Chet Baker is up there for me. Something about the emotion in his soft and ordinary voice.
Yesssss
I love the fact that your list is YOUR LIST!! Different vocalists speak to each of our hearts for different reasons. All the singers you especially love are/were fantastic singers.
Sam Cooke was Otis Redding's vocal hero and you can hear his influence in Marvin Gaye's voice. They all died tragically young. One of my favorite Chris Cornell songs is "Seasons." "Hunger Strike" as well. His voice could be beautifully brutal, like watching an eagle soaring, gliding then suddenly descending upon its unwitting prey. Ronald lsley has an amazing way of interpreting other's songs and making them his own. Plus the lsleys were smart (and talented!) enough to leave Motown, where they were largely neglected, and start T-Neck records. Successfully keeping with their commitment to the "lt's your thang" mentality. Karen Carpenter. Wouldn't you want her to sing lullabies to your fussy, sleepless baby? Her voice is timeless. She just sung purely and gently without trying to peal paint off the walls. That made the songs she sang, as well as her untimely death, even more poignant. I love the fact that Vince Gill plays well with others. He can sing soaring leads or intertwine his voice in harmony with others. Thanks for mentioning his guitar playing. Country guitar looks deceptively simple in the dexterous hands of a skilled player like Vince.

Eva Cassidy, Eva Cassidy, Eva Cassidy, Eva Cassidy, Aimee Nolte
This this this this
I concur. Eva had a short life too, and (as far as I can tell) isn't very well known anymore. But the recordings she made were fantastic.
She is my favorite singer.
great video as always, great collection! thanks aimee
That's a gooood list! One of my favorite singers was David Clayton Thomas of Blood Sweat and Tears (also one of my favorite groups)
I love Your Channel. I learned a lot (almost everything) about piano playing, watching Your Videos. And I greatly appreciate.
Big up on the Ronald Isley, Aimee! ... I'm going with their version of "Summer Breeze" as my fave Isley Bros track.
I love some of these songs! As a kid I didn't think about the artists; the music was sort of its own world. As a result, I recognize many of the songs on your list, but none of the names! Thanks for bringing some love to the people behind the music.
Ronald Isley never crossed my mind, and I'm ashamed! He's going on my list now. I can't thank you enough!
It's a great day, when someone sends you in a new musical direction! I grew up hearing some of these great singers in the background ,with no name to put the voice..
Thank you!
Aimee, I love that your choices are from a wide variety of genres. We are each a "product" (to some extent) of our collective musical experiences, and your list cuts a wide path. I would LOVE to see you do another list of your favorite 5 jazz voices.
Thanks! Yes, on another day!
Great choices! Great video! Makes me want to listen to them all : )
Some great favourites and, for me, some new stuff. Looking forward to ...
That's a wonderful list! You have great taste in music!
Aimee! Love your list - I'm with you on these singers. Drifting on a Memory is one of my all-time faves, as is Sam Cooke. Thanks for the Vince Gill. I now really appreciate him. Nice list.
Nice list! Other strong contenders for me would be Nat King Cole, Sting, Eva Cassidy, and Whitney Houston. I remember in getting my music degree, I had to listen to a lot of classical music. I'd like to apply the same type of rigor in listening to other genres of music, especially vocalists! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for these inputs- Ronald Isley is great!!!! I have so many as well, also french and italian ones like Marie Pelletier, Daniel Balavoine, Maurane, Francoise Hardy,Tina Arena etc, but this is, because I sing loads of french repertoire.
What great artists! Thanks for helping us remember the history of these greats and revisit their work. You sure have a great ear. I really loved Karen Carpenter's voice and I could not believe I did not know it was Sam Cooke on some of those songs you mentioned. I am definitely gonna look up the works from those artists. Thanks Aimee
Music creation stopped somewhere in the mid 1970s. Thank you for highlighting this fact.
Spot on Aimee! My girlfriend knows there's a problem with Sam and me tho cuz whenever I listen to him tears come rolling down b4 long.. :) Thank you, I love your channel!
