Ferrari 360 Spider - Rare Gated Manual

  • When the Ferrari 360 Modena debuted in 1999, it was the first Ferrari to have an aluminum chassis, multi-mode traction control, and fully-independent electronically-adjustable suspension. It was the last Ferrari to use the Dino-derived V8, which displaced 3.6 liters and put out roughly 400 hp.
    The 360 Modena was produced from 1999-2005. In 2000, Ferrari introduced the convertible, aka the 360 Spider. Then, in 2003, the 360 Challenge Stradale. Due to convertibles needing to be strengthened ( no roof = more body flex) the 360 spider weighs 130 lbs more that the coupe.
    2,389 Ferrari 360 Spiders were built for the US Market, with only 670 being produced with the gated 6-speed manual transmission. With just over 20,000 miles and in a stunning color combination, this Ferrari 360 Spider is comparatively affordable, reliable, and user friendly. It would be an excellent option as a first Ferrari or addition to an already established collection.

    I would always go for a 6spd Manual and I enjoy my 5spd manual 348 a lot, but I actually disagree about the F1 transmissions, they did actually get it right. They are very interactive and are sensitive to the way you drive them especially the 355 since it has a mechanical throttle and not an E throttle which means the ECU can't blip and match the revs on gear changes. Its entirely possible to drive them smoothly, I have driven a friends 355 extensively with a preconceived notion that I would not like the F1 transmission, but in actual fact I really enjoyed it. No the 355 does not shift as quickly as the later DC Transmissions like the 458 has, but they are a lot of fun to drive if you get it right.........

    Very well presented car and well described. I'd certainly go for the manual due to the reduced complexity compared to the F1, and from my experience they didn't get the F1 clutch programming right until the mid-2008 F430 update. Immediate things to spot on the hood are first any marks on the plastic rear window and second any significant creases on the buttresses. The first is a sign of the elastics weakening and the second that the car has been stored with the top down, often leading to cracks in the fabric. But the $6000 you quote for a replacement is the factory price for a complete new roof; a good specialist can make and install one to factory standard for around half that.

    The "lurchiness" is an over used assessment, IMO. The F1 in a 360 shifts smoother than humans with a stick in most situations. The preference for the stick should be for driver involvement. If you're concerned about shifts that aren't smooth by today's boring cars, don't buy a 20+ year old car. And as far as not getting right.. these F1 systems were the first of their kind. Way better than what Porsche was offering at the time. It's easy to judge a older car by today's standards. It needs to be judged by its contemporaries. Most people don't cross shop 360's and 488's.

    I'm beginning to really HATE these cars. When they were new, everyone laughed at the prospect of manual-transmissions because all of the 'hot data' on the acceleration, lap-times and skidpad numbers were generated with F1 paddle-equipped cars, and that's what you needed to beat Porsche and Lambo and anything American 'on the street'. TODAY - they're collector-car status, and demand higher values (100% markup) than F1-equipped cars. You can get a 360 Modena F1 for $65K ALL DAY on ebay, AutoTrader, and BaT.

      Personally I've always hated these cars. These and the 550 Maranellos. These two models are what made me hate Ferrari. When this car came out in 1999 I exclaimed....they can't be serious, really, this is the best they can do?! The 355 and 456 are the end of the Ferrari line as far as I'm concerned. These two cars are beautiful masterpieces compared to the bogus ugly 360 and 550 Maranello. I was on vacation in 1999 with my family and when I came home and bought a road & track magazine and saw the 360 on the cover I was like HA HA very funny Ferrari, good April Fools day prank Ferrari now seriously where is the beautiful car you are ACTUALLY coming out with. When I found out that the 360 was not a joke, I was like Fuck that and have hated Ferrari ever since. To me this car and the 550 were the downfall of Ferrari. If someone gave me the keys to either one of these cars or anything Ferrari has made in modern times, I would throw the keys back at them and tell them to go fuck themselves.

    • @Kidsinamerica
      @Kidsinamerica 3 года назад +1

      @@redmr2na The reason to purchase a 360 over a 355 is maintenance. The 355 is an utter maintenance nightmare. The repair bills and quality of the drivetrain is horrible. The 360, however, they finally got "right" when it came to reliability and usability - just start and go. Better engine temperature management, easier AND cheaper to service, aluminum coachwork (no rust worries). The styling? Well, its an acquired taste - Ferrari, like other manufacturers, were designing-by-windtunnel. It was all-about raising the performance bar to compete with Porsche and Lamborghini (who was exploding with Audi's German-quality Engineering and investment dollars).

    • @Domcel
      @Domcel 3 года назад

      @@Kidsinamerica yes the scarcity does run up the price. Supply and demand controls more than just car prices. The demand however is from car enthusiasts wanting the manual experience which is more engaging. Maybe for younger drivers they don't care, don't have the experience or just don't know the difference. For me the only option was it had to be gated. Didn't care if it was a spider or a Modena, and was not set on a specific color.
