This is the first ever third party Nikon Z lens with autofocus, and the price is only $399 which is almost just half of the Nikon Z 85 1.8. But how is the image qualiy? and most importantly, does the autofocus work? Let's find out in this review.

I'm glad the third party offering with AF have started for the Z system!
yes a lot of Nikon users have been waiting for this to happen!
Great breakdown Richard! Found you in the Nikon Z group. Happy to support other Nikon RUclipsrs!
Thank you Colton! Merry Christmas
I really love the structure in the bokeh- it's my favourite type of bokeh- it's much more interesting than just blurring it out!
I hope nikon allows viltrox to continue and not lock them out with a firmware update
Nikon should actively support 3rd parties to port E mount lenses to the Z mount.
It'll eat into Nikon's pie. Nikon ain't having any of that
@@paldo771 I believe Nikon thinks the way you think. Hence, anyone who prefer variety of lens choices are forced to look elsewhere.
Since when will Nikon make 3rd party lenses stop working? That's literally not something they have ever mentioned.
Just purched this Viltrox 85mm 30 minutes ago. Within 4 days I will attached it to my Nikon Z50. Lets see how it will works. Nice video as always Rchard!
This lens is almost perfect (if it only was weather sealed). For the price and the fact that offers AF it's a no brainer to get it; looking forward to what they'll offer later.
thanks T D! i am testing their 23mm 1.4 Z (APSC) and 35 1.8 Z now :)
Great review with test and results explained clearly. Better than other 'pros' who gives silly comments without using the actual lens. A thousand thumbs up👍
Thank you so much 🥰
Thanks Richard for this first review of the first autofocus 3rd party Z lens. Looking forward for more as they are released.
Thanks for watching and I am also looking forward to more from viltrox and other brands too
I recently bought a 56mm Viltrox lens for my Fuji and it was on the way back to the shop within 5 mins: when turned, the aperture ring was scratching the case, so the quality assurance did not do their job. After that episode I am done with Viltrox. If you want to try it out, I recommend to order the lens from a shop where sending it back is not going to cost a fortune.
Always a good idea to buy from a good shop that allows returns and have good customer service. Sorry to hear your bad experience with your viltrox lens. But it could be just purely bad luck as even first party lenses have similar QA issues, I am talking about lenses that are 10 times more expensive than the viltrox. So maybe give them a second chance? my current experience with the viltrox lens is quite positive and I would even say they are one of the better new third party lens brand overall
@@TheRealRichardWong I will definitely be following their development, but I have been a member of several Facebook groups and issues people are reporting there are indicating problems which to me indicate both poor manufacturing and quality assurance. Aperture blades closing up very slowly: usually it is a sign of poor lubrication, camera hit by someone on a street and the lens broke into two pieces with one?
Very good review with great examples... loved it and am looking forward to the reviews of the other viltrox lenses that will be released soon
Thanks! 👍 yes i'm looking forward to more Z AF lenses from Viltrox as well!
Hi Richard, this video realy helps me dive into the Viltrox-lens collection for my Z6. Two things I missed in the video, and what for me is important, is how this lens performs in lowlight situations, and how fast the AF works with fast moving objects like running dogs and so. Did you test these things as well? Keep up the great work!
Glad it was helpful! Low light performance is good. However, i have not tried AF with fast moving objects so can't answer that. Normal speed like walking seems OK though
@@TheRealRichardWong Thx for your feedback. So if I understand your tutorial/review, this is a must have portraitlens when one is on a tighter budget?
I would say, if you don't have any portrait lens. But want one for your nikon Z.. I would either
1. get the Viltrox if you don't want to spend a lot or want a better value for money solution,.
2. Or else the nikon S 85 1.4 if you want the best and don't mind spending more
thanks so much for your review, it was very helpful and well done I might add. You covered all bases.
Thanks Ted
Thank you for this awesome review.
Can you do a comparison to the Z 85 1.8S if it's not a problem. I'd like to see side to side bokeh, sharpness and chromatic aberration differences.
Hi Stefan I do not have access to the z 85 at the moment but if I have one I would certainly do a comparison video :)
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for the reply, love your videos, have a good one.