Glad that one of my personal favorites got a mention!
In addition to utterly inhabiting the emotional world of every lyric she sings, Linda Ronstadt sure knows a great song! From her earliest days, she seems to have consciously cultivated her relationships with brilliant songwriters - such as JD Souther, Glenn Frey, Warren Zevon, Eric Kaz, Anna McGarrigle, and the inexorable Lowell George.
I loved this! I am going on the hunt for the Netflix on Sam Cooke & I am in COMPLETE agreement w. you on the beauty of his voice, as well as the utterly unique and never-to-be-imitated tone of Karen Carpenter: you hear her voice, and there is no voice that sounds like her's, before or since. I just really appreciate the extra information you have shared, in re: Isley and Cornell and Gill, whose voices I am not as familiar with -- this just makes me want to go looking deeper. Isn't this world of voices so rich???? THANK YOU AIMEE!
Great top 5 Video, thanks for sharing! Love Sam Cooke! Remind me to tell you my story about Vince Gill, I was blessed enough to meet him and his gang, and was invited to attend his concert in San Diego.. my girlfriend gave me a surprise divorced party...in deed Vince Gill has a truly beautiful voice, I always get goosebumps when I hear his music.
I admire your efforts here, Aimee, even for the attempt to whittle it down to 5. I think I could spend a month on this and still have a hard time getting below 50, maybe, if I'm willing to endure psychic pain by leaving too many off. So much depends upon context, too, as well as genre and song choice (as if you as a music expert and teacher don't know that).
Sometimes my favorites aren't so much for the technical abilities or strength of pipes. For example, Jerry Garcia's voice during his best live performances in some of his melancholy ballads could move me emotionally as well as any opera singer or Broadway star.
So many more. Thanks, Aimee!
I love this. Thank you. I am a long time subscriber, but this is probably my first comment. I love your stuff, but am such a beginner that I never comment. Thank you so much.
Great top 5, and I was fanning out when you mentioned Karen. I’m shocked Whitney Houston was not included because you’ve mentioned her in your other videos. Perhaps a Top 10 video next time?
You had me at Vince Gill!!! And, you neglected to mention that he's become a member of The Eagles over the past couple of years. I'm very "in tune" with your list...love them all, especially Karen Carpenter. But, your #6 is my #1, and no one else is even close. I've been hooked on Linda Ronstadt's voice for 50+ years!! Thanks for sharing. I loved your commentary!!
I love your list and find a place in my heart for all. Mine would be different and certainly include Dianne Reeves, Al Jarreau, Jack Bruce and my list has to be bigger.
Chris Cornell had such a unique timbre to his voice too. It was one of those voices that could give you goosebumps at times.
Always learning from you! Never knew Karen Carpenter was a drummer, let alone a Buddy Rich fan!
Thanks for bringing Sam Cooke to the forefront of my memory. As a young Texas teen, I loved singing along to his music and pretending that my latest crush loved me and was listening to me sing his passionate songs. I was probably partial to the 'candy coated' songs, but I think that I loved all of his work. He helped me through that time when I was too bashful to talk to the fairer sex. Thanks again.
Kind of a surprising and insightful list from a jazz artist. Linda Ronstadt would be close to first on my list but I got to hear her live in the 70s. I bet they didn't know you liked Soundgarden when they let you in the "Y".
Great list. Now revisiting Isleys and Sam Cooke as always liked them but they've taken a back seat for a bit hete. Also loading up on Nat King Cole, who I'm pretending I heard you put in there anyway as I'm sure you just forgot, it's ok. ;)
Tommy Boy clip was gold!
When are you playing in Argentina to play?, let me know! just love your channel and your music!
