He was probably just one of "those guys" who thinks women can't play, and also judges musicianship on how fast you can play. One thing you will notice with a Kanami solo, it's all about the song. There's no "look how great I am" about it - it's there too add to the song, not to show off.

I've seen them live two years ago - two hours show. As a veteran musician, I've seen most usual greats once or several times in my life - and you know musicians are often a demanding audience, right? This Band-Maid gig is in the top 5 of my whole life. After the concert I was exhausted (much more than them!) and happy for weeks, with a permanent silly smile on my face. They're the real deal. They're actually challenging and stimulated me as a musician.

Don't get me wrong they were awesome gigs and the Santana gig was flawless but, 2hrs with Band-Maid in Islington Assembly Hall... Topped em all. Mediocore musicians? WOW! Someone really has no understanding of musicianship and is totally in his FAN mindset without giving any other bands credit. These are the guys that just know EVERYTHING about their holy grail and nothing else. Band-Maid and especially Kanami (main songwriter) are freaking GOOD in terms of music... Their riffs, breaks, bridges, always changing the verses, catchy chorusses and especially timing is brilliant and seemless! The whole midsection of solos was especially made for this live performance and they do that EVERY concert. A little new solo here, an new intro there, it never gets boring and they have to remind all that which is crazy!
I don´t say they are the BEST (for me they are, but that´s just my opinion), but to discredit their work without any knowledge is just jealousy and pure stupidity... SORRY! Just the truth... Enough of that!
Great reaction again, i am always looking forward to your Band-Maid videos, sometimes i look some other reactions too, because i love your content, but most of the time i am here for the maids. Metal isn´t really my thing and Band-Maid has hit the perfect mix for me... In that clip we see a lot of simple open "power" chords and she's always had an aggressive punky style of strumming. Is it especially complex? Not especially, but try and stand toe to toe and play through one of their concerts with her and not screw up somewhere... many times. Their timing and compositions are not standard 2 hours of 4/4. Just play the change ups in Onset with her... not easy.

After realizing it couldn't be Saiki, she stepped up and took on learning to play guitar. What makes it exceptional is she also learned to sing and play NOT EASY!! They have literally never faked playing an instrument EVER. Where do people get that idea from ??? This is just some misogyny stuff from people who can't accept a non english speaking band made of all girls actually write songs and play that good. There has been fan recorded footage of them playing in small venues since they started where you can literally hear everything straight from the amps recorded from phones with the instrument right in front of the camera and still people doubt them.
I don't even need to start talking how absurd it is to fake playing an instrument (it literally takes more effort to do the faking well than to actually just learn and play the actual instrument)
Edit: Actually I found that commenter, it's a guy called "@Thirsty Tuna Taco" who first claimed they don't play (and ironically posted it on the Freedom Live performance where all the band members' instruments where very clear and you can literally see everything that happens, he could've easily proved himself wrong) then claims it's actually only the rhythme guitarist doesn't play and when proved wrong just kept saying his fav band is better than band-maid, just a fucking fanboy of some band who feels hating on other bands somehow makes his band better.

I am German and grew up in the 1960s and 70s. I listened to music in English, French, Italian, and Irish for example. I only learned English and French and without the internet, there were not many sources to get lyrics, if any, even less so translations. BAND-MAID TRIVIA: All five members are from different prefectures: Miku is from Kumamoto Prefecture; Saiki is from Kamanashi Prefecture; MISA is from Okayama Prefecture; Akane is from Hyogo Prefecture (which is also where Tomomi from SCANDAL is from); and Kanami is from Kanagawa Prefecture. Akane's primary instrument in music school was trombone. Kanami is a classically trained pianist, guitar being her 2nd instrument. Miku went to voice school for 3 years. Saiki plays acoustic guitar. Akane and MISA went to the same music school. Akane and MISA were in the backup band for the incredibly lame J-Pop singer, Becky.
They got together as follows: Miku wanted a band and saw Kanami's RUclips solo videos. Miku then asked Akane to join, who asked MISA to join. Miku tricked Saiki into joining, when she decided her voice wasn't strong enough alone for the kind of music she wanted to make.

