Can you still find OG LURES at Walmart? (surprising)

- Bassin' Buds and Retro alike love the walk throughs of local, privately owned tackle shops. But not everyone has a Jenson Tackle, Bacon's, Discount Fishing Tackle, or Phoenix Fishing Supply right around the corner. Everyone does live within a short drive of a Walmart, and fortunately, you can still find old school gold at your local big box store! This week we hit a Walmart in Texas and discover some "discontinued" Cotton Cordell lures like the CC Shad and the Grapler Shad, as well as OG offerings from Fred Arbogast, Heddon, Rebel, Mann's, and Creme Worms. Even if the only tackle shop you can find is a Walmart, you can still fish it old school! Special thanks to Todd as Bassin 101 for the hot tip on the Walmart discount bin. I love your enthusiasm dude. For real. More people need to be this passionate over anything. It would make the world a much better place. You're willing to educate and still be educated.
Never stop.
Happy Saturday Retro Bassin ! Genius adventure to wal mart
You can find retro anywhere if you look hard enough!
Yes I remember them old toys 👍
Thanks for video, I will be checking my local wisconsin Walmart tonight
Any luck, Mike?
Love the channel, new subscriber here. I have a Walmart story of my own, though it happened when a lot of these OG lures were actually still considered new, lol. Around 1990ish I guess. went into a WM to grab something and of course had to swing by the fishing department while I was in there. As I'm standing in the aisle, two employees also enter the aisle and begin discussing the stock. Turns out one of them was a manager, and was telling the other employee that they were to receive a new shipment of tackle some time that week, so he wanted them to markdown things to clear space. I just became a fly on the wall as they talked. The one employee had the markdown gun in his hand loaded with stickers and had just been in a different department doing the same thing, the manager told him to use the same stickers. He began marking down things with 50 cent stickers. I remember it was on a Wednesday, because it was the day before I got paid (Thursdays) at my job as a plumber's helper. So I wasn't loaded with cash at the time. I talked to the employee, he said not to worry that he was sure they would mark down items again in a day or two. I asked him if I gave him my number, would he give me a call when they did and he said yes. Sure enough he called me that Friday (after I had gotten paid!!) and said that he was going to that department again in an hour, so I drove to the store and was waiting with a cart. Again, for 50 cents. I bought every 100 count bag of Power Worms, DD22 crankbaits, even more that I just can't remember, and even a Plano Phantom Pro tackle box (the large black ones). For 50 cents each. I am still using some of the lures, and still have some new in package with the stickers.
That tiny Rebel crankbait is called "Teeny-R". I'm old enough to remember when that bait came out - early to mid 1970's. A great stream bait especially in brown crawfish.
Thanks, Glenn!
Have picked up a bunch of Big-O cranks at Walmart in the last couple years and always have one tied on. My friends laugh at the thought of using a "cheap" crankbait. To many people equate the price of a lure with how good it is. They run true out of the pack and catch fish like crazy. I may be old school but but last I checked catching fish is kind of the point.
The Big-O is very underrated these days!
👊 amen
Awesome video !!
They were blasting old school tunes (Flock of Seagulls) when you were showing off the tackle box.
Ha! Wish they played some Whitesnake...
I love going to Walmart and buying inexpensive cotton Cordell luers 🔥🎣👍🏼
Luckly, my river small mouth love Big O's. I always empty out those bargain bins.
I bet they do!
Got almost all of the cotton's too..love the video
Yeah buddy!
I glad to see you have Christmas kit. I have not seen them my local Walmart
And I was there after Christmas...time to discount it!
@@RetroBassin some of those baits a classic.
I like cotton cordell crankbaits. Good stuff!!
I love me some Cotton!
Heading to Texas for Wrestlemania. Making a road trip of it with my son, coming from St. Pete. We will be hitting tackle shops along the way.
Jenson's, Bacon's, Jim's Rebait...go!
Great retro video
Thanks for tuning in!
fantastic! I wanna go wallmart.
CC coming your way!
Also use that FLT minnow as a surface bait...just like a wake bait. Just reel it in slow.
Hot tip!
I got a handful of these cotton cordell lures. That lil crank bait is a tiny wee r lol. They will catch fish in just about any water that has fish.
That Tiny Wee R looks like a great pond bait!
Some awesome classics
Classics, indeed!
One of my most productive lures in my early days was that Creme rigged worm/harness. But mine did not have the wire ahead of the worm that contained the spinner and beads. Mine, from about 1976, had monofilament ahead of the worm with a loop in the mono to tie to. It rode higher in the water and fell slower.
Now I need to go to Walmart. Lol
I have so many of those lures it's nuts
Now I have an urge to run to my local wallmart and see what they got
Next weekend’s video will have you running to Bass Pro LOL
@@RetroBassin I guesd I will just have to run to Bass Pro Shop in advance.
