  • Help Save The Endangered Monarch Butterfly | #milkweedformonarchs2024 It's the start of the third year of the Milkweed For Monarchs Project! We've worked hard to build up native plantings and gardens across the country to help save the endangered Monarch butterfly! This will be the summer where the plantings continue to grow and the Monarchs really benefit! We're looking to grow the program too! Please share this video or details about the project on all your social media pages. Use the hashtag #milkweedformonarchs2024
If you're in the Upper Midwest, a great source of seeds is from Prairie Moon Nursery (www.prairiemoon.com).
To find the Project on Facebook, check out "Milkweed For Monarchs Project."

I have been amazed by the monarch butterfly since I was a kid. Very nice color scheme they have!

I have been amazed as well. I used to collect the caterpillars as a kid and raise them. I'd then release all the butterflies. Really cool. It's such a great part of summer to see the Monarchs buzzing around the milkweed in the garden. Can't wait for this summer. Thanks for watching and commenting!!

I hope you can find a small area in your yard to put a couple Milkweed plants or some Butterfly Weed. We need all the spots across the country that we can find! Cheers Juani!

I love the emphasis on natives. Way before I started intentionally growing food I started restoring the native community of plants along our pond and yard. I’m learning just how many of our natives are edible.

I had a 20 foot buffer along 200 feet of pond back at an old house. It was beautiful, from native iris and water plants to prairie plants, further from the pond. So much wildlife in that buffer! I'm glad you're doing this too! Cheers!!

Ray from south central Pennsylvania…we purchased a rundown 53-acre farm 25-years ago and have been planting trees and flowers to attract wildlife starting on day one. We built a half acre pond fed by active springs and stocked it with bass and bluegills. Over the years I’ve stabilized over 500’ of wild trout stream on our property by adding habitat to attract birds and butterflies. For the past 2-years I’ve been concentrating on starting patches of milkweed on the hillside behind our house and near the stream. and hopefully this year we will see the growth of new milkweed we’ve planted…keep the Monarchs flying!

Great job keeping this going for the Monarchs! Hope a lot of people join in with you guys. Always fun to see what people grow and glad you’re using natives.

I need to go with natives. It gets so cold, there is really no wiggle room for plants for other zones. Besides, these are so beautiful! Thanks for watching Lisa!

Good morning Rich. The plans sound fantastic and saving the monarchs is great. Our hugel garden has been taken over by milkweed and raspberries.the butterflies are incredible. Great selection of flowers and grasses you have growing on! Looking forward to the thaw here in Ontario. I'm in #milkweedformonarchs2024

I can't believe how warm we've been. Last year we still had feet of snow. We're a month ahead of last year. Check out the Facebook page and please share pictures of the Milkweed and butterflies. Do a video for the project and get more of your viewers to plant as well. Have a great weekend!

We have one milk weed plant that has started. Our area actually has a lot of Monarch butterflies that travel through. I see them on a lot of our flowers around the yard and garden.
    Great video Rich.

With all your land, I bet you see a LOT of the butterflies moving through. There are probably little patches of native plantings that draw them in. Thanks for adding all sorts of flowers and other items that the butterflies love! Cheers Annette!

I live in Minneapolis, in a rental, so my allowed planting space is limited. That being said, I have a section of Milkweed that has been coming back on it's own now for 3 years. Also, less for monarchs, we have a tone of "volunteer" sunflowers that have made their way don the block over the past few years. My goal is to have the whole space between road and sidewalk be all native plants.

@@TheOldSwedesFarmI will for sure. I'm hopeful for the road side space but it's tough to get anything but sunflowers to grow there due to salt and other nasties from the road.

I remember having thousands of monarchs pass through my elementary school as a kid one year. I’ll look into what type of milkweed is native to my area.
A native gardem is a great idea

I absolutely will. Great video! My family and I have remarked over the past few years that even with a substantially sized vegetable and medicinal flower garden, we just haven't been seeing many bees or butterflies visit our property (outside of Chicago) at all. Definitely concerning. CHEMTRAILS???

    • @TheOldSwedesFarm
      @TheOldSwedesFarm  5 месяцев назад +2

Not sure what it is. We have seen a lot of bugs and bees in our area but didn't see Monarchs until last summer when the Butterfly Weed bloomed. Then they were all over. Maybe you don't have the right flowers to attract butterflies, or maybe it's just been bad luck. Keep watching this summer. If you can throw in some Milkweed, let us know. Cheers!