Aimee can I get your opinion on the Stoic Theme from Shawshank Redemption? I saw you put the movie cover in the beginning of the video. I've always been obsessed with that movie and that song in particular. so simple but yet so moving
Hi Aimee, love your channel and agree with your list mostly. I think when people like a certain voice, it’s usually associated with a song they like by that singer. Was surprised when Elvis Presley’s voice was omitted. Take a quick listen to 1973 Hawaii concert, an it’s probably the best representation of his vocal ability. But still liked your list though. Thanks
When I saw the title of this, the first name that came to my mind was Karen Carpenter so I’m so pleased she made your list too. A great loss to the music world.
My list would definitely have to have Sade and Dizzy Gillespie...after those 2 voices, it gets harder for me to choose only 3
Oh yes those are great voices, especially Karen Carpenter who would be in my top 5 together with James Taylor Eva Cassidy, Luther Vandross and Dianne Reeves
What about your top 5 guitar players? It would be interesting to hear a list like that from someone who isn't a guitar player
My older sister bought the 45 record of Shout. I heard it and said, "Wow, who is THAT!?" "A little bit softer now, a little bit louder now. At the end of side one, before flipping it over..."Now waaaait a minute"? Aimee, you gots some sista in ya'll. :)
Wasn't going to comment but then you dropped Sam Cook! A dear friend who died of MS, made his competition career singing Sam Cook, and neither of them will never be forgotten. (bless you Nathan Fenton 1972-2016, you'll always have a brother in me)
Beautiful Aimee. Sam Cooke definitely. The carpenters have one of the best lead guitar solos I think in the song 'Goodbye to love'.
For a moment there i thought you wasn't going to say "Superstar" for karen carpenter. phew! just in time. too many amazing singers over the years to even think or making a top 5.
I Saw Soundgarden live in 1994 and they sung Waiting for the sun (the Doors) just beofre blackhole sun at sunset (it was in a field at the reading festival. amazing.
i was seriously expecting you to say Eva Cassidy in this list.
The way you're talking has such an asmr quality to it.
So difficult to pick 5! If we consider only the voice timbre, i d say: Nina Simone, Miriam makeba, Elvis, johnny cash, Art Garfunkel?
wow I did not expect you to say Chris Cornell! makes sense though, greatness recognizes greatness
Eva Cassidy is the absolute best!
Didn’t know vince Gill was in pure prairie league, cool.
Hi Aimee. I must have carried Karen Carpenter's voice around in my head for the best part of 45 years now. I remember buying 'Goodbye To Love' as a teenager. It's just one of those voices that fills a little of the void - if you know what I mean.
I have another list of my favorite jazz singers. I am only taking into account voice timbre in this video.
Aimee Nolte Music. Ok - thanks for clarifying - I guess I missed that in the title.
If warm honey had a sound it would be Karen Carpenter singing "I can dream, can't I"
When I saw the title of this post, that voice and that song were my first reaction. Welcome to the club!
Karen’s voice was one of a kind.
Oh dang, you're right, Sam Cooke is the greatest.
Great list! Agree with all of them. My favorite is Lulu. How do you feel about her?
C'mon Aimee! YOUR voice is The best ! ❤️
I'll shine a light on some of the best voices I've ever heard but many people don't know about:
5 New: Sara Bareilles, India.Arie, Beth Hart, Madison Cunningham, Estrella Morente
5 Old: La Paquera de Jerez, Jackie Verdell, Dorothy Love Coates, Lorez Alexandria, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
I know about both Madison Cunningham and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan through Jeff Buckley
“Last remaining light” and “moth” by audioslave! Cornell’s power on full display
Hi Aimee, This is Yoji from Japan. Please keep in touch. 😊
Exept the cantry lovely singer, i love your list. Almost like mine... I had almost all the carpenters and "soom" sam cook records.
Please listen to Roy Orbison!
He is the REAL master of “singing so high so pure”
I do love him so much ❤️
Everyone of these performers rates at the top somewhere. Here’s a favorite of mine since I was born in 1950 and have a love for many singer’s from the 40s abd 50s - Nat King Cole.
That's a tuff task for sure. Ortega and I always do top 5 everything.
