Toronto Homeless Woman Trying to Kick Her Heroin Addiction

  • It's freezing cold in Toronto, Canada. It's hard to imagine homeless people sleeping out outside in this weather, but the numbers of homelessness continue to increase. I was walking around handing out socks and hand warmers. As I was talking to an indigenous homeless man who goes but the street name of "Bushman" and a young girl who probably wasn't even 18 yet, a homeless woman goes by wearing two backpacks while bushing a cart with suitcase precariously balanced on the top.
When I asked the homeless woman if she'd like some socks and hand warmers, her cart came tumbling down. By now I learned her name. Karla told me she has been sleeping outside homeless in Toronto for four years. Karla and I worked together to get her cart back in order and somewhat balanced. She told me she had asked someone to watch her stuff and this person did something that rearranged the order causing the cart to be unbalanced. My heart broke just thinking about how Karla lugs all this stuff around everywhere she goes. Some people say homeless people are lazy when it's the exact opposite. Surviving homelessness is hard work, and there are no days off - ever!
After being arrested, Karla was sent to a halfway house. When that didn't work out, Karla tried to go into an addiction treatment program, but because she was using suboxone at the time, they would not accept her. That's how Karla first ending up on the streets of Toronto.
It's nearly impossible to stay sober when living on the streets. Karla got addicted to heroin and fentanyl. She's tried methadone treatment, but when the clinic was closed on a holiday, Karla got dope sick.
It's hard to describe dope sickness or opioid withdrawal to anyone who has not experienced it. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and/or constipation, hot and cold flashes, muscle aches and spasms, and even the sensation of bugs crawling on or under the skin all lead to one of the worst experiences imaginable. Dope sickness or even the fear of dope sickness leads to creating the cycle of addiction. A person may first start using opioids to escape emotional trauma once the addiction sets in the addict now need drugs more than they need air.
Karla is determined to wean herself of off drugs. I have huge respect for Karla for having the courage to be candid about her addition and for working hard to get sober. She reminds of another homeless heroin addict I met named Cameron. Cameron received help and is now married with children. He is proof that people can get sober even from the hardest drugs if we are there to help them. Watch his original interview here • Homeless Man Shares RE...
For everyone who is going to judge Karla for being a drug addict remember that as a taxpayer we pay huge money per homeless person per year that's out on the streets. Blame them all you want - you still pay for their homelessness. The smart move is to house homeless people because housing doesn't just save money, it saves lives. I always say that. EVERYONE has an addiction/vice. We all look for comfort somewhere. Some eat themselves into obesity, "cuddle" themselves into an STD, drive into a family of 5,etc..then sit back & laugh at a drug addict. If everyone would look at themselves first this world would be a more understanding place.

last year we had homeless people who were found dead out in the cold from exposure. In that area during winter especially, you will see multiple people out on the grates, in the indoor banking machine rooms, in the McDonald's and Tim Hortons anywhere to keep warm. I wish the security would let them stay and just allow them to stay warm at least through the night.

@Chadwicked B you do understand what a refugee is ? Also homelessness in Toronto has always been a problem, don't use refugees for a source of blame. I do agree the government should do more to help Canadians as much as new comers but we are more than capable of doing both. Unless you are Native you have no greater claim to Canada than a refugee.🤷🏽‍♀️

My advice, go to AA meetings, say your name and that you're an alcoholic and addict. Stay away from NA meetings. Go every day. Let people get to know you. After you're clean and get your 1 year medalian then tell your family you are almost there. No matter what damage or wreckage you left there your family will hopefully take you back. Good luck. You helped me decide what to do with my son. Thank you, Karla.

