just stayed with the french defence. Karpov couldn't make any headway against it at all.
Similar in 1978 he switched the Pirc / Benoni type opening in the last game, which was not the best for that moment.
