  • In this lesson of the wing surfing school, the focus is on the learner's first rides. The instructor guides the learner through the mounting process from the upwind side, centered on their knees. They retrieve the sail with their back hand and bring it up high over their head, standing up. The learner is then instructed to step slowly towards the back of the board and slide the sail towards their back foot, turning upwind. They are guided to step forward, slide the sail slightly forward, and turn downwind. The backhand is released, and the sail is thrown over the front of the board. The learner pushes the nose under the sail.
The drill helps build muscle memory for riding upwind and downwind. It is emphasized that dropping the wing or struggling is normal, and learners should keep practicing. The next step involves mounting the board as covered in previous lessons, sailing forward, shuffling towards the nose of the board, and sliding the wing forward, causing the board to sail downwind. Shuffling back to the tail and sliding the wing back causes the board to stall out. Repeating this step in the opposite direction is encouraged.
The instructor introduces the technique of flapping the wing, closing and opening the sail for a bit of power, similar to how birds do. The learner is guided to perform gentle pumps with the back hand while stepping back to go upwind. Stepping forward and trying to go in a straight line is encouraged. The lesson emphasizes practicing going upwind, downwind, and across the wind in both directions, experimenting with stance, and finding balance.
Safety considerations are mentioned, such as the impact of wind and waves on speed and power in the sail. The importance of practicing in shallow water and being aware of the surroundings is emphasized.

I find it really difficult not to turn so far upwind that I lose power and stall. Even standing so far forward the nose of the board wants to submerge and holding the wing fully extended in front of me it will still twist upwind as much as downwind.
