  • Just a little update about the guppies in my Tanks. Getting rid of alot of the red tailed - blue dot ones and moving on to different colors/tail lengths. Having a community tank is kind of like a surprise gift, you'll never know what you're going to get!

I used to do it exactly like you. I would fish out the babies and put them in a grow out tank. Then I gave up and then let nature take it's course. And still had PLENTY of babies and guppies. LOL. Hey if you want different colors then you need to pull out the females and then buy some new females to put into the gene pool. I'm not sure if you know this but females can hold back sperm from different males, or the same male, for up to 7 months. So if you buy a female that's old enough from someone who has them in with males, then she's going to be pregnant. But if she doesn't give birth right away it's because she's choosing to hold onto her eggs. Now this doesn't happen alot. But I had one female that was huge. But didn't give birth for 3 months. Whew. But I digress. Sorry. I do that when talking about guppies. Hehehe. Yeah, if you want different colors then you need to mix the gene pool every so often. My guppies all wound up looking the same after about 6 months. But that was ok cause they were gorgeous and the local fish store that I was selling them to loved them and so did his customers. And I found that people would buy a pregnant female before they would a male. 🤷🤷🤷. But my guppies we're huge. My females were 3 inches long and my males were between 2-2 and a half inches. So I hope some of this info helps you. If it's stuff you already knew, then please don't be offended. I'm just trying to help AND talk a little guppies with someone.😉

Great info! Yes, occasionally if my LFS has a nice plump female or a really cool male, ill typically pick it up and throw it in. A lot of the different colors I've been getting are likely from the stored sperm as they can hold enough for 7-8 pregnancies! Iv'e recently been getting some small finned white/platinum males, which is pretty cool! But yea, I'm just letting them have the time of their lives in there and once in a while introduce an outside-sourced guppy if I like its genetics.

What is the plant that is carpeting the guppy grow-out tank?

unfortunately i am not entirely sure, it seems to of either been a mutation of a plant i had purchased prior, or maybe there were some seeds on the plant i purchased that i did not know of... we purchased some ludwigia and baby dwarf tears a long while back, and out of nowhere this stuff just starting spreading like a vine-system through my sandy substrate and sprouted upwards. there is an enormous root/vine system beneath the carpet... i wish i could tell you the real name as it has been asked many times but... it is definitely not what i had ordered, but a great addition non-the-less!

@@AKNorthernAquariums It looks great, you can guarantee that if you tried to grow it as a carpet it wouldn't happen, just one of life's fortunate accidents.

@@AKNorthernAquariums It looks like dwarf baby tears. And the vine system is called runners. Most carpeting plants grow on a runner system and this is how it spreads. Each individual plant will shoot out a runner that has like 15 or 20 plants that will grow on that one runner. And that's how it spreads over the whole tank. And if you ever pull it all out, if you leave even one small one, then in time, this will happen all over again. Pretty cool uh?

@@cathyhendrix7552 that is pretty cool, very unitended when i purchased whatever this was, but i am quite fond of it now, and creates a great hiding spot for babies/egg layers. i have this in a couple of my tanks now!

@@AKNorthernAquariums Oh yeah, it propagates real easy. You just pull some up and snip it at the nodules on both ends and then stick the runner in the substrate of the other tank and then wait. It might melt back a little but once it recuperates from the transplant, it will set it's roots in the substrate and start growing runners. I absolutely LOVE live plants in tanks. I think that the tank looks healthier and the fish look better against the backdrop of the green live plants. The fish love the live plants to. Or seem to. At least to me. The only plants that I don't really care for are the different sword plants. And the only reason is because they take sooooo long to grow. UGH. But once they finally grow out their gorgeous. I prefer the deep green ones. Like the Amazon swords. But my absolute favorite plant is the aponagetin ulvacious. It's gorgeous with long curly leaves that are a very light bright green, and they will grow across the top of the water of the tank. They will get shooters that go to the top and will flower also. But I discovered that you need a very large tank for it. I planted it at the back of my tank about at the middle. And in a very short time it took over my 20 gallon long. At least at the top. I could barely get a net down through it to be able to catch a fish. Aaaah but it looked fantastic. Someone told me to trim it back and I must not have done it right and it started dying. So for a plant like that I would recommend at least a 75 gallon tall. Or learn the correct way of cutting it back. Oh, look, I'm digressing again. I'm ever so sorry. Have a wonderful holiday season and a great time with your tanks. Your family to. LOL 😆.
