A great video. I remember as a child in 1967 standing on US Route 23 in Lowmansville, KY waiting to catch the Detroit MI to Pikeville KY Greyhound. We would stand beside the highway and flag the bus down. They called them "flagstops" back in the day. I have no idea if Greyhound even has flagstops today or not. You would pay the driver directly. I as a child was so happy to see the bus approaching and was even happier when I saw it was a Scenicruiser. My mother could have cared less what kind of bus it was. Our trip that day was roundtrip from Lowmansville, KY to Paintsville, KY. 27 miles each way. I knew that our return later in the day would be on this same bus with the same driver. The bus would terminate in Pikeville, KY and then return to Detroit, MI. The driver for that portion would drive from Ashland, KY to Pikeville, KY and return the same day. It was a run that was in high demand as the driver was at home each night. I remember the seats in that bus and you have recreated them spot on. Thanks so much for sharing this video.
Wow. This bus is awesome. My Dad was a Greyhound Bus Driver. I took my first trip with him when I was 7 years old - from New York to Boston - on a Scenecruiser. I sat upstairs by the Tear Drop. You've recreated what I remember riding in. Hope I can take my Dad on your bus. He's 83 and in great shape. He'd love it!
I remember riding a bus like this with my mom and sister when we were kids! We road the Greyhound bus from Washington State back to W.V. back in the 60’s. Since thin I’ve always wanted to drive a Greyhound bus. I drive for a local charter bus company here in Florida part time and for a local school district. Greyhound was my inspiration for wanting to drive a big bus since I was a child. Maybe some day it will happen. Love you’re bus.
What a great view inside the 1962 GMC Greyhound traveling bus 🚃 !! I never been on that kind of a Greyhound 🚎 bus in my entire life al all !! GMC certainly knew how to put the bus 🚎 together just right !!
Wow! I remember riding on one of these with my mom. We were going to Richmond VA to visit my grandmother. Sitting up top was the coolest thing! Thank you for these videos.
Brings back memories. Drove for Greyhound for twelve years. drove the cruiser for about five years they made freighters out of them and used them till about 1980.
Wow, looks just as I recall. My dad drove buses 42+ years, the first two with a predecessor company & the rest with Greyhound. Occasionally I would ride with him from the station to the maintenance shop. You mentioned the skylight, it seems I recall dad mentioning that Greyhound had a lot of maintenance issues with them. Leaking, and too much sunlight, straining the AC system. It seems in later years that the skylights were coated with a semi-opaque finish. Keep up the good work.
Once again Tom you've hit a Grand Slam. The seat fabric, cab color, pax information decals are all on spot. I first thought you were a "Magician", but; now I know you are truely a "Miracle Worker" ! This is a real 4-OH job as we say in the Army. You are truely "Mr. Super Scenicruiser". Keep up the Fantastic work. Sincerely Santo A. Chase Colonel,USA(Ret.)
WOW, Tom, what an awesome restoration of a bus that sure brings back wonderful childhood memories for this old guy!!! Sigh...the closest I'll probably ever get to owning the real thing is the two Corgis that I have in my display case. Hope I get to see your Scenicruiser someday in person! Thanks for posting these great videos!
Tom; Looking at your video brought back some great memories. My dad, LB Dismore, was a driver for Greyhound from the late 50s into the early 80s. I made many trips with him, and it was always an unexpected treat when he was assigned a SuperScenicruiser. I can remember him having a seat cushion that he always carried, since the driver's seat was pretty uncomfy! Look forward to seeing your work someday! I have some clients around Peoria and also plan to attend the Blytheville gathering. Terry
Amazing restoration work! I used to ride these from Redding Calif. to Klamath Falls Ore. and back, when I was a kid to visit my grandparents. -Late '50's through mid '60's.. We had really nice Greyhound bus depots in Redding and K. Falls too.
I saw that on RUclips. It was quite something to revisit those times when the scenicruiser was king of the road. There's only one experience I had that could upstage it. And that is the Trailways 5-Star Golden Eagle Luxury Service, replete with red carpet leading to the entrance way and a beautiful stewardi waiting to greet you aboard, well designed interiors, with galley and curtains to finish off a first class trip. I went, by the way, from Dallas to Houston. Those were the days!
The Silver Eagle destroyed my taste for Greyhound the first time I rode one. I would have loved to travel on the Golden Eagle 5-Star, but did not get the chance. Compared with the Silver Eagle, the MCI 7 is a big nothing. Trailways did have a few MCI 7's; I never rode on the Trailways version, however. And, I definitely prefer the Silver Eagle over the Scenicruiser. I have also been on both the Greyhound and Trailways versions of the 4104. Again, I prefer the Trailways version.
awesome to see someone restoring something out of the ordinary, especially with only 1001 made (i believe i am quoting you from another video). looks great
Beautiful job. What a piece of history. That cruiser and all the pd series busses are the sports car of coaches even in today's standards in my opinion. I would love a GM pd 4106 to play with. Kind regards Eric Dee
My Brother and I used to ride one of these beautiful buses when we were youngster's. Dad used to put us on the Tarzana Greyhound to Thousand oaks Ca. to visit our mother who lived there. Our father and stepmom lived in Lake view terrace around 1964. My Bro and I are now in our early 60s
