- Testing out the mostly Boss pedalboard I recently put together. Consists of: Boss TU-3 Tuner, MXR Phase 90, CS-3 compressor, SD-1 Overdrive, DS-1 Distortion, TR-2 Tremolo, CH-1 Super Chorus, DD-3 Digital Delay, DD-7 Digital Delay, RV-5 Digital Reverb. I'm playing my stock Epiphone G400 through my Marshall MG100HDFX halfstack set completely clean on the clean channel. The Marshall cab has Warehouse Speakers Veteran 30s.
Nothing wrong with Boss, perfect balance of quality and value. Nice board mate
Agreed. They may not be the absolute best on the market, but they're much cheaper than boutique pedals and sound pretty good. What's more is that since some pedals aren't too expensive (such as the DS-1 or SD-1) you can mod them to your liking.
Cheap? Funny thing is that pedals usually cost 100+ and Boss pedals cost 400+ (Here atleast).
Wow! Where do you live, if you don't mind me asking? Where I'm at, Boss pedals are usually the less expensive options at my guitar store.
Brazil. Yeah, I suppose people think digital effects are better than analog here, so maybe that's why (or not, I can't tell really), well, to be honest i have some interest in digital pedals, such as pitch shifters and delays.
Boss effects are not Cheap but worth it.
came for the pedals, stayed for the clean picking
came for the pedals, stayed for the socks
DC: I could listen to you every day! Really enjoy the videos and tones and fingerwork that you come up with. Pleasant, fun, just overall good stuff. THanks
I also have a nice Boss pedalboard. Some of my pedals are the true vintage originals from the early 80s and were made in Japan. My DS-1 "Long Dash, Silver Screw", made in 1980, is by far the best classic rock distortion you'll ever hear! I also have a DM-2 Delay "Silver Screw, 3005 chip", made in 1981, that is the most luscious delay Ive heard in my life. I do have some modern Taiwan Boss pedals too (Blues Driver, Metal Core, '63 Fender Reverb) and they sound great too. But if you want the "real" Boss tone ya gotta pony up the dough and go vintage. Of course then you also have to get a pro level power supply with 12v outputs. A daisy chain wont cut it. One of my coolest Boss pedals is the XT-2 Xtortion, rare collectible that absolutely nails the 80s Hair Metal sound. It was made in Taiwan.
That's so cool!! I dont have any vintage Boss, but I have "The Boss Pedal Book" that came out 10 or 15 years ago and is now becoming collectible. Eventually I WILL obtain a long dash CE-2 at the very least! 😁
That intro to hold on sounded literally perfect
Their delays sound surprisingly great. And that chorus was sooo reminiscent of Rush, with and without the sd-1
Lennon/Ono Band Hold on! Excellent!! Great tour of your pedals too. Love your playing - real soul. Happy Christmas from London, mate.
Awesome playing bro, and after all these years boss is still the boss😊great board!!!!
love the subtle phase 90 in the boss setup cause just nothin compares to it...
pedals make it sound even cooler! since I don't own any, hearing it with pedals is so nice
I've seen guys on a blues award competition who had made their own pedal boards... It was awesome.
There are many 9v power supplies that fit all of them. Some of the older pedals, like the good ol' Tube Screamer and TS-9 (reissue) use an odd connection, but most new ones follow the Boss standard. Get the Onespot Combo pack and not only do you get a great, quiet power supply, but all the weird connector cables that you could ever need. They have one that has a 9v battery cable, which hooks right to the internal 9v terminal. Plus a daisy chain and the old style adapter.
Do you like Boss? :) I like Boss! I'm a poor musician and Boss gives one bang for the buck. I suppose if I had more money than sense I would go out and get the Boutique' pedal du jour instead I just got home 30 minutes ago with my new Boss CH-1. It sounds great and will last longer than I will. Play on.
Very well done! Nice playing style. And you get a nicer sound out of the DS-1 as I remembered it to be.
