The James McKenna pic is early Tim Bradstreet. He got his start doing tabletop gaming stuff in the late 1980s; his stuff for 1st and 2nd Edition Shadowrun, 1st and 2nd Edition Vampire: The Masquerade, and TORG is what got him to the attention of Marvel and DC Comics. You can see how fast he came into his signature style between that McKenna pic in '88 vs. his VTM work '91.
"He's got two Aces and what I think is a B." There is a B in Poker, at least in German, where the "Jack" is called "Bube" and therefore has a B instead of a J on the card face. Since German is one of the official languages in Steiner space, they might just have played poker with a Steiner deck, which would use the German card faces. Fun fact about that: This would be the german version of the french deck, which is indeed really widely used in germany. The traditional german deck, which is not really used in poker but still somewhat popular in german card games like Skat (yes, really), would have Unter ("underling") and Ober ("superior") instead of Bube (Jack) and Dame (Queen). It also features other colours. Green leaves instead of spades, oak nuts (filling for clubs), bells (yellow, filling for diamonds) and hearts.
Can confirm: Clanners are tryhard gamer bros who fight war for leaderboard standings. Ask any staff officer friend you've got how effective that can be.
If I may be so bold; Clanners are not even good at battles, which are an essential part of war, a matter in which they have also shown complete ineptitude. What they are good at, all they are good at, is highly ritualized personal combat. Though such an engagement is technically a battle, it is not anything even resembling actual warfare and, at best, their version of combat most closely resembles ritualized training. Both sides commit forces knowing fully the composition and disposition of their enemies troops while also setting location and time... that is *NOT* warfare, that is a wargame. In fact, that's not even a wargame, that is a doggone training exercise with live munitions, where life and limb is at stake, which makes them, Clanners, not only bad at warfare, but also suicidally stupid to boot. I could go on, but I believe I have made my point. Tukayyid. The clans where written to be stupid on purpose.
Tex, enjoyed the after show, thank you. The "Got a Match, Sailor?" is one of my favorite BT short stories. If I remember correctly it originally showed up in the intro section of CITYTECH (the urban combat supplement), its about a merc infantry unit taking on a couple scout mechs in an industrial sized bakery.
I'm imagining huge clouds of flour obscuring vision and mechs breaching a vat of liquid and getting immobilized in a flood of chocolate frosting. "In the previous battle, the enemy had shredded my Locust. Now they would learn that revenge is a dish best served with unlimited breadsticks."

The merc unit (The Black Cats) emptied the lard vats and let Newton and his Laws of Motion do the rest, once the mechs learned that gravity wasn't their friend, the mercs torched the lard and let it cook off the enemies' ammo. One of them comments as they leave, "It smelled like all the mess halls in the Inner Sphere rolled into one." Note: I recently found the story again (I messed up the title) and it is called "When Black Cats Cross Your Path" by Tara Gallagher and James Lanigan. It can be found in the anthology "Shrapnel" and "Mechwarrior, 2nd Ed." RPG rulebook.
Battletechnology was sort on in canon fan magazine. There was also Stardrive that was more sci-fi with some Battletech. I remember that Stardrive had the original Pillager a 3/5/2 dual AC20s. An interesting fact was that Battletechnology had the preludes to the 4th Succession War with the Operation Galahads. It was so obvious after the fact.
So Tex, one of the reasons the Battletechnology mag did Star Trek is FASA had a ST board game similar to battle space but a bit simpler. As well as a really shaky RPG offering to go with it. It has all the art, proof reading and quality assurance we come to know and expect from the 80s era FASA too...
funny story, I bought an original Calico, and Calico Light Weapons Systems is back in operation. fun little gun. the stock folds up under the rear of the rifle.

The Royal units were formerly the Hegemony Armed Forces, so while the Star League kept the known universe in line, the Hegemony could still keep the Star League in line. See most of the Sucessor Lords were perfectly happy for the Hegemony to be swept away
There were some great magazines that included Battletech stuff. Battletechnology, Commando Quarterly, Future Wars, Mech, Solaris Sentinel, and The Tech Factory were all magazines that included Battletech stuff. One of the early early issues of Future Wars had an article about rules for the mechs and vehicles in the 3025 and 3026 Tech Readouts based on the description and drawing of the mech or vehicle. Battletechnology was treated as it was normal news magazine, including ads. Battletechnology issue 15 has one of my favorite Battletech stories, Tales of the Cobalt Coil #4: Reflections of Battle! Stackpole was given a list of 5 names of characters that couldn't be killed, but otherwise He was given permission to kill anyone else he wanted while writing the 4th Succession War novels.
As for the James McKenna pic, he's meant to look possibly-crazy, and in-universe, they probably don't have a lot of widely available media of peopke from 700 years earlier

Tex. in Japan they have life sized Gundams all over the country. the one i saw was atleast 25 m and had a projector showing the anime on the side of the mall. it was awesome. i wish we could have that in western society with battle mechs. Tex, you should watch G Gundam. It is one of the highest forms of mechary possible. Also, if anyone ever asks you which Gundam you prefer, just say "Ultimate Gundam" for ridiculous overpowered nonsense, "Maxter Gundam" for undiluted cheese, "Tequila Gundam" for booze, or -Nether Gundam- -Holland Gundam- _WINDMILL GUNDAM!!!_ if you seek an unassailable position. No, I'm serious, those are all Gundams, and all from G Gundam. It is unrivaled, and should be enshrined in your heart right beside Fiesta Pail.
Whilst Gundam and BattleTech both have Mecha, they're quite different in other ways. BattleTech is about the limitations, Gundam is about the super-pilot with psionic powers.
Probably a mix of Omegas for light bodyguard duty, and Orcas for not caring how much faster the other guys are, maybe with some support crews in Destriers to haul around stuff and redecorate any architecture or landscaping that offended the tastes of their noble charges. And yes, I _am_ imagining a Destrier with an oversized pair of hedge clippers mounted to one of the turrets. Probably pulling around a small restaurant on a trailer.

Short answer: Comstar is / was the last instituiton left over from the Star League. Before the name change it was the Star League Ministry of Communication but after the fall of the League it was renamed to reflect it's business side (and it was supposed to be a neutral party but that went out of the window very very fast) I could write more but that would make this whole answer explode.
you forgot that although the laser rifle takes 36 hrs to charge you can just swap out the power cell HOWEVER that power cell is nearly half the weight of the fucking firearm..... and if the 2.2 kg cell is only 100ish shots..... wtf would a .4 kg alternative cell be good for???

Whilst Gundam and BattleTech both have Mecha, they're quite different in other ways. BattleTech is about the limitations, Gundam is about the super-pilot with psionic powers.

Probably a mix of Omegas for light bodyguard duty, and Orcas for not caring how much faster the other guys are, maybe with some support crews in Destriers to haul around stuff and redecorate any architecture or landscaping that offended the tastes of their noble charges.

Short answer: Comstar is / was the last instituiton left over from the Star League. Before the name change it was the Star League Ministry of Communication but after the fall of the League it was renamed to reflect it's business side (and it was supposed to be a neutral party but that went out of the window very very fast) I could write more but that would make this whole answer explode.

you forgot that although the laser rifle takes 36 hrs to charge you can just swap out the power cell
HOWEVER that power cell is nearly half the weight of the fucking firearm..... and if the 2.2 kg cell is only 100ish shots..... wtf would a .4 kg alternative cell be good for???
