- In this video, I showcase my latest completed World War II Army for Bolt Action, the Finns!
The figures are all from Warlord Games and, even though being some of their oldest sculpts, were fun to paint. The 2 vehicles in the army, both captured Soviet armor, are from Tamiya and are in 1/48th scale - a perfect fit for 28mm wargaming!
There are timestamps below so feel free to hop around! Do us a favor and give us a like and a sub if you are so inclined.
Keep those brushes moving!

Great job on these Finns, James. This is one of my favorite nations to read about during their two wars against the Soviets. Well done.
Thank you, Eric. I remember seeing the Winter War movie in '97 at Historicon in one of the vendor halls. I've had them on my mind for 25 years! lol. I think if Warlord did a plastic redo of the Finns, they'd have a hit on their hands.
Finns = TCB.... Taking Care of Business.
Look into the Finnish Civil war. Took about 3 months to rid the commie blight. Mad props.
Looking really nice James, beautiful work all round. Now cue the Monty Python... Finland, Finland, Finland....
The country where i quite want to be ....
Thanks, Cal.
Excellent work mate, those Finns look like they are ready to kick some ass. Interesting that you did not go for a stug but they had basically every Soviet vehicle in their service too, so a su spices it up, good decision. I have a scale model weekend coming up with my mates as well, enjoy yours!
Thank you for the compliments. I don't know how much painting is going to get done on my getaway to be honest. I'm pretty certain there will be a lot of empty wine bottle though. lol
Can´t see any flaw :)
Cracking job James, really like what you have done with these figures, they look brilliant. Love Fort Ass hole haha
Cheers, Sean. They were a long project, but it turned out well. Fort Asshole is a highly contested piece of feline real estate between the kitchen and the living room. Daily battles. lol
Very nice! I have been looking at doing a force for the swedish volunteers in Finland 1940 for battlegroup.
Great job on the minis!
Thanks very much. I'd suggest shopping around for figures as painting the same couple of guys over and over gets boring fast.
Good to see Finish figures James and they are nicely painted and based . Regards Gav.
Thanks, Gav. It took me a long while to do. My painting mojo had skipped town and painting the same 9 figures 4 times over made this a lot more protracted than I thought it would. On to the next project!
Beautiful Finns, cracking job on them!
Thanks, Phil. They took a while, but they turned out well.
Impressive work on the Finn's James nice camo on the armour
Thanks you very much, Justin. Glad yo liked the camo on the vehicles.
Excellent painted troops of the Finnish army. A great set and additional the Scout car and the SU-122 as captured vehicles.
This looks all well. Good work, James. Best wishes, Joachim
Thanks, Joachim. The Su122 was a good kit to do. However, the gun mount was brittle and snapped, so there is no elevation possible and I had to glue it into place. Usually the Tamiya kits are exceptional, but I was a little bummed out it happened.
Great work on the Finns James. My mate runs the Finns so I’ve fought against them so many times.
Thanks, Beccas. I hope I can get my Finns in a game some day before judgement day. lol
Beautifully done and a great subject. 👏👏I love the idea of a Finnish camo SU... anything, really! Great idea James. 👍👍
Thanks very much! I was worried about the camo, but it seems like it is a hit with everyone. haha
Very beautiful painted project, i like the second lt and the sniper the most. I like that snow grass actually. Nice workon the helms. Strong force.
Cheers, Lucian. The lt. and sniper were fun to do and I think I enjoyed them the most. Painting the same 9 figures 4 times in a row gets boring fast, so I left the officer and the weapons teams to do between the squads to keep it interesting.
Nicely done James! Infantry looks great, but i especially like the camo scheme on the vehicles. Thanks for sharing, take care and keep up the good work my friend.
Thanks, George. I was worried about the camo, but it's a hit! I'm happy about that.
Wow ! Awesome army ! Love the trees also ! Now i want some Finns
Thanks for the compliments! Glad you like the trees too. :)
Great looking army James! They turned out really well even though they are some older sculpts. Nice to see some Finns. They have some fun rules. Love the Lt in the long coat. He is sweet. Thanks for sharing and take care
Cheers, Dan. I'm working on the 8th Army now...well kind of...I'm hoping to get them out soon.
Great paint job fella 👍🏻
Thank you very much! They were a lot of fun to paint.
Another fantastic Bolt Action army there James, really very impressive! You've absolutely nailed that camouflage scheme too. Top work as always 😀
Cheers! I was so uncertain about the camo on the vehicles, but it seems like it's a hit. Thanks for the compliment!
