Another one you should have added was Matt Patricia; this dude literally turned a playoff team into a losing record in record time. If you want a laugh you should search Bill Peterson, head coach of the Houston Oilers in the early 1970s. He had some very Yogi Berra-like quotes such as “line up alphabetically by height” and “pair up in groups of three then line up in a circle”, and it was painfully obvious that whether it was on purpose or not, he was not very respected at all by his players. He only lasted one and a half seasons and went 1-18 😂
Jackson's replacement Freddie Kitchens was awful too. The Browns were picked by some as Super Bowl contenders after he was hired but ended up with a 5-11 team and was fired after one season. He had the same number of wins as Gregg Williams a year earlier but Williams was only head coach for half the season. Petrino was so bad he makes Mike Smith look like he deserved those Coach of the Year awards. And he's still pulling his shenanigans, as he accepted a coordinator job at UNLV recently, only to take another coordinator job at Texas A&M days later without ever being part of a game for UNLV. I've been watching the 1990 season and I'll offer a counter for Rod Rust. Remember, the Patriots were not a great team coming into the season. Their QB, Steve Grogan, was entering his last season and his body was beat to shit, which immediately hurt their offense. Their defense was rock solid though. The defense proved their worth in Week 1 because they forced Miami to turn the ball over 4 times (3 Marino picks and a Sammie Smith fumble)......the Pats made one stupid play all game and it cost them (they tried a fake FG and fucked up). That game was closer than you think and the Dolphins got fucking lucky to win that game. Your point about them beating the Colts in Week 2 doesn't work either. Yes, they had Jeff George but he was a rookie. He played well in Week 1 against the Bills but he got knocked out of the game with a concussion, which was why they lost. The Pats defense basically embarrassed George with him throwing 4 picks. Yea they went 1-15 the next season but that has nothing to do with why the Pats beat the Colts (plus it lacks context of why the Colts went 1-15 next season......there were reasons). I also believe Rod Rust lost respect for the team after the Lisa Olsen incident......not just the other way around. That whole thing was an embarrassment for the Pats organization and they were the most hated team in the league.....they deserved to lose the rest of their games. It also didn't help that Grogan didn't play in Week 3 and would get knocked into retirement in Week 9 against the Eagles so the Pats had Marc Wilson at QB, who was an aging veteran that wasn't very good. The Pats offense sucked in 1990......their defense tried but with no help from the offense, they just couldn't stop teams (look no further than the rematch with Miami.......the Pats forced FIVE turnovers yet all they managed with those five turnovers was 3 points......and a very late TD to only score 10 points). I don't think anybody could have saved that Pats team......Rust was just the whipping boy.
After Hall of Famers Mike Shannahan and Tom Flores combined for 4 losing seasons and no playoff wins for 6 years Art Shell immediately turned the Raiders around, 7-5 when Shannahan fired then made AFC Championship Game 2nd year, with 5 winning seasons in 6 years, Al Davis said firing Shell was worst mistake he ever made, was 54-38, his QBs were Jay Schoeder (career 50.8% cmp%), infamous Todd Marinovich (2 yrs in NFL) and finally Jeff Hostetter in last 2 who made only Pro-Bowl under Shell (but was beast on his Nick Foles NYG SB run); AFC QBs were stacked with Elway, Kelly, Moon, Marino. Hue wasn't the reason the Raiders succeeded that season, if anything he was the problem and the catalyst to how they continued to fail at least until 2016, where Mr. Jackson went 1-15 coincidentally and they went 12-4. As someone who has spent crazy amounts of time studying the failures of the Hue Jackson era Browns the same failures were noticeable during his time as a Raider too, like his ego, the man threw his team under the bus occasionally like his Week 17 game, along with inspite of having talent like Carson Palmer, he went from 7-4 to 8-8, how did he even go 7-4 in the first place?
