I built one back in 1980. It uses a 1966 or newer VW modified front suspension, with air shocks{to raise it for driveway entrances}. We had a 400ci in Chevy engine and yes it uses a Corvair transaxel turned upside down.. It also uses a square tubing Frame(Manta's).. Ohio law required we install a Parking brake{we used a Line lock), Turn signals, and other small stuff.. The biggest headache was mounting and aliening the headlights{vacuum controlled}.. Fitting of parts was a headache also, as Quality was not their middle name..
There was an old abandoned manta in a field on a farm in our town, was there for years and disappeared one day. I always thought it was a coyote kit car till I stopped and looked at it one day, got yelled at by the owner "its not for sale" LOL
Figure the wheels were from the 80's or early 90's era. When most of your choices were the star pattern and chrome. Unless you chose specialty billet wheels which run ya easily from 1 to 2 grand, before adding rubber in those days.
Hardcastle and McCormick used Volkswagen powered cars and I didn't even know it when I was a kid but you can see in many shots that they definitely used Volkswagen chassis in many scenes
I used to love those fiberglass bodies.. then they got a bad wrap , due to them not being the real thing.. but the truth is, I never stopped loving fiberglass kitcars.
I'd definitely think. This being an 83 those chrome rims are way too new. Apparently they use a mustang 4 and 5 bolt pattern so I'd imagine much beefier wheels on it originally. veh-markets.com/cars/other-cars-c/149120-1985-manta-mirage-can-am-mclaren-m8.html
I just watched the original Gone in 60 Seconds last night and they had a new on there. The wheels on this one are unfortunate, but the rest of the car looks OK. The Chevy van tail lights seem out of place to me.
As nice as it is as a smooth street car, that has a lot of potential to really look the part of a street driven race car, If it were minevand I had the money, I think It would look great with roadrace style minilite wheels and fat tires, a wild 70s vintage race car styled paint job and sponsor decals, add an all aluminum big block chevy with those crazy fuel injection stacks dressed in era correct speed parts, it would look like a Can Am car with a roof......I can dream right!
Doesn't look like there's any room for luggage unless you're traveling alone, so forget about driving cross-country in this. Otherwise, it's a great car.

I imagined when he said, "every time someone wrecks a McLaren," That this thing was built with broken salvage parts and that's why it looks so disproportionate.
I feel like this car looks like what a kid would draw for a sports car
That car is freaking awesome! Those wheels..... not so much!....They would look much better in a dumpster!
This car (and its Owner) used to live just down the road from me until they moved to warmer weather. Lol

If you don't like this car then I have to ask what's the Manta with you?
Kool machine !
Hardcastle and McCormick was a TV show in the 80's that featured this car
Both were made by Manta, but the TV show used a Montage. That was a fun show.
The wiki has a good description of the car

The poor man’s Magnum PI.
I was going to say that I'd never seen one...yet had the feeling I had.TY.
No different car in that , that was a Coyote
Yes! Thanks Dennis.

I wasn't planning on paying for it. 👺
They made them from 74 to 86.
Those wheels gotsta go...barf

Amazing car!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I had a McLaren Hot Wheels car as a kid. This Manta version brings back fond memories! (I never wore Daisy Duke shorts tho..!!)
Remember the Testarossa body kits for the cars and trucks back in the late 80's early to mid 90's
For trucks?? Gotta see one of those!
@@emanemanrus5835 Was made for the Mazda B2200 truck body
Google Truxarossa 🤗
HEy GUYS!! The wheels and shorts are from like 2005 Canada, so calm down with ur month old opinions!
It would look so much better with indy mags or bbs wheels.. wth are those
How can a 327 be stroked to a 402? Is that possible? This looks to be located in Kelowna BC.
The wheels look very recessed in the wheel wells. Is that because the body is designed for wider wheels?

If that Manta had a alot wider rear tire tucked underneath it then it would look even more awesome. It could use alot of rear tire.
YOU KNOW THOSE CUT OFF JEAN SHORTS CAME WITH THAT CAR FROM THE FACTORY
Lol.. you also got the choice of Op's
Great Looking Car ... Terrible Rims .... ugh !
They look like they're off of 2000s Porsche.
Maybe they're American racing
IT's old film, like 2005

How can you have such a badass car then completely overlook the wrong size and type of wheel???
Who likes short shorts?
SHARP
Needs different wheels though. I'm all for larger wheels , but they can't be too big, and need to fit the stock look

Looks like Ferrari on a Fiero kit car body 🏎️🤭
I think racer X drove this car ? Get rid of that motor, needs a Jag motor. Would look beautiful in that.
Getting famous off comments day 192, so I can live the dream, live everyday like it’s your last day🚀🤙🚀
The wheels are hideous...🤮🤢
There is no way that was based off a mclaren, looks like it was based off a Mark IV Ford.
I thought so too but it took some digging, Look at the rear, it's the M8D not the M8A

Manta Cars used the McLaren Can-Am car as the body shape for their Mirage but made it into a closed-cockpit coupe instead of an open-cockpit M8.