Thanks for the comments. I researched extensively, and attempted to restore as accurately as possible. I grew up in the old car hobby, and still have several anttique cars. I became bored and disinterested in just cars. I wanted something different. Something that included more history, and could get instant reactions from people. These immediately spark memories for so many people. Strangers tell me the most interesting stories about riding these old things. Original examples are rare.
Yes, she runs. We made the 2000 mile round trip to Amarillo/Adrian, Texas in April 2010 for our "Scenicruise 2010" gathering with no problems. We had ten Scenicruisers show up. Next gathering is April 4-6, 2013 @ the restored Blytheville, Arkansas 1930s Greyhound depot. Open to any antique coach (pre-1980)
Runs good. Been to Memphis, and to Texas. Will be headed to Blytheville, Arkansas April 4-6, 2013 for "Ghosts of Highway 61 - Dixie tour 2013" gathering of antique coaches.
@pd4501771 i think im in that same boat, i have seen so many 70 chevelles and mustangs it almost seems boring anymore. im glad youre keeping such good record of these things, of all the ones you said that still exist are any of them in north carolina? also roughly how many nationwide would you say are still restorable? where can i find a list of the existing ones? you have officially sparked my interest in these things, and i feel like if im ever gonna own one it needs to be soon
do you think .. back in the day ..if the step down to aisle signs were not there .would the pasangers get confused ??.and the flairs were thay for the driver to shoot up in the sky if they got lost .and if there was 2 first aid boxes would the second one be called the second aid box ..just askin
A/C is powered by 8V-71 drive engine. No seperate pony motor. When 4501s had twin fours, A/C was ran off one of the engines. No third engine.......but I like your humor !
that looks pretty nice and i'd say accurate too, but i have to know what made you want to do it original instead of a camper or something of that nature??
From what I've read, Greyhound's people were inpressed with the domed streamlined passenger trains of that era and wanted a bus that had the same type of appearance.
Five stars. Man, she's beautiful. So, I'm wondering, Tom...With all those new vinyl seats and fresh paint inside, do you think she smells like the day she rolled off the assembly line in Pontiac Michigan?
I look forward to meeting you in Blytheville. Yes, I have seen a few combo cars that remain. We have a section in our upcoming book about the freighters. Photos, history, etc. We are taking pre-orders for the book if interested. It will be printed in March 2013 also available in Blytheville. Take care. Tom
Great job!!!! What did you have to do to be able to use the Greyhound paint scheme and logo on this coach? I want to restore a 1982-1985 TMC/MCI MC-9 to its original specs and paint (Greyhound red, white, and blue), but don't know where to start. Please help me out!!!!
wow that bus has come a long way! in fact, i found my friend has an old bus, its an RV type though, single deck, most of those driver controls look very similar to his, he thinks its a 1958 but we dont know what model for sure, but it has air brakes, auto transmission, and a V8 Ford engine, its on my channel if you want to check it out pd4501771
Thanks. Please see info below regarding our next antique bus gathering. Would like to meet you, and here some old GH stories about 4501s. Take care. Tom
Tom, I will make the gathering next April. It's so good to see a real restoration, seen too many amateur chop jobs on the internet. Have you come across an old freighter version? They removed the rear 13 seats and installed a bulkhead, with an outside access door. Ran some in regular service, I once took a rock band on a college tour, used a freighter for their stage equipment. Hope to see you in April.
@citzie Where are you guys from? We are planning a gathering of antique coaches in Blytheville, Arkansas in April 2013. Check back for details. If your Dad likes old buses...that would be the place to be. Or stop by my place anytime, I would be happy to give him a ride, or he could show this want-a-be how to really drive a Scenic !Take care. Tom
may you please tell me the interior ceiling heights in the upper and lower areas? im just loving these buses, curious if a 6'2" guy could stand up throughout. thx
@pd4501771 Perhaps for charters, although you would have to either change the livery, which for the 5401 is sacrilege, or Greyhound would wish to reacquire the coach and you would make a killing off the sale.
I'm not sure modern bus passengers would appreciate the current lack of A/C ! ! I think my insurance man would have the big one, if that idea was ever presented !
That is looking nice! Noticing the comments on the A/C, I was wondering how the A/C is setup in the PD4501, and is it powered by the drive engine; or was there a separate engine for that?.. Funny thought... Separate HVAC/accessory engine in the 50's for a PD4501 would mean 3 engines for one coach. hahaha.
@pd4501771 I'm in Santa Barbara, Ca. and my Dad's in Jersey City. Are you in Arkansas? I can't tell where you live. I'd love to take him. He had a particular rhythm to double clutching and re-accelerating that caused the engine to sound a particular way when he re-engaged the gas pedal. I can still hear that sound in my head all of these years later. He taught me how to drive buses before I was even old enough to drive :) Cheers, Ron
Attend the "Ghosts of Highway 61 - Dixie Tour 2013" to be held in Blytheville, Arkansas April 4-6, 2013 and a person would stand a very good chance of riding a real live Greyhound Scenicruiser. There will be several to choose from too. Event will be held downtown at the restored former (1937) Greyhound terminal. Open to the public (free) and any antique coach owner, coaches built prior to 1980. Don't miss this - it will be a one-of-a-kind event. Tell your friends !

