Technically, Vantais had attacked Ienzo by purposely sending unversed to attack the little boy during BBS. I’d like to think that before then came to save him, the unversed attacked Ienzo and he learned of its scent when they got pretty close.
Cut to Recom when Riku gained the ability. As you notice, DarkRiku and Vanitas share similar outfits. While Vantias has his helmet… and really puts the whole mask in their face to hinder scents into perspective. but not only do, I think the Hula skirt outfits represent darkness in general, but a special class of darkness. And one of their abilities, involve sensing/smelling darkness.
Sure this could all just be out of whack but it’s funny how one line could make you go spiral like this

I hope to see Vanitas as Sora's Arch-Rival in KH4. Just like Riku in KH1, Roxas in KH2 and Young Xehanort in KH3. Vanitas has the potential to be a great Evil-Counterpart Rival for Sora.