Fantastic looking army, love the skulls on the helmets and the vehicles look fantastic. Nice one mate 😁👍
Thank you very much. I was worried about the vehicles, but it seems that people are liking them.
Great looking force James. Really nice. 👍
Thanks, Jim. Is that podcast with Nik, yourself and Leon going to be a regular thing?
I think so. It won’t necessarily be the same people every week though. Nik and Leon are organising it and I think they’re looking to keep the lineup varied so there’ll be a few other people who drop in and out. Not sure how the time difference would work for you, but drop them a line if you fancy joining one week.
Very nice list James, great painting on the Finns as well.
Thank you very much. It was my budget list. lol.
Fantastic update! Love seeing other armies besides the big ones. Great work as always.
Thanks very much. I'm working on the 2 big North Africa forces at the moment and hope to get them done by summer. I got Poles on the way...maybe. After that, I might try partisans.
Lovely force James. I always fancied a Finnish army and this is great inspiration
Thanks, Dom. I know you're a bit of a connoisseur of figures and manufacturers, so I'd suggest you look around for some alternative figures too. Painting the same 9 guys over and over for a skirmish game gets a bit tedious.
These turned out really great mate. I struggled using the warlord troops. I found myself stuck to normal troops because there was no way of making the troops different enough to stand out. Mark the troops under the bases so that when you put them in storage you do not forget the squad composition. I also used a bit of winter effect on the bases.
Glad you finished them my Finns are still unfinished.
Thanks, Anthony. I was a little disappointed with the figures too. I guess they didn't live up to the hype of the army which in games is a tough nut to crack. They are pretty old figures from their range and we've been spoiled in the last 5 or so years with really great detailed sculpts. I'm surprised they did plastic Italians before Finns.

I did actually do a video on what I have done on my Finns. Not sure if you have seen it looks it up it’s about 2 years ago. In total It’s probably not even a 1/3rd of the whole army. I think I have 3 or 4 more infantry squads command mmg’s and snipers left to do?
Looks great! Which paints did you use for the base uniforms, love the colors
Thanks for watching and the compliment. The powdery blue/grey is a color called French Grey - a similar color to the uniforms of the French Army in WWI. The helmets and pants are a charcoal grey that was given a mustard yellow color, or honey brown color, to lighten it up for highlights. I use Americana craft paints mostly, so I don't know the equivalents in GW or Army Painter. If I did, I would let you know. I hope this helped. :)
Fantastic figures buddy
Thanks very much. I'm glad you liked them!
Excellent work my friend
Thank you, Leon! I saw that you were on a podcast with Medieval Warrior and I only got to catch the first 2 or 3 minutes before I had to answer to Wifetronic. Is the Podcast going to be a regular thing with you guys?
@@jvcpaints yes mate. Every Friday. Although I’m not on every week. You can watch the replay though lol.
Great looking force!
Thank you very much.
Never played with or against Finn’s but they seem like they would be a tough force in BA. I like all the infantry with the upgraded rules.
On paper, the Finns are 2nd only to the Gurkhas. Lots of special rules. They even have guys who are all medics and basically you get to roll saving throws of 6s...after they've outflanked and waited in ambush. I know you're into different companies and their figures, so these ones are old AF compared to the newer Warlord stuff. They are smaller, and that's OK but, painting the same 9 guys over and over for a skirmish game is kind of lame.
Great job, what is this, army number 55? I'm looking forward to hear about the adventures you will have with my brother and Dave in Yokohama, it's going to be middle-age epic...
I think it's WW2 army 35, 36 or 37. I was counting the other day and then remembered I had an SS army and the Perry DAK too. If I put all the armies from all the eras together, then yeah. 55 sounds right. As for the painting getaway, I know we're all stressed out with work because it is that magical time of the year here where everyone is quitting, getting hired, rules get changed for no reason, etc. A lot of "count the paper clips" kind of BS. I'm sure the empty wine bottles will outnumber the figures painted. lol
Man, I wish I could just go down to the store and pick up some Tamiya for next to nothing! Lucky!!!
It's getting even cheaper in USD with the exchange rate going mental.
@@jvcpaints I need to send you some cash and hook me up with some sweet 1/48 goodness! It's been my preferred scale since I started WWII wargaming in the 90s. Back then, all you had in 1/48 armor was the old Bandai stuff and I think that stuff was more 1/43 to be honest.
Nice work
Thanks very much.
Lol always spot mistakes when your recording….
LOL. The tracks were the one mistake that I mentioned. There were a few more, but I kept my mouth shut. haha
