Got my lefty yesterday...now I have sore fingers! I agree...pups are great...but not as chimey/clarity as what I get from 'boutique' pups like LSL handwound, or Fralin/Lollar....but VERY decent and a nice tonal bouquet....and still very stratty.
Putting the Ron Ellis pickups on was a great idea. They are about the best you can get on the planet right now. I did the same thing on an inexpensive guitar. Why not maximise your sound!
Yeah it sounds good! The different isn’t night and day. But certainly a little warmer and the in between positions sound exactly like they should with that nice quack.
Yeah, the stock pickups are still pretty darn good to my ears; probably helps that you're playing through a two-rock amp. If the Ron Ellis pickups were more affordable, then maybe worth doing the swap. Otherwise, I would be happy with everything stock as is. Always enjoy your demos! 👍
Absolutely agree. The difference isn’t night and day. Not even close. The stock pickups are good enough and if that sharp top end bothers there are always more affordable pickups that are also excellent. Impressive guitar, really. And the amp is the basis to any and all tone, in my opinion. I should do a video about this. There are plenty but you know, it’s always useful to remind how important the amp is, more important than anything else!
@@argbluesman I installed some Klein 62 pickups in my strat which cost below $300 and sounds great so that would be something I would consider on this type of guitar if I wanted to swap it out. Yeah, your amps are killer and could probably make most pickups sound better. Good stuff Federico!
Excellent video. A question. When you refer to metallic sound in the high frequencies, are you referring to what some call "glassy"?. Thanks for answering.
Yeah, well, it's difficult to describe tone with words. Just like it's difficult to describe flavors with words in detail. There are glassy tones that are pleasant. Some plain enamel pickups have that type of tone, but it is a nice glassy, nice top end. In this case, I was hearing something not so pleasing in the top end, that's what I was calling metallic, because to my ears it sounded kinda metallic. I tried the guitar through all amps, and I was hearing the same thing. I feel that the Ellis set fixed that, and it complemented the tone nicely, with warmer/rounder results.
The sound is not only in the pickups. It’s the whole thing. You will get Mayer tones with any 60s pickups. The most important thing really is the amp. Not the pickups. Not the pedals or anything else.
I think the stock pickups are good enough to get to the JM tone bullpark, its more up to the amp/od setup in order to get closer. If you want better pickups just buy a core. My 5 cent. Great demo tho.
It is 100% about the amp, of course. He, and any guitar player, will sound like himself regardless or pickups. I mentioned the John Mayer sound because that’s the John Mayer guitar and Ron Ellis used to write that these pickups “have the jm tone” in his spec sheet back in the day. And “better” is a subjective term. It’s more of a matter of taste. The pickups are perfectly fine. Thanks for commenting!
Those Ron Ellis pups made the SE Silver Sky sound more like the Core model. It’s a keeper. Thanks for sharing the experiment. Great playing as always!
Thanks a lot man! I appreciate it.

Man the Ron Ellis pickups sound great! The stock ones aren't bad either! Thanks for the comparison man!
Agreed! Thanks a lot man!

Great video. I was curious what it would sound like with Ellis pups. Sounds killer!

Agreed. Klein makes amazing pickups 👍 as always, thanks for the support.

Any alternatives for re50/60? Really like how it sounds but its a bit pricey

Easy decision on which pickups I prefer ...RE50/60s !!
However the difference isn’t night and day. The stock pickups are absolutely fine at the end of the day after this experiment.

Just buy a real guitar.
Oh let’s see. Why don’t you explain a bit for us? This isn’t a real guitar?
That comment is ridiculous!
