Do You Need An External Recorder?

  • I've seen this video requested a few times in the comments, so here it is! A comprehensive look at internal vs external recordings with the Canon C100 mark ii MP4 vs Atomos Ninja Inferno Prores LT files. As has also been requested, here is a Vimeo link to the footage used in this video (Vimeo has a lower level of compression that RUclips so it should it be much easier to see the differences): vimeo.com/user...
Whilst the C100 can only output an 8 bit signal, the Atomos does give you less chroma subsampling, and a much higher bit rate. If you're considering buying an external recorder for your C100 but you're not sure if it's worth it, then I hope this video will be helpful!
I should note that some of the files in this video come from my first recorder: an Atomos Ninja Blade 2. Although that has little impact on the video as whilst the monitoring aspects of the 2 recorders are very different, they both record prores in the same way.

The C100 mK1 and 2 is really dependent on the Lens. These cameras really like to use sharp lenses. If you use kit lenses use the STM versions.

Yes they do, I like using L lenses with them 👍

Rokinon CINE lenses also rock on the C100s. I use the STM and Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 😉

I had to do some green screen stuff recently and the c100 to the ninja v did help, not loads but it did. That tiny bit of extra colour data does make a tiny difference. The 420 to 422 that is.

Agreed. Using a 4:2:2 color space for green screening is key-able in a lot of cases. Lighting is equally as important. The value of the GS needs proper and even exposure for the time of day key you are pulling. If this is not an option you can always rotoscope and color correct and grade to match.

Hi thnx for the great review! I would have liked to see a shot of how you rig up your Atomos on. the c100

Really good analysis - I love my C100, but it's really showing it's age with the limitations of it's Codec. I've done my tests with external recording prores and haven't seen enough of a benefit for my shooting for the huge increase of file size. One of the things I love about the C100 is the very small, remarkably gradable files. I know when I upgrade to a C70 or C200 M2 I'll say "why did you wait so long to upgrade?" but for now, my C100 is paid for, and still a solid camera for my needs.

i love my c100 m2 so much, because it shoots so organic, looks not digital and thats more important for me then 8k :)))))))))

Is there a way to get 25/30i HDMI out of this camera using Ninja V for live-streaming below 25p / 50ifps?

I recently used the C100mkii as a B cam next to the C500. I have to say that for a 1080p resolution the C100 is defo got a place in todays world depending on the project. I shot with the flavour of proressHQ 4:2:2 and It cut extremely well with the C500 but certainly doesn't have the same sensor as I have heard other film makers say. It needed a little more financing within the colour and suffered much more in the low light. I would say that if you hit the exposures good with the c100, know you not going to go crazy on the 8bit grade, you can produce some very aesthetically pleasing shots. The internal recording for serious projects I wouldn't use apart from additional back up just in case.
Great video as always my man, its good to see your still using the C100 as its still an awesome camera. What is the next camera on your list of cameras you want to get? Will it still be a super 35mm or will it be in the full frame space?
Keep up the good work :)

i sold my atomos!!! AVCHD on this camera is easier to edit and lighter than a fake atomos 10 bit. an 8-bit camera cannot be converted to 10-bit, all nonsense. don't waste your money on atomos recorders. the 8 bit on this camera is not the same as in other cameras, the 8 bit on this camera feels like 10 bit, sounds funny, but it is. you can customize it very well with luts in davinci resolve

If you do any green screen then the higher bit rate 4:2:2 is useful

  • @dcouzin

At 4:45 "It isn't true 8-bit" was a verbal slip. Was it impossible to apply a sound edit to fix that? Otherwise apply a subtitle.
That aside, what is causing this 8-bit limitation? What HDMI signal does the C100 send out? If it sends out R'G'B' then it will unfortunately be 8-bit. But if the C100 has calculated Y'CbCr it can send 10-bit 4:2:2 via HDMI. Perhaps the C100 wasn't designed with external recording in mind, just external monitoring.
Another question: why did you choose ProRes Lite for your comparison? Even if the recorder receives 8-bit R'G'B', it is uncompressed, and if your goal is to extract the best Y'CbCr 4:2:2 signal possible from it, a less compressed flavor of ProRes might have shown greater differences with the 24 Mb/s MP4.

Hi. Really enjoyed your videos. I was wondering any tips on using Canon C100 continues focus. I find it hard sometimes to get the camera focus on subject while it focuses on the background. Even my subject is right the middle of the screen.

Thanks! My best advice for autofocus is to expose the image as brightly as possible (without blowing anything out) as I find that’s when it performs best

Hi, Ive recently purchased a ninja v to pair with my c100mkii, but i have ran into a problem where it seems to only output at 108050i no matter if the camera is set to 25p, the ninja v says the input is 50i, any ideas as to why that may be ? thanks

Depending the workflow, most will not need prores if you’re mainly producing content for online. Also, these comparisons, will great, will be hardly noticeable on RUclips due to compression. Thanks for the video!

Love your videos. Always well thought out and very thorough. I was just thinking, wouldn't prores 422 be the appropriate codec and wouldn't it offer even better image quality?

The C100 mark II outputs uncompressed 4:2:2 video, and the Atomos recorder decides which codec. I also have the Atomos Ninja Inferno and yes, it supports Prores HQ
