I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned this in the comment section, but the line "But today, your desk has a flower that would mean you're the bullies' prey, and all because of me" is referring to that the girl has died or is being told to kill herself, because in Japan leaving a flower on someone's desk means that person has passed away, but if you leave a flower on a living persons desk it is basically telling them to go die or kill themselves, for those who didn't know. I think this song is about the girl's friend being bullied to the point of killing herself and the girl feels terrible about it watching it happen and not doing anything to stop it, and/or feeling guilty for not being there for her and trying to stop her (maybe didn't realise she was going to kill herself). So now the girl wants to kill herself out of that guilt or because she really loved that girl since they are really close and can't live with the fact that someone that close has died. I apologise if the interpretation is wrong but just wanted to give my thoughts on it, thanks for reading :>

Instead of getting what she wanted, the girls friend is distressed by the bullying to the point she jumps in front of a train… I interpret it as the story of a girl with overwhelmingly strong feelings for a friend, to the point she tried to manipulate her into becoming dependent on her. She only regrets her actions when she loses her friend, and is so grief stricken she longs to die in order to follow her into the afterlife. It is a young selfish love that was only going to hurt and sadly ended in tragedy. I hope you don’t think I’m shitting on your comment, again I think your interpretation is well supported by this translation of the song. I just thought it was interesting how a few choices of words can change the meaning of a sentence. It really highlights how difficult translation could be, especially translyrics. Cause I definitely think the singer is misguided but highly manipulative. She definitely regrets her actions but they were still really. Childish as you said. I translated it as “you look away, I won’t let it go” bc it had more flow to it but the original 僕だけを見ててよ (look ONLY at me) is very childish, along with the whole そう君が悪いんだよ (yeah that’s right, it’s all YOUR fault. I love this line for how it sounds like she’s really trying to convince herself she’s done nothing wrong.) My personal interpretation of the song is that the girl didn't directly bully her friend but did do things like leave the flower on her desk, and the sort of mob mentality took over the whole class. Like... She didn't need to do anything else after that happened, because the classmates saw who the next person to pick on was and they all went along with it regardless, if that makes sense. She also might have directly contributed to the bullying but the finger-pointing at the end symbolizing the Ghost Girl knew who caused her death makes me think that when she was alive, the other girl was playing nice to her... She was the cause of everything her friend went through but she played the loyal shoulder she could cry on as the bullying happened. To me it gives the finger-pointing at the end line a sort of shocking meaning, especially if you think the singer tried to die as well (my take) and join her lost love in the afterlife- like maybe she failed in her attempt and saw a ghost that said “hey I know what you did to me now” or she got there and realized she wasn’t forgiven. IDK going further in my interpretation of the song is that both of the girls, originally, were outcasts/loners of sorts who came together. And the singer was convinced if that her friend would abandon her for other people and acted rashly when she saw her making new friends as a result. 2人きりこのまま愛し合えるさ - when the two of us are alone together like this, that’s how we’re able to love one another). Kissing her drowning hand. I had fun translating that line because my intention with it was "I was placing kisses on your hand you waved above as you drowned, but clearly I didn't kiss them enough because you died anyway", if that makes sense. It was different from the original which is “as you drown I softly place a kiss on your hand”, so I did kinda add my own meaning here… But hopefully it wasn’t too out of line with anything the song was saying anyway. I wanted to have a lyric that rhymed subtly with “above” so it won out for me LOL Anyway I'm just putting my two cents in! From what I heard my theory was that these 2 girls were in love but because of that one of them was getting bullied by the other students while the other girl did not say anything to try and stop the other girls from bullying her gf. Powerful belting didn’t seem right but also I wasn’t sure if I could be as memorable if I head-voiced it either… So I did do a LOT of retakes and tried to get that breathy indie singer sound for this song. I’m glad you liked how it turned out bc it means my agonizing over this song stylistically was worth it! 😭

noo i had a dear friend, and i loved her a lot but i didnt know that i loved her until later. in 7-8th grade summer we spent a lot of time together and the song was just like that.. she was bullied in school and struggled a lot with depression and anxiety, but i could barely do anything because we had no shared classes and she wouldnt tell me who the bullies were cause she was scared for my sake. she struggled so much and barely told me any of it, even though i was obsessed with protecting her. i was so worried that she might end her life but i was so overwhelmed and desperate that i barely did anything except try to stay with her as often as possible. in that summer all i wanted was to be friends with her forever and always protect her, but then something happened and my parents made me stop being friends with her. i realized later that i had really loved her and i struggled for a long time because we couldnt be friends anymore. thankfully she is still here, but realized they're actually trans and a fair bit different from when we were best friends. i forgot how much i missed them. the cover is super beautiful and amazing!!