Some real nice playing there! Nice demo of the pedals too, I'm replacing some of mine for boss pedals so this was cool!
liking the variation in that setup!...
Love that you played some Lennon. Very cool.
That's a Behringer pedalboard.
Nice to hear that Lennon bit in between.
Would be nice to have a close up of each pedal as you are using to see your settings. I'm always eager to try different sounds after hearing someone elses.
Sounds great dude - lots of options for tone and texture here.
that's some awesome playing there dude, like the sounds.
This is an excellent review, every reviewer should watch this!
Rockabilly slap back on an SG & it sounds great. Great demo & playing.
@midibudu The pedals are all connected to one another with 3 inch patch cables. The box at the top is a Dunlop DC Brick. It supplies power to all the pedals.
No at 3:15 it's the orange phase shifter.. the MXR Phase 90. The blue chorus pedal (Boss CH-1) is heard at 1:40.
@MD2ReCoIL gain oriented pedals (wah, volume, compressors, overdrive, boost, and distortion) should be connected through the front of the amp. they tend to get muddy in the effects loop. modulation effects like chorus, delay, tremolo, and flangers go in the effects loop but in a certain order for the best tone. you can look that up on google if you want to know what order
IMO the best pedals on that board are the SD-1, the DS-1, and the chorus. That chorus is so nice...a nice analog delay would be much better than the DD-3/DD-7. Tremolo has a nice sound, reverb is "meh" and the compressor was somewhere between those two in sound quality. Thank you for sharing!
People seem to love or hate Boss. I'm mixed. I think whatever rig you have going here sounds good! I have not had the same luck with Boss's little stompboxes, but what they lack in tone they make up for with a wide array of sounds available and I own several of them (CE-5, PH-3, DD-7, TR-2) plus the ME-6, SL-20, and VE-20 (which sound great). I have since removed the PH-3 to make room for an MXR Custom Comp, but the PH-3 will supply "advanced space weaponry" on my "crazy board." :)
This is the second pedalboard in a row that I've seen that all the pedals are Boss except one: Phase 90. Since I own a Phase 90 & a Boss PH-3, I know why. Because Phase 90 sounds so much better. I would say the same for my E-H NeoClone vs. my CE-5 chorus, and my E-H MemoryBoy vs. my DD-7 delay. Boss effects often make it sound like you are playing in a fishbowl (the TR-2 trem is an exception), but they do give you more sonic choices than those I mentioned. You trade sound for versatility w/Boss.
@prioritiesandtypes Thanks! : ) I have the SD-1 Overdrive set with all knobs at noon. I have the DS-1 Distortion set with the TONE about 9 or 10 oclock and the DIST about 9 or 10 oclock also. In this video I had the DIST much higher but I've since found it's better to keep it lower and boost it with the overdrive pedal.
Nice Board Man, you cover a ton of ground with that Baby! Rock on!
While I disagree with you about Boss effects making it sound like you're playing in a fishbowl... I did watch your pedalboard video (1&2) and you have an amazing array of BEAUTIFUL guitar tones!! Well done! That old Boss ME-6 sounds really good! :)
Yeah I have an old PH-2 Super Phaser I bought back in 1987.. I've never really cared for it. I like the Phase 90 much better!
@dcooper830 Darn DC, I overlooked that it was your video as I always love your stuff. Please, when you get a moment, yes, make one with the close ups. Thanks and have a Great One.
Great board,man. I've been thinking of putting together a Boss board as well.
nice playing, nice pedals, nice guitar, nice tone, nice socks :)
@Blinkyboy99 well, the BOSS DS-1 was one of the few distortion pedals Kurt Cobain ever used (listed to their live album "from the muddy banks of Wishkah. almost all distortion is from the DS-1)
I'd like a set up like this - very cool and as others have said "tasty".
@Corinth6 It's a Behringer PB1000 pedalboard.
@radiocoldheadplay One is set for a long delay and one is set for a short slapback delay. That way u don't have to reach down and adjust it at a gig.
