A mode I actually forgot about for a while. Yes I agree that it was a major pain with the unnecessary switching Mid combat to a new wave. It was a ton of team constraining just for minor rewards. However, in retrospect, I think it was more of a test the waters mode that I think eventually evolved into Mjolnir’s Strike. It became mostly a monthly mainstay mode and it plays very similarly to Relay Defense.
I'm actually sad that Tap Battles were removed. I like rhythm games and I liked being able to play to some of my favorite songs in the series (The orchestral Three Houses main theme (NOT Edge of Dawn), Twilight of the Gods, Heritors of Arcadia) while earning orbs. But they've been slowly choking the life out of any kind of game modes that include Orb rewards (Save for Hall of Forms and Heroes Journeys).
That one tap battle with the mirage fe songs was freaking fire! They have to bring that one back. Also, as long as the game mode doesn’t allow overpowered new units and whales I am game.
I would be on board for any mode that caps merges. I quit trying to tier up in arena and aether raids because F2p just can’t keep up with all the whaling.
@@surrealmeme8344 I feel this, especially in Summoner Duels. Oh, you want to play with your favorite but out-dated units? You like using Silas? Fuck you, Brave Eirika. Every team in the Duels is the exact same, with little to no proper counters.
I actually switched to the JP dub (which means text as well) just for that event for the extra immersion. If it returns, I’ll play it in English to find out what the dialogue said.
Loving these videos bringing me PTSD on poor decisions by the devs can't wait for more, specially getting into those units/banners who shifted the meta around them changing the game drastically
Remember the first day of Frontline Phalanx that lasted less than a day ... Which meant that none had acces to the other free rewards ? I do and i laughed hard ... Also you forgot to mention THE BEST mode that is miolnir strike aka auto battle mode and Rokk siege which just is big numbers but funny. More seriously i love your videos and these are a good time capsule if it even make sense.
I had no idea people disliked pawns of loki also had no idea it began when you could encounter player-owned units, I think the mode is neat, same thing that I thought with Aether Raids, right before they introduced the scoring BS, was enjoying it right before that addition.
To be fair, everyone loved the very first Pawns of Loki as the opponents were not player owned whale units or scum team setups then IS had to make it PVP....
I was honestly expecting Tap Battle to be much faster paced like an actual rhythm game. But if it were faster than the player base would complain it's too hard or something.
Honestly I do feel that Relay Defense was a little overhated. It had a bad start but one the final one that I we got, I actually had to think twice about my brigade. I even made one section of my brigade, got to the point where they swapped, took a screencap on my phone, exited, then built the next part of the brigade with units that could handle the current task. I would be interested if this mode were to come back at some point especially with how much powercreep and extra options we've gotten in the past four years. I'd take this mode again over something like Frontline Philanx or Voting Guantlet
It would've worked so much better in today's meta. Back them things were too simple and it was really a matter of the enemy just simply have too high of stats to do anything. This mode going away though was what gave me hope they'd just can summoner duels and aether raids. Still waiting for that day
I don't think Aether Raids are going away soon, seeing that it's the one being pushed as the "main competitive mode" rather than Arena nowadays. Arena feels to "whale-ey" for it's entry bar needing to have +10 units for max scoring whereas AR usually just needs you to have some units and some mythics, even using the free ones usually is just enough in terms of scoring. Climbing though, you need to think about insane strats and look up rally traps and movement traps and all that stuff to really climb the ranks which is confusing. There's a whole discord server dedicated to AR though, Asgardian Workshop is filled with most of the top players like Pheonix, Promise and some others and they usually help out when having trouble setting up defenses. Now with the added Chaos season, AR climbing is actually easier than ever, even my F2P friend who is usually stuck in VoH is now starting to get his red chairs. I might sound like I'm defending AR, but tbh I don't really care enough about the comp modes, I'm just a hypercasual, upgrading the characters i like and playing FEH in my own pace. But if they're canning a gamemode, it's definitely not AR, the gamemode has too much active players to be canned. TL;DR: Arena is a whale show-off stage, AR is actually way more accessible than people thought, and has too much active players to just die.
With the amount of powercreep now, I am curious if we can actually take out these old 99 hp, +12 spectrum stat characters with our heavy merge projects and +10 friends. I'd be down for it. Unfortunately it was ran only 3 times ever, right? Just don't let it become pvp.. lmao
Bro, this mode may have been ludicrous back then , but with the powerhouses we have now, I wish they brought it back with the crazy stat bonuses they got. Only change that would make it worthwhile is to not force swap your teams.
I was thinking at first that it could be fine to bring it back nowadays but after seeing the comment about saves i have doubts, like can you imagine F!Edelgard boosted with that game logic ? i'd be tough to contain lmao but it could be cool but for newer player it's would be even rougher, i'm mostly into it because most of my friendlist is made of +10 so i could just roll on the mode itself tbh but when it comes to newer ppl it's gonna be hard for sure
Given we have Mjolnir's Strike now, and that mode comes around on a fairly regular basis...and that mode basically is doing the same exact thing Relay Defense did (defend specific structures, wave upon wave of enemies spawn in every round, a set number of rounds to survive) but added additional things to it (structures to use to help your team, allowing use of your own Summoner to participate in the fight)....I think it's safe to say Relay Defense is never coming back and they basically just replaced it with Mjolnir's Strike (which I prefer since Mjolnir's Strike at least gives consistent rewards every single time it comes around, and the rewards are resources that anyone can use (tbh, I don't even remember what the rewards were in Relay Defense, if there were rewards at all XD))
yeah, i remember this game mode Back then, i hated it cause i didnt really have that many 5 stars to use and the ones i did have were either juts 4 stars upgraded or the 5 star ones that did not have the best base kit at start. I think now i would like it more since i do have a lot more 5 stars and with trace skills, it might be a bit easier to defend.
Hey, it'll come back some day just give it time... Any day now... Same with tap battle. I actually completely forgot that legendary Marth was out at this time.
So I think we DID get relay defense in a sense. I mean two objectives to defend with a swapping team sounds a lot like Mjolnir’s Strike, aka Aether Raids but PvE.
I never got to play that one. It doesn't look bad if you tone down the stat inflation. I would definitely take it over Tap Battle if they're never making new content for it. As much as I hate Frontline Failanx, it gives orbs. Tap Battle reruns don't.
The game needs more difficult PVE options that don't involve player units. Right now, the most difficult game mode that's always available that doesn't have player units is....... chain challenge? Squad assault if you don't have a lot of good units? We need some PVE powercreep...
IMO, player teams. I guess in max difficulty, it can mess up any run with gross team builds (Edelgards, cows, the season’s powercreep unit). Even in medium you could get unlucky. Also, the reward list seems more thought towards the one and dones. Although I forget to play it, I do like it from a casual pov.

Relay Defense walked so Mjölnir’s Strike could run.