You're a legend, Richard.
Thank you Taipei Geek!
Im grateful for this review 😊Nice job as always.
No probs! Glad you like the review Ivan :)
@@TheRealRichardWong this will make Sigma/Tamron and others, even Nikon to think twice when make lenses and put their prices. Nikon must put down their prices a lot. I think its overpriced for now ..
viltrox please bring out 100-400 or 28mm pancake lens
Hi mate. Cheers for this review. Great that you had introduced the video component in as well . It would be great if you could do a very short comparesing with the native 85.1.8 from Nikon. It would be interesting to see how much they're apart.
Thanks for the suggestion. If I get hold of the 85 1.8g I will do the test for sure!!
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks. I meant you to make an comparison between Viltrox 85 mm 1.8 to Nikon 85 mm 1.8 S not G. Thanks
Ah sorry ok will add that to my list too. But looking at the results from my previous 1.8s reviewI ,do think the 1.8s is a better lens with better corner shaprness, less CA etc
@@TheRealRichardWong I could imagine that Nikon 85 mm 1.8 s is better hence the price plus it's made by Nikon themselves. The question is .....Is Nikon twice as better than Viltrox?
@@andreiiasi haha it's hard to define "twice" better. but if you have time, check out my 85 1.8S review which i also compared with the 85 1.8g and 1.4g. i have a feeling the viltrox's overall performance would be quite similar to the 85 1.8g
I'm surprised, i waited much worse results. Looks like the first 3rd party lens for Z mount is very good for its price.
Yes I'm surprised too. Wasn't expecting Viltrox managed to get such good AF performance in their first Nikon Z lens
Thanks a lot! Looking forward to this lens!
Thank you for watching!
Only reason I hate 85 mm is the distance you need from subject … not for me . I bought the 50mm 1.2 in Hong Kong I’m in love ❤️. Thanks to your channel I actually loved the video test as well … I will use it for religious lesson
Great review! I'll purchase this lens as soon as will become available here in Italy! ;-)
Hopefully the wait is not that long, and enjoy!
i love that lens thanks !
hello Richard, thank you so much for this superb review! I think I am going to buy a Viltrox 85 Z lens.
But just another question to you: with which recorder or system do you record the viewfinder shots?
This might be so usefull for my own photocousres!
Thank you!
Hi Henk, I use a Atomos Ninja V to record it throught the HDMI output of the Z. It's really a great portable solution but it's not really a cheap device.
@@TheRealRichardWong OK thank you so much for your kind answer. I will dig into it! Have a nice day Richard!
I want 56mm f1.4 for Z50!
I have it and it is amazing!
Thanks for the video Richard! Is there a lens hood supplied with the lens? If so, is it plastic or metal?
Yes there is. Plastic and quite well made, clicks into the lens nicely
Thank you so much for this review! I’ve been waiting to purchase this lens until I heard from a good source about how well it works on Z cameras. One quick question though: can the focus ring be used to control aperture or ISO like my Nikon Z mount lenses? I wasn’t sure if Viltrox had been able to implement that feature
Hey Maxwell, I don't think it can. but actually, let me check it again and get back to you to confirm
I've just checked, and Viltrox HAS implemented the customisable focus ring feature! I can assign the focus ring to control settings like Exp Compensation, Aperture..etc and it works perfectly!
@@TheRealRichardWong thank you so much for checking on this for me! Now all I have to do is wait for it to arrive in the mail!
Unless it’s something very special or different then I wouldn’t go near a 3rd party lens from a small manufacturer. Nikon could pull the plug on this at any time, so I’ll wait until Sigma or Tamron get a license or whatever to make lenses for the Z mount, and if they don’t I’m more than happy using Nikon Z glass because it’s very good and not way over priced.
Those with Z7 probably will prefer the better optics of the S lenses but for casual users of a Z6, this is a very cost-effective first portrait lens. One of the key reasons to move to Z bodies is the excellent S lenses that have really marked a line in the sand for other makers to attempt to compete. F mount, any of them, show up weaknesses we were not bothered by before comparing images with native S lenses.
Hello richard, I want to know, Can In-camera correct vignetting? Thanks for review anyway.
