    My mom & I went to Fan Appreciation Day the final game of the regular season in 1988. When Roy Steele announced Jose Canseco in the starting lineup that day, the entire stadium drowned out Steele’s voice in cheers. It gave me chills, it was one of the most special moments I experienced at a baseball game.

    I remember this one very well. I was not a Red Sox fan to say the least, but from my dad I had inherited a tendency always to root for the team that had beaten my team in the previous "round." Boston had come out ahead of my Tigers in a very tough AL East race, and so I was pulling for them. By this point, I was mostly grateful that the Tigers hadn't been the ones to get annihilated by this Oakland club! Thanks for bringing back the memories, Dave, and for your usual great restoration.

    Red Sox were 14 1/2 games out of first place in the AL East at the All Star Break in ‘88. John McNamara is fired as manager and is replaced by Joe Morgan who leads the team to an amazing turnaround during the second half of the season to win the division.

    This is the last baseball game ever called by Gary Bender. He did ABC MLB in the 1987 and 1988 seasons.
    Known for football and basketball mainly, Gary in the beginning of his career did American Legion baseball games in the 1960s and Milwaukee Brewers games in the 1970s. After 12 years at CBS, he came back to baseball with ABC and did it for two years.
    Bender was replaced by another Gary.
    Gary Thorne of the Mets and White Sox was ABC’s #2 MLB announcer in 1989.

    • @BrianONEILL-qf2cs

      Reggie and ABC had a long-standing arrangement, going back to the 1976 ALCS, where Reggie served as a color commentator for the postseason, and even for a few non-baseball events('Superstars', and a college football game or two).
      The thing about this arrangement was, after 1976, Reggie's teams were in the playoffs 5 times in the next 6 years...and the two years he wasn't playing(1979 and '83), NBC had the rights to the playoffs, limiting Reggie to a pregame role on the World Series(later expanded to locker room interviews from 1983-85).
      Aside from '76 and '88,, Reggie also did color commentary for the playoffs in 1984(with Don Drysdale-apparently not a great fit-and Earl Weaver, for whom Reggie had played in '76). He did not do any other telecasts during 1988, whether by his or ABC's choice.

      @@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Gary Bender wrote that about Reggie Jackson in his 1994 autobiography "Call of the Game: What Really Goes on in the Broadcast Booth". The incident that Gary Bender was presumably referring to regarding Reggie Jackson throwing his headset off and storming out of the booth happened in-between the end of the bottom of the fifth inning and the start of the top of the sixth inning.

      @TMC1982Part2 4 месяца назад

      @@BrianONEILL-qf2cs Reggie Jackson also did the postgame interviews for ABC following Game 7 of the 1987 World Series. I don't exactly know why Reggie didn't become a full-time announcer for ABC in 1988, since that was the first year after he officially retired from playing. 1988 was also Joe Morgan's first year at ABC on the #2 announcing team. But during the regular season, Morgan only worked with Gary Bender as a duo while Al Michaels, Jim Palmer, and Tim McCarver formed the #1 announcing team.

    • @TMC1982Part2
      @TMC1982Part2 3 месяца назад

      Reggie Jackson also obviously, couldn't participate in ABC's postseason coverage in 1986 since his team at the time, the California Angels were competing in the ALCS against the Boston Red Sox. So, for the 1986 ALCS, ABC used a two man booth comprised of Al Michaels and Jim Palmer with Don Drysdale doing pre and post game interviews while for the NLCS, ABC also used a two man booth comprised of Keith Jackson and Tim McCarver.

    The Coliseum was a great baseball park before they built Mount Davis. The A's were top three in attendance most years in the late 80s, early 90s. Once the stadium was remodeled in 95 or so, and the Giants moved to Pac Bell, attendance plummeted, even in the Moneyball years.

    Another classic sir! Thanks again for these historical games and players. I have loved Baseball my entire life. I remember getting Topps Baseball cards in the mid 70's at the Gas stations, Drug Stores, etc. The 70's and 80's had some amazing players and as I've previously mentioned before, I was so lucky to have been able to see them play live. As I also mentioned I was not a big fan of the Yankees. Back then they were my Milwaukee Brewers biggest hurdle to the post-season. However there were a few teams I liked. The Oakland A's were one of them. I loved to watch Ricky Henderson play. His speed was unbelievable, and everytime he got on base a steal was ALWAYS possible or probable. Back then I wasn't able to see the National League play as my team was in the American League, but I also liked the Montreal Expos, the Philadelphia Phillies, and various players like Steve Garvey, Mike Schmidt, Pete🌹Rose🌹, Darrell🍓Strawberry🍓, Dwight🩺"Doc"🩺Gooden, Gaylord Perry, Nolan Ryan, and so many others. The list of great players during the 70's and 80's in the MLB is too numerous to list. Of course I got to see some icons play the Brewers at 🏟Milwaukee🏟County🏟Stadium🏟. I've listed them too many times, but my point is that these players, these games, all have meaningful experiences and memories for people. Some may say but with 162 games plus playoffs, and the World Series, how can one game matter? Well for a Baseball fan who has loved the game, watched thousands and thousands of games on Television, and went to hundreds of games live, there are many many games that can and do spark memories. Both childhood and later memories. Going to the ballpark with Dad, Dad & Mom, or you and your buddy or buddies. Or even going to the game with your school for a field trip.(Which I loved until they said we had to leave at 4:00 whether the game was over or not, and it wasn't over.) See I never, or I never wanted to ever leave a game until it was over. Just in case I'd miss something. A miraculous comeback, or ??, with Baseball you never know. Thank you again sir for your dedication in keeping these classic games not only alive, but your skills have made it possible for future generations to be able to see games that their Father and even their Grandfather watched. That is something truly special. Thank you again and God Bless you.
