  • There is a reason why electrical utilities advise people to disconnect/unplug unneeded items during a power outage. One of the reasons is to help lower startup demand when power is restored. But there is another reason - in some cases, when power is restored, voltage at your outlets may not be within spec. Typically during restoration, it could be under spec as there is higher demand on the system. Or, it can be higher than spec - sometimes high enough to damage sensitive devices. In this video, I'll talk about a power outage which took place back in May 2020 on an unseasonably cold night. When the power was restored, the measured voltage on a 120V receptacle was 130V, which is out of spec. Why? Watch and learn about an important component of the power distribution system responsible for keeping voltages where they should be.