The wallymart near me in Belleville Ontario has a fishing section about 15feet, and all garbage, but then wallymart in Canada is the shit's now. Great video as always though.
Canadian Spoon video coming soon, good buddy,,.
I got my PB on a 12” ribbon tail (probably discontinued orange pumpkin chart tail) in Texas.
I love the ol' orange pumpkin color!
I like cream also the ultra lite frogs are cool .
I need to do an episode on the Rebel Ultra Lites!
Definitely gotta look at some Walmarts around and see if I can grab some of those bluegill color lures. It's definitely something I would probably use a bit.
That Walmart has an AWESOME fishing section !! Some Walmarts have a crappy fishing section 🤨🤨🤨our 2 local ones included 🙄🙄🙄
The wafer shad is the og version of the frittside.
Good call!
@@RetroBassin A little bit of history for you. David Fritts was known to be a Cordell fan as à kid. His favorite lures included the wafer shad, which he later modded to be the frittside.
I have the cream bait kits there 🔥🔥🎣 always Chancing fish at my local lake small ones but caching them I have that orange 🧡 bait
I wanted to say that Rebel was a FasTrac, but the lip is shorter, same body, different lip.
I have fould couple of old lures at Wal-Mart speaking of old school i found a robby the robot from the early 60's at Wal-Mart
I'd like to see that!
I caught my first bass on one of those bluegill big O's
It's a mean little bait!
@@RetroBassin they are
I use to crush bass on those crème worms as a kid. They were cheap and would last. I could catch a lot on one
Just a suggestion but I would like see a video on Hildabrant history I absolutely love the snagless sally I fished them back when I was 7 or 8 years old and still fish them today and you can still buy them today and I am 56 years old 🎣🎣
My buddy Ted Lincon swears by them! I definitely need to do a History Of…
I believe that a tad polly was a good sized plug. And the head of the bait acted as the bill. Made by Heddon
Great now I have to go to Walmart and check out all the stuff PS battle cat for the win
We could have a cool kids convention there!
You did not loose your cool card I remember that cartoon ..
None of the Walmart stores in South Florida are that organized. The fishing displays are the most underappreciated displays of the whole store. What a mess!
Sorry to hear that, Curt!
I think it’s called the tiny wee R
A few years back a snagged a dozen smithwick bo jacks in the pradco bargian box at walmart. Drove to 3 walmarts afterwards and found a few more for a total of 16 baits. You could tell by the paintjobs that they were reissues but i have yet to see them walmart again. Walmart also had some heddon tiny torpedos in oddball colors back then too. I guess pradco fires up the old molds on classic lures now and then. Keep up the good work! Great show!
I had no idea, but Todd from Bassin' 101 sent me in the right direction!
what do you mean reissues?
@@dirtlegchaser2424 They were made and painted by pradco in the 2000's many years after Smithwick stopped making them. Pradco bought out smithwick and sold them again reusing old stock blanks and hand cards, but they were painted by pradco and you can tell the difference. especially by the eyes which are stenciled on the new ones as opposed to hand painted on true smithwicks.
some of my favs lures iv got are the Cotton Cordell wafer shads. theyre very similar to Storm Thin Fins which i wasnt privy to prior. I got a few of the silver and blue and caught 1lb bass out of a 3ft creek with it
edit: yeah! 6:05!!
By the power of Grayskull. I have the power!!!!!!
I am Adam, prince of Eternia...
bass pro and cabelas have the creme scoundrels
Yes, I am always happy to see Creme on the peg!
@@RetroBassin I just ordered a ton to put on the shelf in acworth
Yeah retro I've been going into Walmart and buying those old school lures for a few years now I bought just about every color CC shad they have plus I got some of those big o lures
Sir, have you done any coverage on the Johnson Spincast reels like the Sabre 10 or similar? I considered them to be the premier spincasters for beginners because the drag system was in the handle instead of the spool rotation gears. This prevented ALL potential line twist due to the inexperienced folks cranking while the fish was pulling drag. They disappeared from shelves here in central New York State several years ago.
old school he-man, cool card +10 intellect.
I have the power, I guess.
I found some really cool lures under the shelves and in the bottom of those boxes I tried to scan them and the store said they don’t exist in there system
That huge tackle box looks neat! A dream gear when I was a kid. Great video. Thank you for sharing!
Loved the OG colors!
I'm fortunate to have a bunch of local tackle shops near me. Very cool you found some old school lures at Walmart. The Walmart closest to me has almost nothing for their fishing section. The one you were at puts it to shame. Another awesome video Chris!
I need to see those...or better yet, we need to catch a peacock on some OG lures...
@@RetroBassin Let’s go next time you are down this way!