Basic studio jr 1bdroomn apartments dt start at 2000.00 unless one can get into a co-op (7-10yr waiting list). Condos 500 sq ft start at 500,000 if one wants to deal with a 400,000 mortgage. Right now I am houseless not homeless because I do stay in my vehicle. At 66 yrs it happened. Not on drugs. Yes I do receive Social Security & that is where my situation started. 1st the IRS claimed I owed back tax's 14 yrs ago & started deducting from Social Security which was resolved months later but that had already put me houseless. Now 6 months later Social Security notified me I was over paid on my 1st ck 2017 & will adjust by deducting from my Jan ck $693 from $$1,100. I will survive. Nice people try to encourage me. One man gave me a coat. Alot of seniors on Social Security are houseless because that is all we have. Another surprise was that they do take out for Medicare. Medicare is not free! Additional supplemental insurance at a cost because Medicare does not cover everything. Not excuses but it just is not a simple answer why we are houseless. Please be kind. We already hurt.

GREY DEATH I was typing to the OP and saw your comment. I agree 100%. There is a point you get sick of it. Celeste Brusciano would love to hear your update. Hope you stopped the methadone? I had a suboxone taper off twice. I was clean for two years then had a toxic relationship where I had to move out immediately with just my clothing. Suboxone is much easier to taper off. I was taking it daily and it still helps my pain from RLS and migraines. However, waking up and needing to always take it is not worth it. Having to explain to my significant other. Being free is the best feeling in the world! I have herd the same that the brain can heal but slowly and might need help. Tapered off suboxone and got the Vivitrol shot. This was a life changer. No more waking up sweating or anxiety or having to take a sub. After 3 months of shots which last a month I didn't need it anymore. I feel great and don't even have a thought of taking pain killers.

If she was on suboxone then why did she need another type of a treatment facility? She was already on a treatment plan with suboxone. Suboxone is by far the best method because it blocks the user from getting high if they decided to use again. It also enables the person to slowly reduce how much they take each day and is easier to get off once you have fixed the underlying health issues.
I will say heroin is the hardest drug to quit just behind nicotine. I hope she figures out her way to quit and what works for her.

She said the conditions after her arrest were to be at a treatment facility. Probably an inpatient facility so she would be off the streets. Well, they don't accept suboxone or methadone patients there. So she was stuck. Either they wouldn't allow her to maintain on Suboxone and also be at the facility, or they don't do detox from Suboxone unless they are tapered down very low first. So she lost the spot .

Alot of sober living homes don't allow you to be living there while on suboxone or methadone because other addicts may relapse or find it hard to love around someone who uses those medications, if they got clean without them. Too bad hospitals don't open up waiting rooms to homeless at night. It would give homeless a place to warm up and rest. They could even open up an outreach program to function out of the waiting rooms for night time to help get services for those in need.

Give the viewers a crowd funding site to donate so these homeless can have a change of life. Even if they don't get a house: a tent, a backpacking stove, a smartphone, a backpack, a sleeping bag, cooking ware, peltier phone charger can all help a lot.

I was homeless in the twin cities in the winter. Ugh that was terrible so I can relate. The Mpls shelter was filled with sketchiness. St Paul shelter is usually always full. So riding the light rail back and forth from dtown to Mall of America throughout the night was my way of keeping warm. Evil truly does come out at night as I've seen people act out of the ordinary. I have sympathy for you as it is no walk in the park with homelessness and addiction. God bless you all. I pray none of you guys ever experience homelessness and if you have or had, may you either get out of situation, or never have to go through that again. It definitely changes a person. Sometimes for the better. Sometimes for the worse depending on if anything traumatizing has happened to you on the streets.

@Rico Williams No, I haven't been there since 2014 after I moved back home. I miss the cities very much though. I've lived comfortably sheltered and homeless, so I've seen both worlds that it has to offer.

Homelessness in Toronto sucks. I used to be a security guard and people would sleep in the stairwells. I hated my job and was admittedly a shitty security guard and I would just pretend I didn't see people sleeping there. There's a monument not far from where this video was shot that lists all the homeless people who have died on the cold streets of Toronto. I always found that "i'm just doing my job" excuse pathetic. How could you throw out an old man into the winter night cold when all he wants is a warm place to not die?

