That is T-SQUARE 54 at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. She flew 36 combat missions over Japan, and lost an engine due to flack. I polished the entire side in this picture with a car buffer ! This was in the old Boeing plant 2, which is no longer there. The 4 gun turret shown was the front, top, turret. I got to play with one of the 2 gun turrets mounted on a table. I was like a kid in a candy store !!! This gentleman in the picture was a retired Boeing engineer who got this system working again. Very nice man. I think he said there was something like 3 miles of wiring in this plane. It had been cut in places when the plane was shipped to Seattle from an old Air Force base, making it too expensive to restore the air craft. Tom Dawson was the project head, and was a wonderful person. This building was used to build B -17's, B-29'S, B-47'S, and B-52's. During WW II it had a fake village on top of the roof with houses, and street's, and a REAL COW that was tied up !!! It was a great experience. Never forget it !

My grandfather flew on them in the latter part of the war, and we'll into the 60s, not on the 29s anymore of course, but he helped found SAC, the Strategic Air Command. I wish I got to hear more of his stories before his passing, but he was somewhat involved with the SR-71 Blackbird program as well prior to his retirement in the 70s. 🇺🇲👍🏻😎👍🏻🇺🇲

This is exactly what my grandfather used to shut down the enemy in WWII. Hearing him tell stories of some of the B29s he was on that had been presumed destroyed in action multiple times yet returning alive, occasionally in flames, gave me great respect for life. He didn't talk a lot about it. He kept a journal though and it's locked away. Being born in '21 he lived in poverty until he joined the service. His fortune was making it back to the States alive where he learned many trades and he was always happy to lend a hand to anyone who asked for help. Unfortunately he's a dying breed because so many people nowadays feel they can go through life being entitled to something even though they didn't do a damn thing to earn it. RIP Papa.

The automatic fire control system didn't work fully during WWII. The Master Gunner had to manually assign turrets to gunsights. So, for example, if an attacking fighter passed from the left side to the right the Master Gunner could manually switch the turret from the left to right side sighting position. That was originally designed to work automatically as well as other functions. It was debugged by the time of the war in Korea and contrary to popular belief it was nearly suicidal for a MiG-15 pilot to attack a flight of 3x B-29 and later B-50.

A film was released in the 1950s called “GUNNERY IN THE B-29”, which demonstrated the same machine that controlled the gun. Moving the black controller and moving it anywhere would make it move, and for the triggers for firing would be the 2 buttons between the sight on the controller (glass panel in the middle). I have a slight fear that if you pull those triggers, the guns will go off.

Andrew Poss This is the T-Square, currently sitting outside the Museum of Flight in Seattle. This video was taken back when the museum's B-29, B-17 and Super Constellation were all hidden in the soon to be demolished Boeing Plant 2. More impressive for that era but less visible: the guns aren't directly aimed by the controls. The gunner is feeding range-to-target info via the controls, target relative velocity info by tracking it with the sights, and the fire control is calculating how much to lead the target by based on those. That's where the gun is aiming.