Nice video and cool licks. I'm in the market for some pedals myself, and it can get overwhelming with all the choices. Your video really helped. Peace.
Awesome rig setup man!!
2:18 "hold on" by john lennon
Most modern pedals (including Boss and MXR) can use pretty much any 9-volt center negative adaptor as long as it has enough milli-amps to power the pedal. If you get a Dunlop DC Brick, or a One Spot, or a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power... it can power most all your Boss, Ibanez, MXR, and Digitech pedals.
However... I have a Boss FRV -1 reverb pedal and, in the manual, it says "USE ONLY BOSS PSA 9-VOLT ADAPTOR" otherwise damage could occur. So maybe that particular pedal has specific requirements.
I really want one in all the demos it sounds exactly like the Phaser tone I have been chasing (and I own a Phase 100 and have owned the PH-2 and PH-3)
@londonemski Thank You so much! Merry Christmas from Illinois USA : )
I like how you played John Lennon's "Hold On" with the tremolo.
@TheJozhera I think the Boss BCB60 and DC Brick power supplies equal in quality. And they are good. But I've learned that one of the best power supplies to get for your pedals is the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2. It's the best because all power circuits are isolated which gives you the cleanest, noise free operation.
finally a pedal test with good songs being played!
in all the manuals says that you have to use their power supply, it's not true, if you use any adapter with the right voltage and Milli-amps, and the right connector, will work
MXR Phase 90 (Orange pedal) Forever alone since it's not by BOSS pedals :))
@prioritiesandtypes Thanks : ) As far as the volume pedal... It's the Boss FV500L model and I really like it a lot. I have another one I use for acoustic. I've had trouble with other volume pedals cutting highs as the volume is cut...... but not with the FV500L.
Nice neat board dude - two delays is very usefull and I agree, phaser before dirt - you get more swoosh that way - not a fan of the Boss compressor or the Orange distortion but the super overdrive is nice once you find the sweet spot - do you have a buffer pedal at the front of your chain? - if not, this coupld really help preserve your tone - you are pushing your signal through a lot of connections here - nice job Cheers S.P.
@Blinkyboy99 The Boss DS-1 isn't too bad their ST-2 pedal gives a great selection between a good crunch and some high gain stuff
oh that phaser part..i just died in heaven
well done,you have grat pedal man,and you are great player
@RushFan413 That's a Boss FV-500L Volume Pedal.
want the delay, tremolo and maybe reverb. Already have chorus ensemble, super overdrive, metal zone, super octaver and crybaby, not nearly enough pedal board lol
Ha...Yes I like the TR-2, but I agree on the PH-3, though it does have some nice effects for crazier experimental type sounds, but it will never replace my Phase 90...You trade sound for versatility sometimes...
Great set up. What's the small black box top left with the light in the center? Is that some sort of power adapter and if so did it come with the board?
@fgonzalezb2012 I'm using the Behringer PB1000 instead of the orginal Boss board cause it holds more pedals. I think the Boss board only holds 6. The Behringer can hold up to 12.
That's sick. I want this board.
@zmaels Yes a crybaby will fit there. I think the Behringer PB1000 power supply should work fine for you. If not, you can always use your Boss PSA power. The DC Brick has a separate line going to each pedal.
At 3:15 was Pink Flloyd sound for sure!! great playin 2
@ArtDonna84 Yeah I'm gonna try to do another one with the camera right on the pedals. I agree that would be nice so you can actually see the settings. : )
Great Video and awesome pedal board/containter (I mean the actual housing of the pedals not the pedals themselves) PB 100J is it? Just asking coz it looks like it would be perfect for my Boss Pedal collection.
Thank you :) Yes, it's the Behringer PB1000. I have one for electric and one for acoustic and they've lasted me nearly 15 years so far. I highly recommend!
@GuitarMasterGraeme A cheaper power supply can cause noise. I'm using a Dunlop DC Brick (which is not the best). I've heard the best to use is the Voodoo Labs Pedal power... or the BBE Supa Charger.
If you're still getting noise maybe look into getting higher quality connecting cables.
