It's a great example of how homage can have so much more impact than parody, when used in film and TV at least.
This was one of my mom‘s favorite movies, and our family adored it. We could quote almost every single line. She passed away this year, and I had the chance to take my father and sister to a theater in Los Angeles where they were showing it on 35 mm. Almost 22 years after the first time we saw it in theaters. I don’t think I’ve ever cried as hard as I did that day. The magic of watching Hogarth discover the giant’s flying ability, and the sheer heart breaking score that majestically plays over the giant’s sacrifice. One of the greatest movies ever! This one was one of my families favorites as well, my father passed away 2 years ago and the movie forsure hits a little different. ESPECIALLY the deer scene. Probably will cry everytime I see it from now on, and hopefully my future kids will adore the movie just as much as we do.
Fun fact: Ted Hughes actually created a follow-up book for The Iron Man 25 years later called The Iron Woman. As The Iron Man focuses on anti-war themes, The Iron Woman’s main themes revolve around environmental destruction and pollution. The main character of the story besides the Iron Woman is a young girl named Lucy, who actually gets in contact with a grown version of Hogarth from the previous book.
I would LOVE to see a film adaptation of this story, whether it is a sequel to The Iron Giant or not. If it keeps getting ignored, I might direct one myself.

I’m so vindicated about animating on-twos even with CGI for that feeling. So many people in present CG communities, even non-photoreal ones, are like “what’s the point? More FPS is better!” 🤦♀️ I learned on stop-motion and the difference between 1s and 2s is so important to different types of sequences.
So true, The Iron Giant is definitely one of the most iconic yet saddest animated masterpieces of all time!
I especially loved how the reason why the Giant sacrificed himself in the end is because it was thanks to Hogarth and all his experiences on Earth that the Giant learned that he could be more than just a mindless war machine he could've been a force for good but the giant also knew that since the whole thing with the missile was being caused because of him he didn't want to see another planet be destroyed because of him so the giant decided that the best way to save the planet was to save it from himself ergo sacrificing himself and being blown up.
I strongly recommend to rewatch the movie, till the last minute.
It seems to me you forgot one last scene, trust me, it's a blessed ending!
@@92snowboarder I have not forgotten and i am offended that you would just assume that i forgot how the movie ends, it seemed like the giant was destroyed by the missile but it turned out he was actually alive and was using his self repair mode to call all of his missing parts to his head which ended up in Iceland.

For me that last scene in which the Giant rebuilds himself changed everything (in positive of course) considering, as you said, it WAS a sacrifice since the giant didn't expect to survive.

This film is my favorite movie of all time. Period. Its themes and characters have always been something I latched onto intensely. Even more so now that I'm an adult. I'm non-binary, but a 6'3 amab person and sometimes I feel like the Iron Giant. I feel like that my size and the masc presentation, that is difficult to change or step out of, inadvertently causes destruction or fear in others that I don't intend to. Or that people see me and expect those things of me, that I can't be anything more than what they see me as. The Iron Giant reminds me that we are more than what is intended or expected of us. We can be something greater and even something beautiful, and be positive change in the world. And this is only scratching the surface of what this film means to me. Thank you for covering this movie, getting to learn more about it makes me appreciate it even more.
The Giant’s animation is so amazing. It’s a great design and I can’t even pick up on the CGI in the design. It matches the animation so perfectly.
This was one of my go-to's as a kid. Honestly one of the movies to blame for the high bar I have for great story-telling, the Cold War paranoia being a looming shadow for the whole thing.
I could cry everytime the Giant closes his eyes about to stop the rocket. He smiles just because he has the hope of doing the right thing, like Superman

"Suuuppperrrmannnn 😌" always gets a year in my eye even over 20 years later.
As a 7 year old I think I understood what bravery meant. It wasn't because the iron giant sacrificed himself because he wanted to save his friends and family. It was because he did so in spite of his fear of death.
I would also like to respectfully dissagree on you Kiki with the how the military is portrayed in the movie. On one hand hogarths father was a WWII fighter pilot and is always mentioned in a positive light. The general in the viewers first glimps is scene and portrayed as a by the numbers kind of man. Although clearly annoyed by Mansleys late call, he still picks up and tells him that he cannot send anyone over unless he is able to produce some form of evidence.
Later the general is talked down by Dean, a motorcycle riding beatnik. This is borderline insane given the social context of the scene.
He then scolds Mansley and goes out of his way to give Hogarth the only peice the giant that they could find.
The military (or at least the general) is portrayed in a surprisingly human light. Not overglorified as heros and ubermench, not pure evil as we could also see, they are human living in a time of fear of the unknown. If Mansley is the worst aspects of the government, the General is definitely supposed to be the best aspects of it.
I suppose by modern film standards that's still an extremely negative portrayal -- as a powerful, human organization comprising people capable of both great good and great evil, magnifying the consequences of either sort of action to grand extremes that allow one villain to ruin everything; rather than as a mythologized entity of axiomatically-good divine judgement. But I think animated media in general tend to give more honest portrayals than most film, as they don't have to take on military directorial influence in order to get access to props to film with like live-action films do.
Annnd that's another primordial memory from a commercial! I was at my grandma's house and the "is there anymore coffee" commercial was on... As I threw my brand new silver and black Buzz Lightyear in an attempt to make him fly.

