  • Benne and Sheats explained the group roles members and group leaders play: task roles and group building and maintenance roles. These are also called social or interpersonal relationship roles.
    Typical task roles are the elaborator, oriented, coordinator, energizer, etc.
    Typical group building and maintenance roles are encourager, harmonizer, compromiser, gatekeeper, etc.

      These roles can be done by anybody in the group. Typically, the group leader will do many of these roles but they can be done by anybody.

    You are talking about personalities vs roles ... the group is charged with a task and people are involved to solve the issue. The Orienteer/Coordinator owns the resolution. All other "roles" ... serious??? I should be assigned the "encourager" role???? this makes no sense. Small groups are pulled in to provide specific tasks vs being a high-school person. This is crap.
