What is the putty you are using to reconnect the pieces? Why don't you put it under the whole thing as opposed to just the edges? Can the putty you are using be used to repair all stone types, or is it specific to that type of stone?

I only have the answer to one of these questions…but it’s better than nothing, right? 😊
What he is using is a 2 part epoxy putty (or sometimes called epoxy sculpt).
It is an incredibly durable, watertight and strong bonding adhesive (yet slightly flexible).
If I had to guess why he only uses it on the edges, it might be because he’s using it as more of a water barrier to prevent erosion/decay from reaching the core of the headstone, than as an actual adhesive.
      But again-that’s a pure guess.🤷‍♀️

What do you think would have been on the very top? I thought I saw a pin on the top.

Pins used to be used to hold these monumnets together, so you are correct in what you saw.

With these style monuments either a small angel figure, or a closed urn.

That is a torch. On the top should be a marble flame or an urn as in Cleaning the grave of Lucy Ann Johnsonruclips.net/video/ad7_X_55woE/видео.html