I bought the fire tiger Chatruce Crank bait But it feels like it's made of Styrofoam not plastic anymore.
Masters of the Universe toys man that took me straight back to being 3 playing with this toys and listening to my dad's KISS records.
Man, we could have a cook kids convention!
Do you know the diving depth got the crd wafer shad I seen your video and lucked out and found 3 different colors. I appreciate your videos and would like your feedback. Thanks
Looks like she'd get down about 3 feet.
Walmart has every thing
Almost!
Love the retro idea! Yes I remember all those He man I owned every one of them including castle Grayskull and snake Mountain. Nothing like old school! 🙌
Oh, they've got a retro Grayskull out, too....
Walmart is an awful business the things they're doing here in Canada especially Montreal is unreal. Sorry brother couldn't hold that back lol love ya man!!!
I hear you brother, same crappy behavior in Belleville Ontario.
Agreed in Illinois. My Wife and I refuse to shop at China-mart. I do always scopeout the closeout/bargain bins at other stores for retro gold though.
You know me, I will shop mom and pop whenever I can!
@@RetroBassin I know brother! Just had to say it lol things are changing tho!! There's hope!! 🇨🇦🧄❤☮️
For $2.50 they’ll make good brush pile baits…after you put $3 worth of treble hooks on them. 😉
Hahaha
Some of those kits are Walmart only put-togethers. Even with the big box stores, the locally, privately owned shop is my go to. I worked at a family owned one for 36 years. Good video.
I totally agree, Steve. If there was a local shop, I woulda been there!
The Cordell spot you saw is not the same as they sell at your tackle shop
It is a cheaper version. How do I know ? I bought a couple they suck very cheap made for Walmart.
what was the issue with them?
I make it a point to hit Walmart once a week. Ya never know what you'll find...
I'll hit mom and pop when I can, but options were limited on this trip!
Im going to have to look for those at my local Walmart! Great video buddy!
Thanks for tuning, Mark, and good luck!
OG does that stand for old gangster because if you meant old school old in school is two words so it would be 0SG
Yes!
I got the Grappler in that brown back and orange body. I used to catch a lot of bass with a Lindy Shadling as ice would form on my rod tip. Theses Grapplers look almost exactly like the Lindy Shadling. I also fished crankbits with the above color pattern in bass tournaments, but always caught crappie. Imagine what these cranks could do in that color.
I like the CC Shad too! I fish from a canoe a fair amount so I usually only take 1-2 rods so throwing a crankbait on a spinning rod is a plus for me since I like to fish t-rigs on a med spinning rod too. Very versatile!
Definitely gonna throw it this spring!
If you're gonna loose a lure I rather it be one of these. You have no idea how it hurts to see a 3 hook Heddon rainbow minnow catch air and sink and realize it's not coming back...🎣😬
On the other hand...makes for a good cheap on the go box!
That's true, D! The vintage fun without the vintage risk!
Always Good! I am not big on Wal Mart, but next time I have to go there I will check out for bargins. I am a Pawn Shop junkie and always find good deals on Old school Rods, reels, and tackle or something I can"t live without. Many Thanks for the tips and Great Video!
Me too, but sometimes you gotta scratch that lure hunting itch however you can!
Going to a local tackle shop trying to find some lure retro or not
How did you make out?
Dig the Big O brownish crawfish lure a ton. I would buy 3 or 4 of those if found them. I like the Fancy Shad also. Very cool finds.
And that little crank bait is a super teeny wee-r by rebel! And I must say it kills fish in small ponds !
I bet it does!
Interesting show, never thought of looking there. I have some old G-Finish CC Shads. They are really good baits in certain sitiations.
Me either! Thanks, Todd at Bassin' 101!
I HAVE THE POWER!!!!!!!
My biggest largemouth ever was caught on a Walmart bargain bin lure. Old school discontinued watermelon seed lizard, I don't remember the brand name, it had little feelers all along the sides of it. $1 a pack.
I check out those boxes every time I see them at Walmart. I’ve picked up some really cool baits. They catch fish too.
And if you lose one, no big deal!
Since viewing this I've been on the hunt for these sets! Found at a walmart today (in canada) for 15$... will check em out again come clearance season!
I remember years ago my local Walmart at the time had several of the pradco bargain bin boxes and had each lure clearance priced at $0.06 a piece! Bought all of them. They still sell Creme worm stuff too.
0.06 cents!?!?!?
I bought one of those Flambeau's on clearance for 15 bucks a year or so ago. I could not pass it up at Wally world....great video. Growing up that was the only place I could get any tackle...
Great find!
They were all $1.50 at my local Walmart a couple years ago.
I bought every version of wee CC shad they had, and every Rebel Super Teeny Wee R.
The bottom rebel in that kit is either a Teeny wee R or Super Teeny Wee R.
