Nicely done, Chris. Good value for money, and I'm delighted to see Viltrox start to produce some RF mount lenses.
During your discussion of the lens' compatibility with RF cameras' in-body lens correction, I noticed that the camera identified the lens as an EF 85mm F/1.8 lens. I think that's the secret. Viltrox already make an EF/RF mount adapter. All they had to do was design an EF mount lens and meld it with their EF/RF adapter, which the base of this lens strongly resembles. Brilliant solution when you think about it.
Noticed this as well. the Lens works great with my EOS R. I also had updated the lens firmware version.
They have indeed been very sneaky / clever :-)
@@christopherfrost I wonder if they'll get a cease and desist like Samyang did for their 85 1.4

Buyers should be able to use other options.
Honestly, you're just the most amazing reviewer. Always trusted your opinion and never been disappointed!
I got one last week. It is very nice and sharp at middle apertures. Excellent bokeh and focuses accurately. Excellent finish. Wide open could be sharper, but good for portraits and elements are well centered. I should compare with EF 85mm F1.8. Close focus is as sharp as 50mm f1.2 RF at near distance at f5.6.
What about the noise of the autofocus in videomode? Is it loud? Thank you.
Thanks for this review! After watching it the first time, I decided to add it to my new R6 kit and am really thrilled with it. I mostly photograph my children and grandchildren and it's exactly what I want for portraits.
Canon has forced Viltrox to stop producing third party RF lens, so if u want this lens buy it before it solds out
Canon needs to release a RF 85mm with at least 1.8, I feel like a lot of people bought the Viltrox RF 1.8 over the RF f2 because it’s an f2😭
It would be great to compare this with the other 3rd party 85mm lens that you've reviewed before, the Rokinon/Samyang 85mm RF 1.4 AF.
There are some questions about the samyang/rokinon lens. It has been removed from Samyang website and it seems they are stopping production. Rokinon website still shows it, but points to samyang for firmware updates, which is important since several canon firmwares have broken the AF of the samyangs.
@@Simon-eh5ez As far as I know, Samyang gave up producing rf af lenses because of licensing issues from Canon. I think Canon is going to kill all third parties AF lenses. I am not sure that whether Viltrox will just ignore Canon’s suing.
@@lindenbaum9448 yeah, that's what i was referring to with my comment. there's nothing pointing to there being any lawsuits though as far as i know.
Interestingly enough, the viltrox no longer shows up as ef 85, it shows viltrox instead. Both in camera and Lightroom.
@@Simon-eh5ez you said : several canon firmware have broken the af of samyang, what do you mean by that?
@@romanpower7068 There has been issues when canon releases new firmware that made the AF performance much worse until Samyang released new lens firmware. Since they discontinued the lens there has been questions about the future firmware releases
I use this on my fuji x-t20, and it's absolutely amazing! Very versatile. I can even do astrophotography with it!
Ordered both this 85 1.8 and the yonguno 85 1.8 and I ended up sending back the viltrox relatively slow af and it just wasn't as sharp as the yonguno and for them being the same price it's a no brainer
Viltrox just released a firmware update. This lens along with the Samyang RF 85 are excellent value options! How about an updated comparison video?
I’m a bit late to the party, but will this work with current RF bodies? I mean, has Canon updated their bodies to reject these lenses? Thank you! Love the videos!
I had 2 Viltrox lenses for Fuji-film cameras, they are good when you nail focus, but I don’t find them very reliable. Chromatic aberration was very distracting. Absolutely fine for casual photography
I was waiting for this for quite some time now. Thank you very much for an awesome review as usual!
Amazing.....any lens I am curious about, you have the review. Well made reviews and thank you for the all the work and effort.
How does this lens compare to the Samyang AF 85mm 1.4 RF?
How would this fare against the Canon 85mm 1.8 USM as a budget alternative?
Great review as always! You've tested the Yongnuo YN 85mm f1.8 RF and now the Viltrox 85 RF. Which do you think is a better budget overall lens?
Would you recommend the Viltrox Rf f1.8 over the Samyang / Rokinon RF f1.4?
It would be no harm to shoot moving subjects in your reviews , since some reviewers didn't like the AF on this lens.
I know you highly recommend the sigma 50mm art 1.4 but I'd like to see it tested briefly again with the current sharpness test image. Also if you get the chance to review the Tamron 35-150 2.8-4.