Another excellent reaction. I've been playing rock guitar for over 30 years. If you're referring to who I think you might, I've responded to him regarding how these girls play, then asked him if he played. He didn't respond. Of course on the music videos they mime to playback, but so does everybody. That's just how it's done. But there's no question they're playing live. Do they occasionally use added backing tracks? Sure. But so do many. It's when it's used to augment the performance, not to "replace" the performance is when it's cool. Lovebites does this too with awesome results. No one would question their playing. I know I'm preaching to the choir. You know all this. I'm just joining the rant. I'm looking forward to you two reacting to their live performance of "Manners/Black Hole" that they've just dropped. Cheers!

Again, welcome aboard, Harry & Sharlene. You are embarking on (along with many others - 117 million YT views!) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (over 100 songs with their latest album, “Unseen World”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular.
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ruclips.net/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/видео.html Their later songs from albums Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Warning, No God, H-G-K, Black Hole, Different, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts! And many are represented with nearly 40 well produced music videos. ruclips.net/user/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts. Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (“Domination” ruclips.net/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/видео.html), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids are excellent. Here’s four of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. These two taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: ruclips.net/video/__1th7ctgMo/видео.html, and a fun, wonderful live performance in Amsterdam of Miku introducing "Don't You Tell Me" (with MISA & Kanami's great instrumental exchange) and "Turn Me On” (with MISA's solo intro): ruclips.net/video/kfYQoWBlSpk/видео.html. The next one was taken by JT Dayo in LA: ruclips.net/video/4uIYBkAybCI/видео.html, and finally by JOSER8845 in LA: ruclips.net/video/usWZvlGGDSs/видео.html. If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
    Band-Maid members are:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 27 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 29 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 29 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 30 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 28 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

LOL they will be found. You are not the only one to say it about the guitar in this mix. However still fantastic for a live show. I've heard some pretty awful live mixes. They just came out with a new live video too! It's a double of Manners and Black Hole. I thought again the guitar was a bit muted on the first song. But the bass was fantastic so...still good lol?

They play at a high level... And do it with a smile!
How many other bands do that? :D

8:00 Yes, the mix is a little off, but here's the thing. Many of their live performances are better than the studio versions.
Like true musical artists, they tinker with the arrangements, intros and outros, keeping their material fresh, not just to themselves, but also the audience.

3:11 - Kanami, Miku and MISA are crowding around Akane, the drummer, and playing Hengao (strange faces), with the intention of putting Akane off by pulling funny faces. It shows how much confidence and trust they have in each others' abilities and musical skills as no-one misses a beat as they mess about. 4:03 - MISA, the bassist, is holding her plectrum in the web of skin between her thumb and finger so she can change from slapping to picking in half a nanosecond, which is a skill not many master. 5:44 - Just a glimpse of Kanami laying down one of the sweetest ever rolling patterns of chords I've seen (and I've seen Zappa, Page, Gilmour and Carlos play live). Not only will everyone commenting today disagree with the commentator you mention but so does Jimmy Page as he went backstage at one of their gigs to ask if he could have a selfie with Akane, the drummer! Oh, and Band-Maid released two songs from their May streamed live concert (why aren't more bands doing that?) today - ruclips.net/video/iaf94nNSRGE/видео.html .

They play amazing. Miku did not play guitar in the beginning. She supposed to be the leadsinger. But she wanted to do more, especially playing the guitar. So the wanted another leadsinger and found Saiki. And Miku started to learn play the quitar from Kanami. She is now a great guitar player and of course a good background singer. Great performance and song. Thank you for this reaction.

