Photographing in Bad Light - Long Exposure Photography at Pyramid Rock, Phillip Island

- I've been known to say "there's no such thing as bad light just a lack of imagination" but some days you get out to a great location and the light is just blah!
In this video, I try to demonstrate a solution using long exposures and composing to accentuate shapes in a vertical or portrait format while shooting the classic scene of Pyramid Rock at Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia.
I hope you enjoy.

Beautiful photos and location mate! Philip island is indeed something special.
I like the color and the sepia. The black and white is too washed out. But the sepia has a really warm feel, which I like a lot. Very nice explanation of the process, which is new to me. Thanks, Ian!
Yes I agree, the colour one is the better one for me.
Color, Sepia and B&W.
I like the colour one the most. I've been there and should look back and see what compositions I chose. I like your composition. I also think you could even crop it square!
Derek Midgley Thanks. I was thinking of a square crop but didn’t want to lose the details rocks at the bottom. Good reason to go back and try a slightly wider angle. Thanks for your comments. Cheers, Ian
The sepia does it for me, very pleasing. Reminds of the prints British Rail used to have 60 to 70 years ago.
I prefer the colour version. Thanks.
Thanks, Ian. I prefer the colour portrait, mainly because of the salmon coloured rocks and the aqua in the sea. I've just ordered my remote, I've got two NISI ND filters, so I'll be practising what you preach, with my G9, on Fraser Island in early September. It's a tough life but someone has to do it.

Hey Mike, thanks as usual for watching and taking the time to comment. Love Fraser Island - have fun! Cheers, Ian
Really interesting mate, colour version works best for me 😊👍🏻
D Griff Gallery Thanks Dave, colour seems to be the favourite so far 👍
Number 1, number 3 is ok too!
for me I will go with the color one.. it just that bit of blue looks really nice.
I really like the color one. Nice green and pink along with the blacks. I too have the Lumix G9. I'm hoping to learn more about long exposure. I know nothing about it. I'm new to photography, this is my first camera and I have a Olympus 12-40 mm Pro lens. I'd like to get a wide and longer lens at some point. Maybe some time you can show how you go through your settings for getting pictures. That would sure help me out. Still love looking at your work though.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Thanks also for the suggestion re a video on settings. I have been thinking of doing something like that so have put it high on my to do list. Cheers Ian
the colour image, holds the mood the other are just pictures.
B&W for me, but I would like it with a bit more contrast and perhaps some D&B (I think the lack of it is why many others ditch the B&W). Maybe some very subtle split toning instead of sepia. I don't like the color version, but I'm unable to say why. Possibilities are nearly endless, I guess … ;-)
Christian Augustin thanks for watching and your comments. I agree re the colour version - others seem to like it but, for me, it doesn’t quite capture the essence of the scene.
@@IanSmissenPhotography Yeah, perhaps it looks a bit too nice and "cosy".
My eye is drawn to colorin this instance. I have the G9 and I think the Panasonic app does the long BULB exposure. I need to try that.
image came out rather nice though : )
Colour for me
I am with the colour crowd, sepia and then mono. Can you tell me what brand of ND filters you use? Thanks.
Wombo1 Thanks for watching and the comment. I use Nisi filters. Not cheap but high quality and incorporating the polariser into the adapter is the best I have seen. You can always use the Nisi adapter and other brand filters but I have also found Nisi really good to deal with in Australia.
Cheers Ian
@@IanSmissenPhotography Thanks Ian, much appreciated. keep up the great tutorials.
Prefer the color image. Thanks
Sepia followed by the colour, mono doesn’t work for me makes the image a bit flat.
Sepia for me jer
Jeremy Spencer Thanks Mate 👍