I lost someone a few years ago. About a week before he disappeared, he confessed to me and I turned him down. He was clearly suffering and I never reached out to him. The guilt of it never goes away, no matter how much therapy or medication I try. The memories of him are so vivid they still feel like they happened yesterday. Even now, it's like my mind just can't keep up with reality, it keeps telling me he's not really gone and I'll see him again at some point, even though it's been years. I can't comprehend the fact I can't send him a message asking if he's ok. I can't hug him tightly. I can't make fun of his bad taste in tv shows. The word 'never' just won't process in my mind. It just hurts too much to cope with, even though it's been such a long time.
i want you to know that you shouldn’t need to blame yourself. Whether it’s because you feel bad that you regeted them or that you feel like you need to apologize for your actions, you truly don’t. A romantic relationship wasnt going to immediately fix everything that was happening to him. you want to rewrite the past and try to save him, and maybe you could’ve - however, this is the present. life will always continue on, and it’s admirable for you to keep him in your mind’s eye, but you can’t dictate your life on someone else’s. all that we can hope for is that he is in a better place in the beyond, or at the very least he’s laid to a peaceful rest. coping is awful, i’ve recently lost someone close to me and it’s so difficult to think that i’ll never be able to hug her either, but we have to move on. they would want us to move on. i hope you all the best, antexe.

Thought it would be cool to give my own interpretation of the song! -There are two girls who are dating but have to keep their relationship hidden until they graduate -in some way their secret gets out and both start getting bullied by it (the ghost girl in particular) -the two girls don’t know how to stop the bullying without further worsening their relationship and end up falling out and decide to break up to stop the hate -this unfortunately makes it worse and the ghost girl ends up getting bullied even more, the vase of flowers on her desk, the nails, and drowning (a symbolism of depression) evident of this fact -the ghost girl feels bad that this all happens and decides to talk with her ex, thinking the best way for them to be together is to stand on the train tracks, the other girl is wary of the ex’s choice, deciding it wasn’t a good idea but instead promising to be by her side no matter what. -the next day or so the girl heads to class after summer break and finds out that her ex decided to actually go onto the train tracks, a vase of flowers now mourning her death. -the girl is overcome by grief and succumb into a deep depression, a few weeks later deciding to go onto the train tracks and reunite with the girl she loved so dearly.

ive got a thought on the song’s meaning, and that its two different thoughts - the first half being the girl who died, the second being the one who lived, but wished she didnt so she could be with her. She wished they could be together because the depression is “drowning” her to a point where she wants to die, so she’s trying to reach out to reach her beloved friend, and be with her.

Coming back to this, I think I’m obsessed with the line “drowning but waving that hand above, I couldn’t kiss it enough”. It just will not leave me alone. Like, the idea that the singer adored her friend but didn’t (and maybe couldn’t) help her the way she needed to be helped: kissing her hand when what she really needed was someone to pull her out of the water. The double meaning of self-destruction: people are often warned not to get too close to a drowning person because they’ll pull them under too, similar to how the singer kills herself because of her friend’s suicide. Just… that line is SO GOOD and I can’t stop thinking about it.

I just thought it was interesting how a few choices of words can change the meaning of a sentence. It really highlights how difficult translation could be, especially translyrics. I also wanted to share my own interpretation of the original as I’ve been obsessed with it for the past few days
@@yowassup6098 OH dang both of you have good comments! Actually it's interesting that my translation came off as more kind to you... Cause I definitely think the singer is misguided but highly manipulative. She definitely regrets her actions but they were still really. Childish as you said. I translated it as “you look away, I won’t let it go” bc it had more flow to it but the original 僕だけを見ててよ (look ONLY at me) is very childish, along with the whole そう君が悪いんだよ (yeah that’s right, it’s all YOUR fault. I love this line for how it sounds like she’s really trying to convince herself she’s done nothing wrong.)
My personal interpretation of the song is that the girl didn't directly bully her friend but did do things like leave the flower on her desk, and the sort of mob mentality took over the whole class. Like... She didn't need to do anything else after that happened, because the classmates saw who the next person to pick on was and they all went along with it regardless, if that makes sense.
She also might have directly contributed to the bullying but the finger-pointing at the end symbolizing the Ghost Girl knew who caused her death makes me think that when she was alive, the other girl was playing nice to her... "Let me make it better now, let me save you from the hate I secretly caused." She was the cause of everything her friend went through but she played the loyal shoulder she could cry on as the bullying happened. To me it gives the finger-pointing at the end line a sort of shocking meaning, especially if you think the singer tried to die as well (my take) and join her lost love in the afterlife- like maybe she failed in her attempt and saw a ghost that said “hey I know what you did to me now” or she got there and realized she wasn’t forgiven.
IDK going further in my interpretation of the song is that both of the girls, originally, were outcasts/loners of sorts who came together. And the singer was convinced if that her friend would abandon her for other people and acted rashly when she saw her making new friends as a result. 2人きりこのまま愛し合えるさ - when the two of us are alone together like this, that’s how we’re able to love one another).
Kissing her drowning hand. I had fun translating that line because my intention with it was "I was placing kisses on your hand you waved above as you drowned, but clearly I didn't kiss them enough because you died anyway", if that makes sense. It was different from the original which is “as you drown I softly place a kiss on your hand”, so I did kinda add my own meaning here… But hopefully it wasn’t too out of line with anything the song was saying anyway. I wanted to have a lyric that rhymed subtly with “above” so it won out for me LOL

