@@TheRichardstewart it WAS slave food. Its recorded that the main dish of slaves in the caribbean and America was cornmeal . It being a main starch in SA reinforces the argument that it was our ancestors who brought it here. Now, since i wasnt there, im relying on history books 😊😊 i will one day visit SA and eat heartily of their tun cornmeal.

I’m from Barbados and we cook it with okras and we eat it with a stew. It’s called cou cou, it’s way different ; u make it mellow like grits.

I am Jamaican and make mine with okra too, and I love to eat it's with brown stewed red snapper. I like it plain by itself too, with coconut milk and Scott bonnet pepper and thyme. My MIL is Hatian and she cooks hers really dry and stiff, and the consistency is different, is a rougher bigger grain of cornmeal. IWhile I like the finely ground cornmeal smooth and rich. I could like both depending on my mood.never put peasin mine, I think I will try it with the pigeon peas, those are my favorite. I Have grown to hate red kidney beans am so 😅tired of eating it, My mother is from Kingston mother made rice and peas every Sunday and Monday of my youth. My MIL makes every single day's long as I’ve been married almost 17 years, and known her even longer. I love how everyone makes their own personal way. IYes, I just bought more pigeon peas, I’m gonna make it tonight.

When i was in Jamaica! I turned into a maroon! No lie! got lost in the Jungle and washed up on the banks of the river! I was so gone so to speak! I just felt free and well, perhaps the jungle provided me with the get away i needed to get my mind right! Sometimes i think back and i wonder? What in the hell was wrong with me? At any rate: we live and we learn

Man wasnt made to live like how we live now so when the mind reconnected with nature it went into primal instincts mode n you just went in to a natural trance man people who are disconnected from it so long can get lost in it no cap i feel its a spiritual thing mostly connecting with God and all that ima do some more research on it cuz it has happened to alot of people

They cook at their own places. I stayed with Mokko for a week. It was amazing. He takes care of himself and the tourists.

My mum makes turn cornmeal with salt fish and cabbage. Love you Mokko, Matthew and Family ❤️
We call that 'Fungii' in Antigua but we make it with okra.Boil the okra 1st then take some of the water out to help turn the cornmeal with a flat broad wooden stick to make it smooth.
Do you have a picture of it? Would the okra break apart?
I dont have a picture but it does dissolve to a point making it slimey and smooth

In Trinidad 🇹🇹we call it cou cou. Everyone makes it differently, but I fry onion, garlic, parsley, celery, then I add coconut milk, my cornmeal mix & leave to steam/ cook. I eat this with dasheen bush calloo & peas. You can add fry, stew fish, or meat.
