Thanks for commenting. I'd love for someone to do an arrangement with my lyrics for a funk/jazz band and some good singers. Would love to see Jaco honored better than I am able to here with no band. Know anybody that would be interested?
@kwuarmelite I always liked "Vocalese", the style of writing lyrics to instrumental solos. I listened to a lot of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross when I was a kid. The inspiration for this was the Phil Mattson arrangement of Manhattan Transfer's version of "Body and Soul", based on Coleman Hawkin's solo, featuring lyrics written by Eddie Jefferson in praise of Hawkin's playing. I like the idea of writing lyrics to a solo by a musician you love that are actually in praise of that musician. (Jaco).
Nice video. I believe that James Jamerson is the most influential bass player of all time though - considering that what Jaco did wouldn't have been possible without James. That said, they were both incredibly innovative and groundbreaking within their respective eras.
I understand you really are down with Weather Report so Im taking the opportunity to ask you about something: I saw a documentary recently and in one part Teen Town was playing in the background, but it wasnt the album version. Biggest difference was that the bassline was played with SLAP BASS. Do you have any idea of what version it might be?
@MrKeys57 Thank you for your kind observations. This song really blew my mind when I first heard it. Jaco influenced me so much. And after he died I wanted to write a tribute to him because he was so good.
Thanks for listening! No doubt, Jamerson influenced Jaco and was was one of the most influential bass players of all time, especially in the realm of Motown, R&B and pop. His bass lines were frequently "melodic" but Jaco elevated the FUNCTION of the bass to a whole new level by utilizing chords, harmonics and counterpoint. Both of their careers were cut too short, though.
wow!! really cool!! You need to make a good recording of this live, full band and all!!
