nothing harkings back to my childhood more then seeing people stuck in Chicago traffic. Spent half of my childhood waiting for a bridge to go down or a light to change to let three more cars through. ;-} cool vid. you both nailed the BB look in the opening.
Thanks for sharing. My dad and I have had two work trips to Chicago in our MYLR the last two weeks. We can get to Chicago with two charges but also if we take some side roads there's always a third charger. One thing that I don’t like is lack of manual control over preconditioning. It can use 10% of the battery and if you want to try and make it to the next station it is a little nerve racking. In any case I can just turn off trip planner to manage it if I want. It’s been fun as it gives my dad and I 15-30 min to chat while charging, rest our eyes, and stretch our legs. With autopilot and all the tech it’s definitely a nice way to road trip.
Thanks for watching! I don’t know of a way to restart preconditioning other than restarting the navigation, but you can turn it off by tapping the little block that comes up that says ‘Preconditioning for faster charge’ above your directions. Nav stays on but you save that range. I’ll do that sometimes, especially in winter if I’m playing it close, save the precon until I’m sure I’ll make it.
I get why you named your car Jake. I named my S Long Range James because I was hoping, and still hope, that one day if I've had one too many beers at Twin Peaks, I can get in and say, "Home, James." and have it drive me home.
Another fun trip! One tip in Rockford, there's a V3 just a few miles north of the one in the mall that you stopped at. I think it's in a Hy-Vee so you can at least get some food there. Lately I've been finding myself searching out V3's along the routes I take on a road trip. They're not everywhere, but man do they beat the V1/V2 superchargers.
Thanks for the tip! I’ve been to the mall location a few times so I didn’t even think to see if there was anything better nearby. I’ve never had a great experience at that spot, so hitting that V3 instead would be a nice change of pace.
I’m a new model 3 rwd owner as of early September. Did the Chicago trip from St. Paul about one week into ownership. Two stops on the way down: Lake Delton and Rockford, 3 on the way back. As a new owner, the tip turned out out to be pretty easy given the number of chargers available.
Great to hear! We picked up a Model S in Chicago in 2018 and drove it back, there are so many more chargers along the way now. Amazing how much growth there’s been in 4 years. Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed this video since I’m now familiar with some of the stops you made. From my limited experience, when I travel through Wisconsin again, I will try to avoid Eau Claire. It’s a little ways off the interstate, only 6 units, and 150 kw’s. It was crowded when I was there, so slow changing speeds.
Lots of fun & musically pretty good. Stage presence for both acts was a little like watching the bad knees tour, but fine & fun. I considered theming the music for the video in B-52s style, but there’s not much like that in the royalty free world.
No, I do keep a plug kit in the car and a small air compressor that can plug into the 12v outlet. We did have a couple flats on a road trip last summer and the plug kit saved our bacon. It would be nice to have a spare, but not necessary. I did look at a company called Modern Spare which offers small spares for Teslas, but last time I looked there was a long backlog for them.
@@brianriebedriveselectric thanks. Did you use the plug yourself or have a garage do it for you? Am I wrong that sidewall damage can’t be repaired with a plug? I like to travel off the beaten path here in Pacnw, and have never had a car without a spare tire. I already have a Leaf as our town car, and an older Subaru for road trips. I may just get a Toyota Hybrid for this reason amongst a few others.
@@MechayaAlta We used the plug kit to get us to a shop that could do a better long term patch. I do know someone in ND who's just kept the plugs in the tire, and multiple plugs in a single tire long term without issues, but I doubt that's recommended. You're right about the sidewalls though, I don't think they'll work on that kind of damage. Maybe enough to limp you somewhere if it's not a big tear. I do know some people keep a set of winter tires on rims, then if they have the space on a road trip they'll throw one of those in the vehicle as a spare. Depending on your use-case maybe a Toyota Hybrid would be the best option for now. I do know the Rivians can come with a spare, but they're pretty expensive and I'm not sure what the wait times are, but they seem pretty good in off-road situations. EV Dave just had to patch a tire while in Wyoming so if you want more info on that, here's his video: ruclips.net/video/B1WAmCllYBE/видео.html
Said it before, saying it again: best EV roadtrip thumbnail around!
Thanks for sharing another insightful trip.
Thanks Steve!

Thanks! Yeah, that traffic is always a wildcard & tough to plan around. I can’t imagine dealing with it everyday.
Very nice trip you sure put some miles on in three days Brian.
Thanks Dave! Trying to keep up with your Wyoming adventures.
Great thumbnail and bit! I’m loving your wholesome content.
Thanks, and thanks for watching!
Planning my first road trip with a RWD model 3 from Minneapolis to Chicago this weekend and your video made me so excited!
Glad to hear it! Have a great trip & watch out for da cops!

@@djk14 Yeah, that’s one of the old ones and still seems to get crowded up. Menomonie is a better option and closer to the interstate.
How was the concert? The B-52's were awesome live when I saw them. :)

Being a fellow south metro guy, we should check the southern route in via Rochester
Great idea!
I love this
Aw, love the nerd friends.
Great Video! Can you add how long it took to charge at each stop to the notes/chapters?
Thanks for watching Joe! I’ll do my best to get to it this weekend. Good idea to have a quick reference in the description.
Do you carry a spare tire on road trips?