Yes you can
Thanks a lot
Morning Richard, and Happy Holidays~
Heya zeapon! Merry Christmas 🎄
@@TheRealRichardWong 🎄🎁
Already bought in 2020 for Fujifilm 💁🏻♂️
Thanks for your video. May I have a question, we still need the FTZ from Nikon Z 7.
Not with this lens as this has native Z Mount
Thank Wong. Happy New Year
I hope you see my comment! How well is the autofocus when recording videos? I create makeup videos and I’ve been considering purchasing this lens.
i didn't do any super demanding test, just the normal face tracking shot and it worked reasonably well.
@@TheRealRichardWong Thank you for your response!
This was very useful.
Thank you for this clear, perceptive, concise and comprehensive review. Very well done.
Finally a 3rd party lens. That'll get the prices to a competitive level. Now they just need to make wide angle variants like the 20mm 1.8.
They have one in manual mode already. Would be interesting to see what other variants they will release
yes after testing this lens, i definitely looking forward to see Viltrox releasing more AF lenses for Nikon Z!
No, 58mm lens for Nikon Z available at Viltrox.
Hi Richard. Thanks for the informative video, as always. Could you tell me, does this lens react to the autofocus speed setting in video mode?
Yes it does
I want to see this go against the 1.8g. I want to see what lens is better cuz im looking to buy a new lens
It is not inconvenient but convenient to update the firmware.
What about stabilization? Vr matrix working? 3-axis or 5-axis? using FTZ working 3-axis, 5-axis only with native Z-lenses
Sorry can't really test it.
Hi Richard, great video, just a bit confused regarding the focusing with this lens. If there are no buttons of sliders to change from auto to manual focus why would you need a focus ring? Does it not have a manual focus option or am I missing something?
hey Ron, you could still manual focus even if there is no AF/MF switch on the lens. You don't even need to switch to MF mode on camera.
Or, you can customise the focus ring to control something else, like exposure compensation.
Well well well.. what are your thoughts about this Viltrox AF 85 f/1.8 Z lens?
It’s a good beginning!
and its good, lenses in this period they are good, there will be always little things.
“2021-2022 will be lenses year’s”😋😋”
I got mind yesterday I’m extremely impressed so far. Hope they release a 20mm,35mm.
@@KBTIMAGES How is the focus working in comparison with z lens if you have? I have a 35mm s and I think about getting a 85mm.
How it compared with Nikon Z 85mm?
thanks for share. i have a question.this lens have weather seal or not?
No it doesn't 🙂
Richard are the medium size Z7 raw files (25mp) equivalent in quality to the full size Z6 raw files.
PS the lens doesn't seem to be on their site.
Hey Mark, not too sure about medium size z7ii raw and unfortunately just returned the camera back to nikon so can't test it. The lens will be listed on their store soon I was told as there is a bit of delay
Good review. I will try this lens soon.
What about lumix s5? Do u use it also for photos? I used it for a few weeks but I send it back. The viewfinder was bad
Yes I use the s5 for photos and videos both. The evf is not very high res or large, but I found it ok. Better than my A7III quite a bit even specs almost the same
@@TheRealRichardWong I see, cause I use often the Z6 and it has a good evf..... but unfortubetly I had probs with the one of S5 :-(
Looks pretty good
thank you for watching Aditya
Thanks for the review, and how it is compare the quality image against the 85mm 1.8G with the adapter ???
I haven't done side by side comparison..but you can check my Nikon z 85 1.8 s review to get some idea about the performance of the nikon afs 85 1.8g
Im debating the same thing: should I get the viltrox or adapt an 85mm F1.8g lens. Did you make a purchase or did you find an answer to this question?
Does the Nikon focus speed works in this lens while making video?
Hi Richard, does this lens activate the camera's 5 axis image stabilization or just 3 axis?
I would guess it is 5 axis as it is a native z mount lens? But I can't really confirm that
You Rock Richard 💪
Thank you very much!
Actually i dont like buying autofocus lens from 3rd party. I love shooting with manual focus lens. Best quality for same price, usually build like tank, and why would i use autofocus? Speed? If its speed ill just use my iphone 13 pm, 11 and soon 15 pro ultra lol
If you had to, would you pay the extra 2-300 for the NikonS or go with this one?