Two killings of Sam Cooke was such a great documentary.♥️ I would recommend that to anyone. How about Smokey Robinson in that documentary, Sam and him where like the coolest guys ever in that.
I was hoping you mentioned Sam Cook!
What a hard task.
Anyway, my all time favorite voice is Tom Waits, can’t live without him.
My all time favorite musician, no close second.
Nancy Wilson (the jazz singer, not the rock)
Stevie Wonder
Billie Holiday
Linda Ronstadt
Ray Charles
Everybody forgets Harry Nilsson, he had it all...no argument with your list Ms.Nolte, they're all great.
Oh he’s a good one
Interesting! I would assume the style of music which your favorites sing might have some (maybe unconscious) bearing on your enjoyment of them. Yes?
My top two favorite Vinces of all time are Vince Gill and Vince Gilligan!
Both geniuses!
Sam Cooke is a good choice in my opinion, he has a great voice. Honestly I wouldn't thought about him but I know much more of his music than what I was aware of. People whom I missed in the top-5: Aretha Franklin and Freddie Mercury. Listen for example to The Great Pretender and Barcelona, that man had a great voice.
Karen Carpenter's voice devastates me every time...
And then you put them all together and you get - Jeff Buckley.
What a loss. Jeff Buckley was like a one-man choir...
#5 Muddy Waters
#4 Koko Taylor
#3 Etta James
#2 Bobby Bland
#1 Howlin' Wolf
*List and order subject to change based on my mood, with the exception of The Wolf. He is always #1!
Great list of blues singers
"The highways of my life", "Harvest for the world" and "Work to do" are also great songs from the Isley Brothers
Great voices (what comes to my mind first): Karen Carpenter, Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, David Pack, David Gates, Steve Walsh, Stevie Wonder, Gino Vannelli, Eric Stewart, Ian Anderson
I would have to say that Chet Baker is one of my favorite singers. Diana Krall, and, from reading comments reminded me of Eva Cassidy. How about Billie Holliday? Her voice was unique which is what I love about it. Also Harry Connick Jr. rounds out my top 5.
First top 5:
Jonathan Davis
Sam Cook
Liam Ghallager
Alison Kraus
George Jones
Second top five:
Dean Martin
Donovan
Elton John
Chino Moreno
Conway Twitty
In no particular order.
Sam Cooke was the the first name that popped into my head when I saw the title. The second was Kurt Elling, so different and yet both have such emotional power. Fortunately for you, you wouldn't remember when the Carpenters were so overplayed that they eventually became a joke. But Karen had a beautiful voice, though it's still difficult to appreciate some of the songs.
I didn't put nearly enough thought into my list but here are the first 5 that popped into my head.
Fiona Apple - ruclips.net/video/gBiR2SR8Okc/видео.html
Jeff Buckley - ruclips.net/video/fdXQucDOed8/видео.html
Alison Krauss - ruclips.net/video/zSif77IVQdY/видео.html
Bill Withers - ruclips.net/video/g3hBYTkI-sE/видео.html
Julie London - ruclips.net/video/MkD_kYkRk3c/видео.html
Elvis, Steve Perry, Aretha, Jimi Jamison, Karen Carpenter
I can't imagine how many voices will be recommended to you in these comments, so I'd better get in early. Another that we lost too soon, less well known than most, is the late Jimmie Spheeris.
I have a top five singers list too. The only problem is that there are about 50 singers on it, a number of whom few people will know. And I could never rank them. How can I compare Ella to Elvis? Al Green to Patsy Cline? Aretha to Eva Cassidy? Luciano Pavrotti to Katie Noonan?
I love them all. I refuse to choose between them.
What are your top 5 singers who sing Skat?
#5 Ronald Isley . . . Absolutely! . . . I'm surprised someone your age would know this guy :o)
#4 Chris Cornell? . . . I guess I'm just to old - his voice alone is good but not great to my ear.
