I worked in the tabletop department at Tiffany & Co. back in the 70's & 80s. Woman and men would come in to purchase the beautiful, china, crystal and silver to furnish their elegant homes. We used to call them the "carriage trade." An era long gone.
I love Mrs. Wrightsman’s style. While I in no way can attain the same level of antiques and decorative acquisitions like her, I’ve tried to emulate her style in my own home, so much so that my own brother walked into my home and asked, “What the hell is this a [vulgar F-word] museum. Despite his language, it made me proud!
I had a close friend whose family lived in a mansion. It absolutely felt like a museum. Every room perfectly decorated, huge living room that dwarfed the grand piano in the corner. The place scared me and I would get lost in it.
Jayne was a statuesque beauty, when she walked into a room, all heads turned male and female! It’s been said conversation briefly stopped awkwardly! Best dressed and very generous/helpful to Jackie in restoring the Whitehouse. They donated many fine pieces!
@chadkosakowski3327 I wonder what happened to all the White House furniture and decorative works after 1963. Did President Johnson and family live in it unchanged?
@@comealongcomealong4480 Lady Bird did make changes but was very slow and very limited in making them as not to disrespect Jackie’s. She tried to recruit some so Jackie’s decorator consults but very few responded or gave excuses as to why the could not assist.
Please do one on the houses designed by Paul Rudolf who was dean of architecture at Yale. Famous for designing Halston's 101 E63rd abode and the magnificent Bass House in Fort Worth, TX.
Yes please, the De Menil house in Texas, partly decorated by Charles James.😊😊. Allso please, do the Wrighhtsman house in Palm Beach, formerly owned by Mona Bismarck, and the homes of John Richardson who wrote 3 volume Picasso biiography. PS gossip is that Mr W was cultured but cruel.
Ms. Wrightsman's taste and decor is done with elan. Although I adore her style, I have difficulty with her social persona; more specifically, when Thomas Hoving's wife asked Ms. Wrightsman if she'd like to donate to Phoenix House, (a drug-rehabilitation center,) Jayne replied that she "didn't give to pauper institutions." Considering Jayne Wrightsman's social origins were vulgar, untidy, and humble, she certainly turned into an elitist snob.
Other than snagging a wealthy man, did this woman ever accomplish anything on her own? Certainly if one likes rococo/bordello decorating, she's your gal!
Some of the more valuable paneling in some of the rooms are on display in the Wrightsman rooms a the Metropolitan Museum in New York City, so you can now see them yourself!

floors excellent this place has some extraordinary pieces of art and furniture but overall hideous and pretentious as her costume was. Not as horrid as "babe" and bill paley in their 5th ave place Unbearable although lovely to see many astonishing pieces of art YUCK
That was a wonderful tribute! I never realized how generous they were with the White House refurbish. Thank you!

"You live in a museum!" is one of my favorite compliments.

I think of myself as a minimalist or close to it, but that is one nice apartment. It would be a pleasure to visit or even live there.

I couldn’t help but notice what appears to be the girl with the pearl earring in the background on the wall. Was that the original?
No. The original has been in The Hague since around 1902. It was once shown around the world in exhibitions but now is not loaned outside The Hague.
Wow, they owned a Vermeer!
The black and white photos of Jane and her husband in their* Plam Beach house, which has since been demolish.

I wonder how much of this ornate style still remains in the apartment today, or if whoever lives in it now tore it out.