It really depends... If it is a lens that I use a lot... I would save up for the nikon s because that lens is really phenomenal. But if it's a focal length that I would use but only occasionally, then the viltrox is really good enough at a friction of price.
Where can I get your shirt? Love it
here you go: teespring.com/f-0-95?tsmac=store&tsmic=photographer-need-this&pid=46&cid=2742 :)
Portrait sharpness and boken F1,8 better Yongnuo 85z or viltrox 85z? Thanks
hi Stefano, i'm sorry you may have to check my both reviews and compare them as i haven't done a direct comparison of these two lenses
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for the answer. Between the two you advise me?
They are very similar to be honest.
"super easy, barely an inconvenience" 😂😂😂
i'm surprised no one else noticed that! Opps...
@@TheRealRichardWong good joke though
What about sound of AF? Is it Silence on video?
Very quiet. You should not be able to hear any af noise unless you are filming in a super quiet indoor set
hi richard i don't see 85 lens for nikon z in store.
Not yet. But it will be available very soon
so im guessing this one beats the samyang 85mm z lens right?
The Samyang doesn't have autofocus
Filter ?
Cannot find this on their website @Richard Wong :( really want this lens too. Even with your 10% discount
Let me check with viltrox and get back to you soon
@@TheRealRichardWong Cheers matey, thank you
Viltrox told me they are having some delays, so might need to wait until after Chinese New Year period, which means late Feb?
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for the reply, appreciated.

Do they have 20mm autofocus for z mount?
No, not yet at least. This is the only af lens they have released for nikon so far.
If I buy a Z camera then I want lenses designed to take full advantage of the wide shallow Z mount. That means Nikon only right now.
Does it respond to af speed setting change in video?
Yes it appears to be!
Can it use for macro? What ratio? Thanks
No it's not really a macro lens
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks
Your affiliate link is no longer working. Can you fix it?
hi Wayne, for some reason, Viltrox still has not released the Nikon version of this 85 lens on their website yet. But they told me it should be very soon. So the link currently only points to their webstore (and you can get 10% off anything there, or you can use my code RICHARDWONG ). but I'll update the link once the lens is also listed there. Thank you
So do you think its worth selling my 85 1.8g for this puppy?
Do you do video? And do you need continuous autofocus?
@@TheRealRichardWong dont care much for video and the continuous focus is something I'd like to have improved since my z6 + ftz 85 1.8g sucks at continuous focus. Is the image quality any worse or better? That you've noticed?
I feel it's similar, probably slightly better overall especially in terms of CA. But I didn't have a chance to do side by side comparison
@@TheRealRichardWong awesome, thanks for taking the time to reply. Have a great day!
8:04 Color Fringing and Veiling at the Center at f2.8? i get this is a very high contrast scene, but the OEM lens does not exhibit this CA at all even wide-open (if it's there it's not visible even at high magnification). the Viltrox CA is significant enough that it affects the overall contrast of the image as well. not worth the price difference in my opinion. I would bet the likes of Sigma and Tamron (if they come out with a competing lens in native Z mount) will do a better job. For me this is not an alternative to the Nikon lens.
These lens have stopped working for alot of people after a few outtings, just a warning to anyone who's going to buy it, don't be like Me and few others who are now stuck with a £350 paper weight
Glad it has no aperture ring
why is it Jon?
I hope in next 2 years Villtrox won't become a pumpkin.
What does that mean? 😅
@@TheRealRichardWong it means, after a few software updates Nikkon won't support Villtrox lenses.
Oh right but Nikon never really support viltrox or any third party lenses . It's the reverse engineering by third party to make them work. Viltrox is pretty good at fw update I feel so if Nikon's new body has some changes.. there is a good chance viltrox will update their fw
@@TheRealRichardWong but Nikon can easy block Viltrox AF for example.
I don‘t see any reason to buy this lens instead of the Nikon Z-Mount 85 f/1.8. I think a 1.4 version would have made more sense
The reason: it's US$ 300.00 cheaper.
@@silviofernandes5296 yep that would be the reason.