The Iron Giant is my favorite film of all time. Learning more about the history of the film and how VERY different it was from the book and the original ideas, its a relief that modern day musical and rapping additions were left out. 😂

I just lost my most recent partner to an overdose, and this was one of their favorite childhood movies. I'm going to be discussing both the book and movie in my screen adaptation class which drew me to your video. I had no idea both Ted Hughes and Brad Bird were coping with loss before they worked on both versions of the story. It's truly beautiful how this story unites us all and makes us feel connected with those we lost. Souls don't die.

Absolute Gem here; I got lucky to see a re-run in theaters when they released a newer version with a couple of bonus scenes; which I might add were incredibly tasteful and fit into the rest of the film seamlessly. I will always love this film ❤️❤️

as a child i used to have nightmares about the iron giant. It was still my favourite movie nonetheless. still is among my favourite movies.
This vid does a great job in mentioning just the scope of what was discussed, most especially the military industrial complex and how culpable it is in separating families in various ways through propaganda, recruitment, and of course threat of separation.
The most horrifying part of this movie on second pass, and honestly that feeling was always sorta there even as a kid but in a different manner, is the way you constantly feel this presence that something is ever-looming over you that can take you away from your family. At first you view this as coming the Giant, and then maybe some foreign country dropping nukes as discussed in that classroom segment. Cue the US military bringing in armies, nukes, and of course the threat of separating families forever.
There's an overlay of army recruitment and literal "brainwashing" throughout the film in its visual motifs (the horror movie Hogarth watches, the radio wave imagery strewn all throughout the film) and is often paired with red to highlight this theme. To contrast this, the color blue is often represented with communication and empathy, shown most especially with how the Giant brings itself together through blue radio waves.
It's interesting how so much of Guillermo Del Toro's recent Pinocchio movie also seems to take from this, quite hilariously because Bird and Toro are friends it seems! On second pass, it makes me appreciate the more obvious Frankenstein and Christ-motifs that Bird used for this film.
It's especially cool how several films this year (and on netflix curiously...) have taken inspiration from The Iron Giant, such as Wendell and Wild (where they just straight up deal with the school-prison industrial pipeline) and My Father's Dragon, which is deceptively simple for how it critiques various aspects of the US's economic system and it's impact on the world and entire families.
Sort of depressing how such a great movie ends up not being financially successful. Maybe the suits were right about a dog sidekick or hiphop soundtrack (vomit).
I think a lot of it was that it just wasn't marketed properly.
This movie had probably the worst marketing, comparable only to disney's latest attempt at totally not being against gay people.

I wonder if you've read the book, because it honestly makes this movie 's story even more interesting. The Giant battles a massive alien monster who (like the movie Giant) was provoked by human warfare. Funny how they found a way to work around such a plotpoint.

I watched this movie the other day & had a thought...
Did the Iron Giant have brain damage & forget his mission? Like Goku?
When the Iron Giant crash lands on Earth, he dents his head. Then he gets electrocuted for a few minutes soon after & it is shown that he acts extremely childish & has to re-learn how to talk🤔
Also yeah, I didn’t realise the gravity of the nuke as a kid. I didn’t really realise it was any more powerful than a “regular” bomb, TNT, etc. So I knew the town would be wiped out, but I didn’t realise it was probably going to create a 100-mile radioactive crater.
Especially given the duck and cover song (which I still misremember as being real instead of that turtle one which inspired the sequence) overstated survival - only much later I learned that advice was pre-fallout discovery, only intended to avoid terrible burns from the strength of the wide-spectrum light (radio, heat, gamma rays, etc) in the distance; not an actual direct hit.
I watched this near the start of lockdown and as an adult I went “oh shit, a nuke???”.
I absolutely loved how slimy Mansley was, especially the ending he had. As a kid I always knew he was a coward, but a lot of the rest went over my head. Plus how he’s actually pretty low-ranking where he’s stationed, so his power-trip in town makes a ton more sense in that context too. My favourite line as an adult was about how he believes big things only happen in “big” places, then he proceeds to list a ton of major cities as if Hogarth would care.
I appreciated the art guy being a beatnik way more as an adult too. 60s throwback fashion was so big in the late 90s early 00s that I barely even registered it was set in the past, so I thought the artist just had cool fashion too. But knowing a ton more about the history of the beat movement as an adult I really respected that choice.
