My father was a double bass player who had a distinguished career in symphony orchestras and teaching in music conservatoria. He contracted throat cancer thanks to his love of cigars. A side effect of chemo was that his throat and ear tissues swelled and he lost his hearing. At the time I was living in England (1990). We wrote a lot of letters back and forth. He wrote about hoping to be able to go back to listen to orchestral concerts if his hearing returned after chemo ceased. Always the optimist he wrote that if he didn't get his hearing back, "better deaf and alive than dead with good hearing." That has been my life motto ever since.
Re Gouache: I started painting with it about a year ago. I love it's matt finish and luminosity, especially using really high quality pigments like those in my Schminke Horadam paints. I had never painted with anything before; I was a fine art embroiderer and print maker. From my first paintings I was layering and glazing and doing all sorts of things you are supposed to "not be able" to do with gouache. My sister is an artist who was amazed at my first works. She has never been able to get a grip on gouache. She said: how did you do that? I told her and she said: you're not supposed to be able to do that with gouache. Guess I'm lucky that I "didn't know any better." There's a certain freedom in not knowing the rules and choosing a medium based on what you want to achieve. I then came to Alex's cemetery video and he was doing many of the things I had been doing instinctively. It gave me such a boost and I learned so much watching a master at work. I thought; ha!, I can do that! Doubters be damned!

Doing this draw along taught me so much! I honestly did my most thorough, ambitious gouache painting by following along, so thank you! It was the kick in the butt I needed.

Thanks to a donation from a very generous donor, we were able to purchase the equipment necessary for Lauryn and Alex to do draw alongs in traditional media!! That donation was all the difference in the world to us, and as you can see, is having high impact on the type of content we can produce! -Prof Lieu

@@artprof that is great. I knew it came from the raffle, but not that it was one donor... Fingers crossed for the future Medicis.

I'm drawing a background and was just feeling like giving up as it is so much work, when Deepti says "This is where I quit and go cry". I feel so much better now LOL.
