Hey guys, the metal shavings do come from the blown up locking differential it got, you can actually see the cracked cage in the video. This is a pretty common thing that happens when you treat that differential badly.

Great tip for my next Belgian inspection to print out a document proving engine power. I still got a 740 sitting here and as a new owner, still have to undertake the daunting task of taking it to MOT. Also your brake caliper issue COULD be caused by having water in the brake fluid. But it will be more likely be caused by the seals on the piston failing. You'll have one seal to keep out road gunk and brake dust on the outside. On the inside you'll have a squared seal which can also fail and let in moisture. (but I reckon you guys replaced those as well) I'm glad you decided to weld in a new piece of metal. The inspector will take note of the effort made, more than the quality of the job. (in my experience) And finally, congratulations on your green card! Now it's time to take this brick on the road and actually enjoy it!
I bought a 240 in the 2000s to run it on used vegoil and sleep in it on longer trips. This VW LT engine is nothing else than an extended 1.6L VW engine from Gold, Caddy, T3 etc and they are great for vegoil. As you already called this one Greta, she might be happy to go carbon neutral too... Some tips: 2mm longer glow plugs, increase the injector opening pressure by 20bar and advance the injection timing slightly (very slightly!) and give her some new pilot-injection (flat tip nozzle) injectors. DM me and I can point you to a decently priced seller. Great vehicle. Mine was rusted on both sided front to rear underneath unfortunately. All the best for this project, keep it running. It’s a rare vehicle now!

I'm in the U.S. It always amazes me at how terrible the cars I drive are... we don't have inspection besides an emissions test. The truck I drove in high school had a door that would open around corners, and it would always die when coming to a stop if it was cold out. Wild.
Great work and great videos! Im not a diesel guy but i understand there are adjustments that can be made that will reduce the noise and exhaust smoke. It may have been on an episode of Wheeler Dealers where they show how to manage the adjustments. Well done and well played!

First thing to do on a MK3 Golf is change the gearbox oil !!!. Drain oil from 17mm hex plug and fill 2L of 75W-90 GL-4 oil from speedometer cable hole.

There should be a warning sign visible on the steering wheel, the driver's seat, as well as all seat belts, airbags and on the passenger side. Has the car automatic transmission control immobilizer works. Test drive with testing of gears and brakes, high beam / low beam lever works. Beams, Seals, exhaust pipes, brake pipes, warning triangle, the battery is stuck. Engine rebuilds, towbar, ... You name it.
those rear shock absorbers are the original Volvo Nivomat air shocks that were an option on any Volvo 240 model sold Canada, USA , Europe, and mainly for people towing trailers of any kind, I remember selling a new Wagon like yours in 1987 240 GL wagon gas and he added the shocks, a transmission oil cooler , hitch, and overload coil springs in the rear to help the shocks , his caravan was 2 tons in weight and got more aggressive brake pads front and rear, if memory serves me correctly the Nivomat shocks were about $5/600 Canadian in 1987/88 , super high quality products, if your looking for some of these check geparts.se you might have some luck here or check local companies sometimes they can be rebuilt 👍

Great video, Memphis. Wonderful to see Greta passed inspection. She sure is a lovely car. I see you have the sedan tail pipe that makes a 90 degree turn out of the muffler and goes straight out. Estates, at least here in Canada, had a pipe that had an extra S bend so the pipe was beneath the tail lamp. This is safer, particularly if you have a long load do the tailgate will not fully close. The vacuum at the rear of the car will suck exhaust fumes into the car more with that pipe location. That is also true if the seal on the tailgate or back window is not quite what it should be. Fortunately we don't have that same regulation about the location of the pipe, so mine comes out more to the side, for greater safety. It also protects the pipe from damage if I happen to back into a snowbank, which is a regular possibility around here for 6 months of the year.

I have after market air shocks on my 93' Pathfinder...love them. Air shocks are available on Ebay. As low as $100 depending on your car or truck.