Or it might have something to do with the amp you're using and the way it's reacting to the pedals.
I hope this helps.
@kelmaur
I basically agree, but there are logical conventions that people came up w/ and follow, logical reasons for following them, and aural benefits inherent in following them. I didn't say "wrong," I simply said strange. It is not how I or thousands of other players would arrange a pedalboard, but it ends up sounding good, so that's all that really matters~shrug~
great board, dave
@Blinkyboy99 Kurt Cobain used a DS-1 distortion, like the one in this video. Classic pedal with a great sound in my opinion.
nice board. nice playing. ever think of using an FX Looper like a MOEN GEC9 with true bypass? i'm putting a pedal board together after about 8 years of going minimal (2-3 pedals), and in my research, i've read that going w/these true bypass loopers retains the integrity of your tone. i agree based on the vids i've on youtube. just putting it out there. any thots on true bypass/tone integrity?
@miniscooch That's the MXR Phase 90.
@metalguitar1011 Oh.... I don't use the power supply that came with the Behringer board. I get less noise with the DC Brick
That’s a pretty nice set up and how many petals in all and what are your main ones
@whattheworldrejects Yeah I usually like modulation after dirt... especially chorus. But I like phase shifter before dirt most of the time.
NICE GUITAR PLAYING!!!
Hi man! I got a question, does the pb1000 comes with power supply? Why are you using the brick? Is better than the integrated power supply? Thanks! Nice pedalboard!
Hugo Acosta yeah it comes with the power supply bro,I just to have one of those
@georgia24hb It's the Behringer PB1000. A very handy pedalboard for only about $100. : )
What a guitarist !.
I love how it says "boss" pedalboard test, when there's the mxr phaser! XD haha that's ok tho, you got a nice set up man!
Here's an interesting concept; what if he really loves the Boss pedals and the sound works for him? lol
@dcooper830 great! I also have SD1 and DS1 and i'm always trying to get the best config out of these 2 incredible pedals. I think the combination you just described makes perfectly sense. What do you think of the Boss volume pedal?
Actually.. I have a Boss BF-2 flanger which I love... I've been considering putting it on there... thanks : )
@metalguitar1011 The DC Brick supplies power to all the pedals.
this looks so much neater than mine i have wires flying all over the place
you should try boss pedals they sound good
@Blinkyboy99
The BOSS OS - 2 Overdrive/Distortion pedal
Been playing live bands for too long ( 35yrs). Ive found that some brands work better with some amps, I have a 89 jcm 2205 that absolutely loves digitech stuff. Not just the hardwire, but the the cheaper x series too. Some of the boss stuff has to go when im gigging that amp. BUT my plexi loves boss stuff and doesent do as good with digitech. So in the end it's application specific. Also the digitech standard of 100 ohm output imp. is 10 times less than the Boss 1K ohm output. The lower impedence of the digitech will drive longer cables and loads better with less signal loss. I like to keep a digitech of some sort on the end for that reason. Boss (and digitech) are more than enough quality for live settings.
Great stuff, man!
Nice demo....can see you're using an epiphone guitar...what amp are you using?
great demo
I believe he's using medium gauge cotton thread D-20's.
best video ive seen in along time :)
I'm using a Line 6 AC adapter on my FRV-1 and it seem to work just fine..
yeah, i observed that too. Do we have Boss socks? how about MXR socks?
@Blinkyboy99 Deffo a DS-1, Kurt used that and only that (according to a magazine I read a while back) when it comes to distortion. :)
Hello DCooper! I'm thinking about buying a volume pedal. Are you satisfied with you Boss volume pedal. I was thinking about going with the Boss FV-50 (?) or FL-50(?) the one with the tire looking rubber on it. Any help would much be appreciated! Thank you. Your rig sounds killer by the way!
you're a master! i have almost the same set like you. Is there any reason why you put the phaser before the compressor? What settings do you use for that compressor?
@MD2ReCoIL I just plug it all into the front input of the amp.
