India could be due to the sheer number of people. It's not that uncommon honestly and for people who say they've never met someone gay in india, well, there's a lot of people who choose not to come out because of the attitude towards the lgbt community in the country. And besides, everyone is aware of the trans population in the country. It's pretty big. So india does actually make sense.

I feel that the actual percentage won't vary that much and should be fairly constant. The number of people in denial due to the pressures of society, taught/learnt self-loathing that may sometimes maifest as homophobia, would actually skew the proportion somewhat during a self-reporting type survey.
We must also take into account how exactly the figures are being collected and what inherent biases may be introduced. It's extremely easy for a gay person in denial to claim being straight during the survey or even a straight guy just for the fun of it, if the survey is completely anonymous, report erroneously as being gay.
There is no "gay," test that I know of. And if there is an interviewer of some sort, that person can't simply mark a person as a lesbian just because she's a tomboy nor should the interviewer mark a guy as gay simply because he has a soft speaking tone.
As a proud Indian, I can say i have not met a single LGBTQ person in my life. But we sure do have LG TV LG mobile and LG fridge etc

Like we ALL know how heavily populated India is, and how LARGE it is to the point it’s a subcontinent. So to see a 17% rate shouldn’t be that surprising since there are so many people and such broadly different parts of India.
Like I’m an Indian myself (was even born in Chennai), and even I know that with the current education and acceptance of being a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, that more people around the world will be able to identify within this group thanks to having the knowledge. And you also have to acknowledge just how different the cultures can be in the north and southern territories of India. People would find it to be more accepted and generalized (being non cis-het) in a province like New Delhi compared to Kerala or Tamilmadu.

I mean, most of the LGBTQ+ will not cry on every corner they are LGBTQ+... Most trans people, once they finished their transition, are difficult to identify from cis peopele, and its logical for them to not say "Hey i'm trans" to everyone. And when you are homo/bi, some will smack in public, like hetero couples, but most will not, like most hetero couples. So you encounter members of this community on a daily basis without realizing it, like you encounter left handed people without even knowing it (and they are still easier to identify...)