Absolutely amazing restoration of this AWESOME coach. The 4104's and 4501's were REAL buses, highway travelers, and solid.

SPECTACULAR!
I've never seen an interior restored so this is a nice change from the typical RV setup. It's so nice to see it in it's original state.
+ScottDLR Sure is! :D
Yeah, for relaxation, take the bus...

Absolutely beautiful. Looks fantastic. I would love to go on a road trip in that time machine. Great job!
What a outstanding job showcasing this 4501... hope you can showcase a 4104 like this. Like I said. Outstanding..!!!
WOW!! What a BEAUTIFUL job. It brings tears to my eye's. I used to drive the old buses, sorry to say not the Scenic cruisers. Good job.

I kept waiting for you to show the bathroom.
I am restoring a PB4501 Super Scenicruiser 044 as well, could use the list of where you had labels and switches purchased.
A veritable time capsule! Beautiful work!!!
wow, that's just incredible!!! amazing job
Would love to own this one. Excellent work has been done of this 4501
This is awesome, I would love to see this bus in person. Excellent!!!!!
A very good job of preserving History.
Thank you.
What a beautiful bus, you have done a fantastic job with it.
Thanks Bill
I remember going through training and having to handle the Keloy Extinguisher. They were HEAVY!!!
Awesome job. Probably even better than when it was new.
Thanks Terry. I look forward to meeting you in Blytheville. Take care.

GH has a restored Scenic. PD4501-001. Stored in L.A. used on rare occasions for movie shoots.
Thanks Bob. Glad you like the T-shirt. Take care.
Tom
Wow, nice resto.
Thanks for the comments. No she was "Wheat Harvest Shadow Tan" inside in 1956. The 1962 Green paint does not smell the same as the tan !
Santo
Thanks for the compliments. I appreciate that. Take care.
Tom
Park brake is air operated. Switch is to left of driver on console.

Nice video, I rode one of these when I was a boy and I sat on the upper level but the upper front windows were tinted dark so I couldn't see out.

Five stars. Man, she's beautiful. So, I'm wondering, Tom...With all those new vinyl seats and fresh paint inside, do you think she smells like the day she rolled off the assembly line in Pontiac Michigan?

Wow, what a difference!

@courtwahl161 Yes, restroom is all intact, but we never mess with it since the bus is so rarely used for groups of much size. Thanks.

What a beauty!! Is it on the road theses days?
Whoops, got the numbers bass-ackwards. It's PD4501. Sorry.
@pd4501771 "Pre-1980" would include MCI models MC7 and MC8. But what about early 80s MC9s?
may you please tell me the interior ceiling heights in the upper and lower areas? im just loving these buses, curious if a 6'2" guy could stand up throughout. thx
@bmacz28 Thanks so much. Take care.

The skylights were standard on the Scenicruiser. (one in lower level, and three on the upper level.) Thanks for watching.

When you go from back to front, there is a module on the left with a door. I think that was the lavatory?
The "pastel-era" :-D That's soooo coooool! :-)
Good
Hi
Best way is to check often at my website (address is posted in the video description section of this video) Take care. Tom
really Nice Tom! just clean that Bat Shit off the skylite, and get that chrome blade drivers fan on there.You did a really cool job!
J.DeGraef
Beautiful! I'm jealous! A quick question, -- do you have the paint code for that interior green?
That is looking nice!
Noticing the comments on the A/C, I was wondering how the A/C is setup in the PD4501, and is it powered by the drive engine; or was there a separate engine for that?..

didn't greyhound have a fleet of these buses back in the day?
1000 of them
@F4crewchief Thanks

There it is 1.5 million Dollars, starting bid! Your bus cost $50,000.00 Dollars new, this was the equivalency to $575, 000.00. No doubt the Hesperus is a Rat-Rod. Nice bus!!! August
@pd4501771 Would you be able to obtain the parts necessary to get the A/C operational again and if so, I bet they would cost a small mint. And what about the insurance requirements? How much have they changed between the time of the Scenicruiser to today where MCI E-and J-Coaches are prevalent?

@Chesterbarnes1 Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it. Take care.
Thanks.
You may be able to return this bus to revenue service ;)
@richardsantink Thank you very much.
Tom
Best seat in the house ! Thanks for watching.
@jlafnear352 Yes, all 1001 were built there.
@BassmanII correct.
@Chesterbarnes1 Thanks.
Tom
@MrCzechers Thanks.
So the restroom is on the lower level.....
Thanks much.
Tom
Thanks Amen.
Did these busses have basement air?
yes, compressor & condenser was on right side of engine, and evaporator, etc. had it's own lower compartment.
@mrspivvy Thanks.
Tom
Sorry 1980 is the cut-off.
porque não ligou o motor?
@Chesterbarnes1 Drive it to Tidewater Va., and we will take a spin in it and I'll buy lunch