From what I heard my theory was that these 2 girls were in love but because of that one of them was getting bullied by the other students while the other girl did not say anything to try and stop the other girls from bullying her gf. Powerful belting didn’t seem right but also I wasn’t sure if I could be as memorable if I head-voiced it either… So I did do a LOT of retakes and tried to get that breathy indie singer sound for this song. i had a dear friend, and i loved her a lot but i didnt know that i loved her until later. in 7-8th grade summer we spent a lot of time together and the song was just like that.. she was bullied in school and struggled a lot with depression and anxiety, but i could barely do anything because we had no shared classes and she wouldnt tell me who the bullies were cause she was scared for my sake. she struggled so much and barely told me any of it, even though i was obsessed with protecting her. i was so worried that she might end her life but i was so overwhelmed and desperate that i barely did anything except try to stay with her as often as possible. in that summer all i wanted was to be friends with her forever and always protect her, but then something happened and my parents made me stop being friends with her. i realized later that i had really loved her and i struggled for a long time because we couldnt be friends anymore. thankfully she is still here, but realized they're actually trans and a fair bit different from when we were best friends. i forgot how much i missed them.

I lost someone a few years ago. About a week before he disappeared, he confessed to me and I turned him down. He was clearly suffering and I never reached out to him. The guilt of it never goes away, no matter how much therapy or medication I try. The memories of him are so vivid they still feel like they happened yesterday. Even now, it's like my mind just can't keep up with reality, it keeps telling me he's not really gone and I'll see him again at some point, even though it's been years. I can't comprehend the fact I can't send him a message asking if he's ok. I can't hug him tightly. I can't make fun of his bad taste in tv shows. The word 'never' just won't process in my mind. It just hurts too much to cope with, even though it's been such a long time.
i want you to know that you shouldn’t need to blame yourself. Whether it’s because you feel bad that you regeted them or that you feel like you need to apologize for your actions, you truly don’t. A romantic relationship wasnt going to immediately fix everything that was happening to him. you want to rewrite the past and try to save him, and maybe you could’ve - however, this is the present. life will always continue on, and it’s admirable for you to keep him in your mind’s eye, but you can’t dictate your life on someone else’s. all that we can hope for is that he is in a better place in the beyond, or at the very least he’s laid to a peaceful rest. coping is awful, i’ve recently lost someone close to me and it’s so difficult to think that i’ll never be able to hug her either, but we have to move on. they would want us to move on. i hope you all the best, antexe.

Thought it would be cool to give my own interpretation of the song!
-There are two girls who are dating but have to keep their relationship hidden until they graduate
-in some way their secret gets out and both start getting bullied by it (the ghost girl in particular)
-the two girls don’t know how to stop the bullying without further worsening their relationship and end up falling out and decide to break up to stop the hate
-this unfortunately makes it worse and the ghost girl ends up getting bullied even more, the vase of flowers on her desk, the nails, and drowning (a symbolism of depression) evident of this fact
-the ghost
girl feels bad that this all happens and decides to talk with her ex, thinking the best way for them to be together is to stand on the train tracks, the other girl is wary of the ex’s choice, deciding it wasn’t a good idea but instead promising to be by her side no matter what.
-the next day or so the girl heads to class after summer break and finds out that her ex decided to actually go onto the train tracks, a vase of flowers now mourning her death.
-the girl is overcome by grief and succumb into a deep depression, a few weeks later deciding to go onto the train tracks and reunite with the girl she loved so dearly.
The og japanese lyrics heavily imply that the girl singing is the one who started/encouraged the bullying, in secret from her friend, in order to have the girl depend on her more.

There's a girl that i really, really liked a few years ago. We've been good friends at the beginning, so different yet somehow close, and then suddenly we started dating. In secret, we've been hiding from everyone mostly because she was very scared someone'd find out and,, something bad will happen. But I was totally fine with it, I liked her a lot and even before we became friends I always admired her from afar. I was happy! And then it all ended. Her fears won. She said it all is "too unusual" and,, was gone. I know why she did that, I understand her, I don't even have too much feelings for her anymore, we become very distant and barely talk... ive got a thought on the song’s meaning, and that its two different thoughts - the first half being the girl who died, the second being the one who lived, but wished she didnt so she could be with her. She wished they could be together because the depression is “drowning” her to a point where she wants to die, so she’s trying to reach out to reach her beloved friend, and be with her.
I totally get what you mean when sometimes with songs we have to keep adjusting the volume. I read your description before starting the video, and I’ve listened to it on almost full volume with headphones, and I can honestly say I never had the itch to change the volume. Like, the idea that the singer adored her friend but didn’t (and maybe couldn’t) help her the way she needed to be helped: kissing her hand when what she really needed was someone to pull her out of the water. The double meaning of self-destruction: people are often warned not to get too close to a drowning person because they’ll pull them under too, similar to how the singer kills herself because of her friend’s suicide. Just… that line is SO GOOD and I can’t stop thinking about it.