I retested it a while ago on Sony E Mount :-)
I have an R5 and my Sigma EF 50 1.4 is still the sharpest lens I own.
@@christopherfrost And the Tamron 35-150? I have notifications turned on specifically for that lens.
@@DiminishingAugmentation I'll be testing the new one from mirrorless cameras when I can get my hands on a review sample
Whoever wants this lens buy it now because Viltrox has announced that they stop the sales of RF lenses.
Just picked up an Eos r so this will be my next lens for it. It looks cracking value for money.
I wonder how this compares to the yongnuo RF 85 f1.8?
Ohhhhh I’m getting one of these in soon. Super curious to see this
Would you recommend the Viltrox 85mm over the Yongnuo 85mm?
Interesting that Viltrox added an AF/MF switch on the RF mount of this lens. My Nikon Z mount version of this lens doesn't have a switch. Excellent review as always, thanks Chris
Great review! I have this lens for Fuji X mount...Love it! I already have the Samyang 85mm F1.4 for my EOS-R which also a great lens. I paid about $600 for that one.
I for know whether I should buy the Samyang or the Viltrox
thanks for the test, we are waiting for sony 24, 40, 50 2.8, your tests are the best on youtube
I just bought one of these in Nikon Z-Mount and so far I am pretty pleased with it. I was, however, surprised to see that your Canon one has an AF/MF override switch that the Nikon doesn't. Hardly an issue but interesting and I wondered if that was anything to do with OIS or not.
your video is great. but i'm still wondering which 85mm is better for me, canon rf 85mm f2 or this viltrox af 85mm f1.8.. help
Hi Chris... I am R6 shooter. As Canon has policy of not allowing 3rd party lens for the RF mount, what will be the impact of purchasing this Viltrox lens now for my R6? Will it still work seamlessly or whether the new firmware in R6 will make this lens not functioning? Thanks!
What is all that flickering during the autofocus test? looks terrible.
How does this lens compare to the Canon 85 f2?
with is Better than RF Samyang 85mm 1.4 MF??
I just got a copy last week and i instantly upgraded the firmware and it seems they changed something because it reports as VILTROX AF 85/1.8 RF, not EF 85.
It also happily does the full 12 fps on the R6, but i did notice some weird focusing issues instead, especially in servo mode.
i cant seem to find a RF mount one. they all say the mount is for sony. would it still fit a r6 mark2 with a sony mount?
What are the other viltrox products available for RS mount
0:39 "... on Canon RF mount, which is pretty starved for 3rd party lenses atm."
Damn! That hit like a freight train. 😣😭😭😭
Lovely interesting lense. I just dont like canons rf 85mm f2 having that annoyingly slow stm so im looking for an alternative.
This lense seems to not yet be released in switzerland, and with the crazy availability issues i dont expect it to show up on local markets anytime soon :-(
(Im waiting for over a year now for the rf 100-500 to be in stock again … )
Thanks for the video. In your opinion, how does it compare to the Samyang 85mm f1.4?
Thanks for the helpful review
Good value for money, I own the Yognuo RF 85mm 1.8 and I'd like to know if this Viltrox is better than the Yognuo or they get similar results ...
Hi Chris, thanks got the video. Do you need an adapter or does this fit right on the R5/R6 ? If so why is there no 3rd party lenses for Canon mirrorless from Tamron/Sigma.? I understood the mount was still locked to 3rd party lenses, thank you
Will this viltrox rf 85mm give good output when used with canon r10?
This is really good value for money!
I have the sony version (mark 2) of the lens and I love it. My #1 complaint with it, really my only complaint, is the infernal lens hood. I cannot comprehend how a company could manufacture a lens body as well constructed as this, and yet have a lens hood so terrible. It's damn near impossible to get on, and even getting it off takes a bit of effort.
Yup that’s the issue on my lens too (rf mount) I’m on a mission to look for an alternative hood that might fit it of better quality
Great video yet again Chris, one thing do you need to disable the Digital lens optimiser when using this lwns
Not sure why one would choose this over the Canon 85 rf f/2 at the current small price difference. The Canon has stabilization and superior image quality.
US $399 vs US $599 . . . that's enough of a price difference for many people, but I would personally go with the Canon.
Canon 85 2.0 cost 800 dollars in Ukraine. It's really strange. My choice is 85 1.8 AF
I just bought one for £280. The Canon f2 currently sells for £600 so it's double the cost
I have the nikon z mount version and it died after 4-5mo of very inconsistent use. Only reply from viltrox was amazon is "grey market" and I should update the firmware....on a lens that does not get recognized via usb or do anything when put on a camera. So, guess im just out $500
How does this compare to the Yongnuo 85?