Yeah, buddy!
Going to have to do a Walmart run now. Ha. Especially for some of those craw colors.
Any luck, Paul?
@@RetroBassin haven't been yet. Soon.
I ran so far away now that's old school song right there... I use cotton Cordell lures and they work great I've been catching bass left and right on them lures 😎👍💯🎣
It's like I paid them for the soundtrack!
@@RetroBassin in the right timing what are the odds of that 😎👍💯🎣
Yes, I almost hate to say it but Walmart is often a source for old school gold, depending on the time and location. When they have a sale going on you can get some great fishing gear for super cheap. Great episode!
Thanks, David! But you better watch this week's episode...
Great video I wish my Walmart had the pre rigged worms they do have the little it's the same thing hard Bates I bought them when I ride couldn't find a wee crawl and was very impressed it really is the same thing great video
Thanks for tuning in, Ben!
Good one! I like to check out those kits. Especially the Arbogast and Rebel top water lures.
Also available on Lurenet.
Good find! I haven’t been in a Walmart since 2020. I’m scouting out the Lake Charles tackle shops. Will let you know if I strike gold! Keep ‘em comin’ bruh!
The place this week is drivable for you as well!
I talked with the new Walmart buyer for fishing tackle. Nice guy. We'll be talking about Walmart and local tackle shops on a fire Lure Love Podcast. I suspect companies are making those classic lure packs specifically for Walmart.
Yes, I think they do!
Well stocked! Those Big-O’s are so good. Word of caution, I’ve bent out the split rings on light snags, may wanna upgrade them! Great video! 🔥
Yeah, I can bet the components aren't top-of-the-line.
I look through them every time I’m in WM. The boxes aren’t nearly that big in my area. That and the stores are not that clean and organized, LOL. Several years ago I bought all of the Wee CC Shad they had. Have about 20 left including the ones in my tackle boxes. I lost one to something sizable I hooked last fall. Was fishing with light gear and couldn’t turn it before it got to the rocks and cut my line. I haven’t seen any of the wee size for a while but still pick up some standard size CC Shad now and then. I usually customize them some. I did find a deep Rogue once. Wish I could find more in the bargain bin. I caught some bass on one of those Wafer Shad in blue foil (like the one at the end of the vid) last fall. It was the only one of two I’ve seen at any of the local WM’s. Should have grabbed the other one too. I still pick up some Creme Scoundrels from WM on occasion too but unfortunately no Mann’s in any WM’s here out West. Had no idea they were making MOTU stuff again. That brings back some memories. Still have my two originals. Thanks for the vid. PS, I sent you a PM on FB.
I lost all mine to the bedroom cleanses of the 1990s...
I've actually got some retro Cordell lures in my stash I bought from Walmart probably 20 plus years ago lol walmarts had a running agreement with rebel, rapala, creme and cotton Cordell for probably longer than I've been alive lol
If it's old it's gold!
@@RetroBassin I love old school lures. I grew up with alot of those lures. I can't remember all there names nut I recognize a lot when I see them. I actually started collecting vintage lures lately. Gotten a couple good deals off ebay😁
Damn!! Your Walmart fishing section makes ours look pretty pathetic up here in maine. Very cool video!👊🏻
Thanks, good buddy!
Our local Walmart doesn’t carry much fishing gear unfortunately. Once in awhile they’ll get some stuff in but not often
Hopefully, you've got a local tackle shop, Patrick!
@@RetroBassin not a good one unfortunately!!
Hey Chris. I got two of those boxes ya were lookin at. Got them online for 24 bucks. Also picked up my first umco too! Tight lines man
Nice lift!
Definitely didn’t lose your cool card with the Herman stuff lol I remember one Christmas my brother got and I got the castle grey skull kits he had skeletor and I got Herman both came with their battle cats lol
Wish I still had my Snake Mountain...
Retro, back two years ago I scored big at Walmart and bought 30 Cotton Cordell lip less crank baits for a $1.00 each.
That's $30 well spent!
@@RetroBassin they are awesome.
So the box that you found that said classic kits I found in my Walmart in the clearance section and every single thing in the box was marked to $1 so needless to say I took the whole box but you were correct! They were all about $10 retail I believe!
Wait...I left $1 lures kits on the shelf!? Noooooooooo!
@@RetroBassin well I got them in the clearance section and they were marked at $1 so if they weren’t mark down yours were still most likely at regular price
Don't feel bad bro..I lost my "cool card" a long time ago 🤣🤣🤣
Tha is for the hot lead on OG lures at Wally World!
Love ur energy bro
The wafer shad is garbage. Only one way to fish it…sloooooooowwwww!!! Any other way it rolls and swims off track. May work as a terrible jerk bait. Maybe I just can’t figure it out. Idk. But as of now, it’s a hard no for me.