I was homeless for a couple weeks, after ditching a halfway house, and heroin helped keep me motivated to stay alive. Now being clean and sober for years, it hurts my heart to even think about these people. I have 2 kids, a husband, and an apartment, but I was one of the lucky people who had the opportunity to find my way. I don't think a lot of people realize addicts are generally suffering from something else before the drugs, commonly mental illness. The saddest people I've met are addicts. I remember a counselor at a psych ward I was in told me he could almost assume I had been abused as a child because I had a history of an eating disorder and drug abuse. I don't know how you stay clean living on the streets. I hope there's rehabs and halfway houses around her, and she gains the will to recover. Much love for these people.

I can't even imagine what it's like. I've been on the street before for a few months and managed to stay off drugs, crack specifically. It's not easy at all, easier to stay off it if your not in a shelter (at least some of them). Around here crack and opioid abuse is a huge problem too. Good for her though. There are so many I know who have lost there children for drugs or whatever reason. I am not in Toronto, but all the best to you!!

Tell her to stay far away from fentanyl. I know of several people who have died from fentanyl.
I have a friend in N.C. who told me that her boyfriend. Had brought a bag of heroin to her house. She said, "That he told her to cut out two lines." When she snorted hers. She said, " there was nothing different about it." But when he did his that he collapsed and died. She called 911. They could not revive him. The autopsy showed fentanyl. So the heroin was cut with it. That's another life taken by fentanyl.
The same friends two year old girl had drowned three years previously. The mother was at an appointment. The babysitter had went inside to the bathroom and the little girl fell in the swimming pool. By the time the sitter found her. She could not be revived. So my friend was beside herself with grief. So much so that. She just lost it.
My friend had to be put into a mental hospital for a while. She just couldn't cope with both these deaths. She still has severe bouts of depression, but is on medication.
I hope and pray that this girl will get into some type of housing. She is trying. I feel like she can kick drugs again. My heart goes out to her. I pray she will be successful and possibly become a counselor.
Mark you are a ray of light for these people. Thank you for loving and caring so much. I wish you Love, Peace and Joy.

It's a positive sign that she is actively in a detoxification program. However, I hope that, additionally, the issues which resulted in her using drugs to begin with are addressed. I don't think she stated what those issues were, but it would be sad if, once finished with the detoxification program, she were to relapse again due to other non-resolved issues. I hope the detoxification program is not just 'chemical' in nature, but also has a psychological component.

I agree, getting to the "root" of the problem is key. Otherwise we're just treating the symptoms, which is usually a set-up for relapse! If we don't get the weeds at the root, they're just gonna come back...

I feel so much sympathy for drug addicts on the street. I have only been on benzodiazepine withdrawal and it is the most unbearably, painful never ending torture, where you don't go into shock. It took me a while to recover. I made some drastic changes and became religious for the first time during the withdrawal, but being homeless on withdrawal, is something I can't even begin to imagine. I am lucky to have a supportive happy family and somewhere to live, but my hearts will always go out to these people. Their agency is taken away from them. It is not their fault they are in the situation they are in, it is easy to think that, when we haven't been or experienced the environment that has caused this, but I've noticed it's generally very sensitive and intelligent people who end up in these situations and they need to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Even when hell becomes a reality on earth. There is a light.

    • @civagiarn
      @civagiarn 5 лет назад

It is an instinctive human psychological coping mechanism to subconsciously think if someone's suffering that they somehow deserve it. That is there to prevent us from also suffering emotionally, but the reality is if anyone of us were in that situation it would hurt so much, it would not be something we have control over. Agency is taken away. Even if we don't want to fully empathise it is better to be aware and to do our best to help.

You know anyone that wants to say bad things about this woman should sew their mouths shut last I checked who are we to judge anyone and the fact is sadly we are no better I applaude her for being brave enough to come on camera and speak even if people would judge her. No one has any room to talk bad about her in fact she can move into my house...it is a outrage how this world treats those who do not have shame on anyone that passes judgement