02:25 The Problem is fixed with the available 1.0.7 Firmware
Very helpful as ever. Would this work well for astrophotography do you think? Thanks, Des
For the price it’s good, but the Rokinon is a better option, but I wouldn’t say by leaps and bounds though.
I'm assuming this is the same for the Nikon z systems as well.
I've been looking for review on this unit over the past week. I've ordered the Canon rp n been thinking abt getting either this 1 or the Canon rf 85mm f2 or the rokinon /samyang rf F1.8 but want something that ll last
Love that lens on XF mount :)
Question.. is the lense compatible with the canon m50? I do have the EF EOS R adapter
No
Viltrox has inconsistent quality control. Make sure your retailer has a favorable returns policy, and test the lens thoroughly when it arrives.
0:42 u said pergear company?
Sounds like you got cold. Get well soon :)
I bought a used for $115 it's been shipped cant wait to see how it is. You think it's worth $115?
Wow you got lucky, I paid $295 for mine but I’m happy with it
great videos brother. God bless
A Yongnuo rf 85 mm vs viltrox rf 85 mm
Pleaseeeeeeee
This is one of the reasons that I am planning to upgrade to r6. Until Canon denied third party manufacturers from producing AF lenses for the RF mount.
Plz review 7artisans 50mm f0.95
Viltrox 50mm f1.8 for Sony fullframe please 😊
So, we're seeing RF lenses from Viltrox and Samyang, but we're not seeing any RF Sigma or Tamron lenses.
Tamron is a "Sony owned" company
The Japanese companies would rather not break the law. Chinese companies don't care about patent or trademark infringement, since the only law there is the Chinese Communist Party.
Can you do the nikon version of this lens please
How does it compare against canon ef 85mm f1.8?
Its much better
Way sharper especially wide open at 1.8, better colors too. I traded in my EF 85mm for this in order to not get Ef-rf adapter and it’s much sharper, less chromatic aberration (still there) but noticeable improvement over old EF model, the lens hood is not great though
1:54 That ain't focus breathing. That's focus asthma! 😂
Shame on Sigma and Tamron.
The Japanese companies would rather not break the law. Chinese companies don't care about patent or trademark infringement, since the only law there is the Chinese Communist Party.
Can you please start testing lenses that people actually use. Rokinon and Tamron have released tons of good lenses in the last little bit
Wait they invented a Nikon lens for Canon? STM ED IF RF??
Only Nikon can invent such convoluted, meaningless, complicated and confusing names.
I wonder how long it would take for Canon to sue it out of existence
Have they done such a thing before?
@@debangarajchoudhury1409 Samyang tried to make RF mount lenses for a while, and then they all vanished suddenly.
Don't know about you but I've personally never heard of a chinese company getting successfully sued for copyright/IP infringement cases.
That happened because of logistic issues (according to what I heard from some shops), there is no prove that Canon sued them, in fact the Rokinon brand still has the RF lens on their catalogue and on sale in North America.
I think the after-market lenses are an enormous benefit to camera companies. They make it more likely to buy their camera. And if Canon/Nikon/Sony/etc. make a great lens for that mount, people will buy that too. The lame lenses made by the manufacturers tend to be kit lenses that are throw-ins when they sell the cameras. People are not going to scramble and buy those anyway. For instance, I have Sigma lenses for my Canon M3, and I plan to buy the Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM lens because it is worthy. And even if they do not like it, competition with the really good after-market lens companies like Sigma, Venus, Samyang (and even Tamron today) will necessarily spur them on to develop better lenses. Canon, Nikon and Sony do not need to fear the after-market companies. They already know how to build a great lens.
Mr. Chis, I like the way you test lenses, BUT... your videos lacking so many great factors that greatly affect the lenses results... to be honest with you, I have seen great lenses with amazing results but have no scores in your reviews .. have you ever heard about micro contrast and its effects??!!! .. some lenses give a live pictures and images almost 3D look... great colors separation and tonality with amazing micro contrast ETC... .. unfortunately, you take it in a very simple armature naive way ...please think about what I mean, and try to improve your knowledge so your followers will not get mis-leaded ... THANK YOU ...
How about comparing with Yongnuo 85mm F1.8?