#3 Vince Gill . . . Very Good but not a favorite of mine. I wonder what success he would have had if he never did country
#2 Karen Carpenter . . . One of my absolute favorites - SUPERSTAR is my favorite, it's been stuck in my head for weeks.
#1 Sam Cook . . . I can see that I but I guess being a guy I would pick a number of female voices like Toni Braxton, Annie Lennox, Anita Baker, Patsy Cline etc (all contraltos)
Love everyone one your list thanks for reminding me about them. But my “Sam Cooke” would be Richard Bona. I stumbled upon a concert video by Bona on tv and went straight to the Record store after the last note to buy everything by that genius of a musician. Well, to be exact I ordered everything by Bona and had to wait a few weeks to listen again, and I have never stopped.
Richard Bona the bass player?
StoryeTime: Yes and vocalist 😀
@@jakobjuul5676 He is indeed a good vocalist but thought I'd check if he was the one who were referring to ;)
Many more than 5 deserve to be in the top 5! Aretha, Marvin Gaye, Frank, Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Art Garfunkel, etc. You just can't have a top 5 with less than a dozen.
HA - yeah I’ve probably got 20 or 25 in my top five...In my head I have a “my favorites” category but I stopped trying to put a number on it a while ago. (Is that cheating? LOL)
Very funny comment. And I have to agree.
Chris Cornell - Seasons ❤️
Archie Brownlee, Carl Hall, Johnny Hartman, Chaka Khan & Minnie Riperton!
No place for Blue Eyes in your list? Frank is #1. The greatest ever ♥️
My list would change often but almost certainly would always include Aretha and Ray.
Not what I was expecting in some ways then other way I kind of get it. I'm a big Sam Cooke fan. The song Superstar I like it by the cowriter of the song Bonnie Bramlett she's one of my all time favorite singers along with Billie Holiday. I would have Marvin Gaye his phrasing is great, but I guess being a studio drummer before being a singer helped that. Just to have five I'll say Aretha and Wilson Pickett.
Marvin Gaye is in the top 10 for sure. :-)
It’s hard to pick five. Linda Ronstadt, Grace Slick, Sam Cooke, and Freddie Mercury are some of my favorites.
Pop & Popular: Karen Carpenter, Sam Cooke, Matt Munro, inumerable soul artists.
Jazz: Johnny Hartman, Mel Torme, Johnny Hartman, Johnny Hartman.
Sam Cooke..........love him to pieces.
Where does Elves sit on your list!
Connie Boswell
Diana Krall - everything
Judy Garland doing "stompin at the Savoy" at age 14
#1 - Patsy Cline or Sarah Vaughn (tied)
It's awesome to see Chris Cornell here. One of the greatest ever!!
Karen Carpenter is my favorite. Olivia Newton-John, Barbra Streisand, Ann Wilson of Heart, Johnny Mathis. I love Vince Gill’s voice too. To start with….
My fav female singers are Laura Nyro, Nina Simone and Shirley Horn. (I remember Rod Stewart saying his favorite singer was Sam Cooke. That one is kind of obvious)
MY SECOND FIVE: Keely Smith, Rod Stewart, Frank Sinatra, June Christy, Ella Fitzgerald
(Harder than I thought, but here goes)
1) Greg Lake ruclips.net/video/wNJFUBbI4b8/видео.html
2) James Taylor ruclips.net/video/JOIo4lEpsPY/видео.html
3) Donny Gerrard ruclips.net/video/LyKXW3ioY1Q/видео.html
4) David Clayton Thomas ruclips.net/video/tJLKket6dLM/видео.html

3) Karen Carpenter (pick any one:)
4) Jennifer Warnes ruclips.net/video/f96WymmAJAs/видео.html
5) Alison Krauss ruclips.net/video/1SCOimBo5tg/видео.html
Stevie Wonder. Elton John. Harry Nilsson. Paul Simon. Cat Stevens
Joni Mitchell. Karen Carpenter. Bonnie Raitt. Mavis Staples. Ellen Mcilwayne