Miku wanted and expected to be lead singer. But she realized her voice didn't have the sustainable power to front the formidable band she had assembled doing the kind of music they ultimately wanted to do. So she stepped back and in some interviews they apparently auditioned several. Saiki impressed them all including her - but she and Saiki didn't meet in person (per Saiki in interview) until the dress rehearsal the day before their first exhibition performance.
Her decision to step back and let that happen was beautiful, but the others told her she needed to play an instrument then, and they could use a second guitar and she agreed - AFTER it was decided to get a stronger lead vocalist.

It's pretty well agreed that the mix on this live video doesn't push the guitars forward enough, for who knows what reason. But it is what it is, sadly. Apparently for the Shibuya live they aimed for a different type of mix - one that highlighted the sounds from audience participation. So they apparently used floor mics, for example, instead of mics I suppose focused more on the instrumentals. It's a crappy mix for anyone actually focusing in on the music. Credit to the musician-reactor on the left for immediately noticing how badly the guitars were mixed, and admirably adjusting. Overall tho it's a fun mix and captures the performance chops of the band, and so I think for more casual listeners it's a big win. This is one of my favorite compositions by Kanami, and I think to really appreciate it musically you need to hear the studio version afterwards.

He told my friend they were overwhelmed and shocked how loud the audience was. According to him, now I'm no expert at this. But that's partly why the guitars were hard to hear. At least that's what I was told. You would be a better judge of that than me. I was at the Dallas show. You could get all the instruments clearly.

It only seems to be an issue with this particular show, because other live recordings that they've released are very well-mixed.

I doubt if any band in the world has published more videos of their instrumentalists isolated while playing their songs. There are dozens. Very cool and thus not surprising from them.

I saw them live in Dallas. These ladies are legit bad asses on stage. I was front row right in front of Kanami. That lady is a modern Japanese female EVH. And the rest of them are all top notch. If you can see them live do it. They are pretty funny between songs. Kanami wanted a hug from Saiki for her birthday. She is so quiet shy and bashful acting when she's not playing. And when she got that hug she jumped up and down smiling and laughing like a mus...lol Later on Kanami whispered something in Mikus ear. Miku walked away said to audience she is so dead. Even Misa laughed to that...lol.
Akane you could see her smile throughout the entire place for the entire show. I don't know why in the videos you can barely hear Konamis guitar. But when you're at their shows you can hear her just fine. There's got to be something in a way it's mixed for the videos.

BAND-MAID do play to backing tracks, but you would never know unless something goes wrong. They have a video of that out there too. And they don't have to have the backing tracks. The computer has gotten lost with the luggage. They were more worried about the sneakers they bought in L.A. than the computer. They just rearranged the set list. Everything was fine, and the missing luggage was found. But Kanami records all the backing tracks anyway.

    Love Band Maid ...
I agree the guitar should be raised in volume, I find that it should in all band maid stuff

The blu-ray this video is on is quite spectacular. I agree - the guitars tend to be a little lower in the mix than I'd want, too. It's gotta be a deliberate choice, (as opposed to an engineer who fell asleep at the wheel) since this seems to happen pretty regularly-maybe more often on live recordings. One solution is to go see them live and stand right in front of Kanami, which I've had the great fortune to do. But that's not always practical, even w/o a pandemic.

You ask what would be the point of faking something perfectly? Well, Kanami has the answer to that (who else?)! There was a "making of" video for the Endless Story MV and, while the other band members were doing their solo stints in front of the cameras, Kanami was sitting on her own practicing the lead guitar break so that, even though she would technically be miming to the recorded version, her fingers would match the sound perfectly! That is the sort of attention to the tiniest detail that makes me love this band so much.

Have you noticed, that Misa is using a 5-string-bass, even to let her smaller fingers grip a wider tonal range ? That's great - Babymetal- BO is using a 6-string bass for his artistc improvisations and only a few musicians in the metal scene are using a "seven". Not crucial to know, but very interesting, I guess . . .
