Just to explain what you saw: these "June Parties" are called Midsummer in English. It's the same festival portrayed in the famous comedy written by William Shakespeare, _A_ _Midsummer_ _Night's_ _Dream_ . Of course, in the play Midsummer wasn't yet transformed into a Christian celebration.
Feast of St. John the Baptist celebrations have fallen out of favor in England since the Protestant Reformation. Today they're only really present in English speaking countries in the Swedish American community.
The *bonfire, poles and peasant theme* are part of the European tradition. The *food* is because of a native harvest festival that coincided with the Catholic party. The *Quadrille* is a 19th-century ballroom dance that inexplicably became really popular at Festas Juninas, so we always have them.
You don't need to know any of that to enjoy these "June Parties", 99% of Brazilians know nothing about what I wrote. But I thought it would be nice for you to know the background, as it really is something foreigners are usually quite weirded out.

Hey Vítor, thanks a lot for this explanation. I am really touched that you wrote so much to explain this tradition to me!
I love Midsummer Night’s Dream, and hadn’t connected the two events until reading your comment.
      Thanks again!

I'm a brazilian and is 100% true. No one knows about that(Me included before reading this.), all we know is there is parties everywhere with tons o delicious food that are super cheap and we can get drunk in churches, jump over fires, climb poles, use colorfull akward outfits, dance like kids and all with a priest by your side doing the same.

Didn't know hot wine was a traditional Christmas drink in UK. The festivities are different but either are celebrate during autumn/ winter which happen in different months of the year on each country.
