External Synths + Ableton Live - A Routing/Reamping Workflow

  • Heyo! This is how we handle recording (volatile aka fun!) hardware synths into the DAW with the ability to 'reamp' or rout the recorded raster data back into the chain that contains all of the vector automation data.
    8:50 in: We use a little trick to route the audio back in using a solo'd sidechain input of a compressor plugin with it's FX mix set to 0%. Then you can turn this plugin on/off to A/B select which source... ON means the source is the external audio and OFF means the source is the software instrument on this track.
    A little hard to explain in words so check out the video! It's incredibly useful for folks who have hybrid systems between a DAW and some form of external instruments that need to be recorded due to their volatility. This method also reinforces a forward pointing motion in regards to the ideal times to bake raster data for these types of synthesizers.
