An Alternative Water Source

When you are in the woods, it can sometimes be a challenge to find a water source. I wanted to share an alternative water source that I use on occasion in my area to get water off the landscape when other water sources are unavailable. I will use my Pathfinder Gear pre-filter bag to get the sediment out of the water and then process it through a Grayl Geopress in a quick demonstration. These simple pieces of gear are essential camping gear or kit for hiking. You could also boil the water (thermal disinfection) for an added layer of safety. Thank you for taking the time to tune in! Love my Grayl, though pricey. Went camping in a campground with a couple of fellows and the children of one of them. They had their Sawyer filters and getting their water from the spigot. Took the Grayl down to the lake, dipped it in, filtered and drank it. Their jaws about hit the ground. Told them that is what it was designed to do. I also now carry a Milbank bag to pre-filter the bigger stuff to save the Grayl. If in doubt it does not hurt to continue with your water treatment until you are comfortable.

Good tip. If you have a piece of property that doesn’t have a water source, do sum bush crafter build something to collect water over time. Like a pond or a plastic barrel to use for emergency?
I think at some point, we may invest in digging a pond. Right now I am not in charge of the property but it could be different in the future. Thank you for turning in and commenting!

Why not collect the dirty water in the Grayl plastic cup before pouring it into the milbank bag, that way you are not contaminating the steel cup.
It could definitely be done. I don’t worry too much about the steel cup because any thing I use it for will involve heating it which would cure any issues. Also, waterborne pathogens don’t last long once the cup drys. I see your point though for sure. Thank you for tuning in!

I have found that water like that really shortens the life span of the Grayl filter. I use water like that as an absolute last resort. I have had too many Grayl Filters clog up, even when prefiltering. I love the Grayl but I am cautious on when and how I use it. Thanks for the video and the tips.

I would want to go one step beyond and distil the water.

When I first started I thought a Grayl was "cheating". Then Inrealized that survival is cheating. Like fire making, there is no substitute to clean water and it should be taken and cleaned by any means necessary. My Grayl goes with me no matter what. I also carry a Milbank bag and aqua tabs. Every redundancy for clean water should be with you just like with fire making. Im glad I dont mind cheating anymore. 😂
I definitely agree. It’s like making fire with a bow drill with a Bic lighter in your pocket. It’s good to practice more challenging skills while having the ability to get it done immediately if the need arises. Thank you for turning in and commenting!
Hey Matt, I know this isn't your topic per se but what trees can you run a spile into to get water besides birch in the eastern woodland?
I know maple and sycamore will water in the right season because people tap them in spring for sap which is mostly water. I have also gotten water from the many wild muscadine vines that grow around. Many people refer to them as water vines. Thank you for turning in and commenting my friend!

the corporal did this already, do something different so we can watch and switch. if all you guys do the same thing, we'll just watch the first 1. Maybe u do the cooking and vegie discovering. Like Black hat is known for baking a turkey with herbs he found or a squrriel turns into biscuits and gravy.
I may have overlap with others because I may not have seen their video. I definitely hadn’t seen anyone talk about collecting water at the base of fallen trees but if they did, that’s cool. I am sure I will get some cooking in soon as well. Thanks for turning in!
