    Ty for reviewing this case. I think this is going to be a gem that the DIY community is going to love.

    In all sincerity, you are one of the few tech reviewers that never wastes my time, and I appreciate the time and effort you put in to your builds, reviews and videos. That having been said, my wife is not as fond of you, as you cost HER money (my money!). Going to build in this case, been meaning to update a modest TrueNas build that also is hitting it's limits. I use 12 TB "refurb" drives from Amazon, normally HGST or WD Gold. Give me a few weeks to build it, and will come back and attach pics!

    Mine should arrive Wednesday. First NAS build and I think this will help a LOT.

    Bought one after seeing your video (my NAS was overdue for an upgrade).
    Build quality is impeccable, and it is gorgeous.
    The instructions are a bit lacking (I still have a bunch of screws that I have no idea what they're for), and the order of operations is strange (why is manual saying to stick the filters AFTER installing everything, it makes no sense)
    The space between the 4x drive bay and the PSU is TIGHT on mine, I have had to use quite a bit of strength to get everything to fit.
    Plugging in the whole backplane from the back was also a bit of a pain, but manageable.
    Airflow seems good for now (all bay populated, I'm at 40°C on full load with no tweaking of the fans).
    Also, you are right : only using 4 rubber thingies is much smoother for the drives than using all 6. and I also wished they'd gone with actual trays. I guess it's a space constraint more than anything else.
    Overall : good stuff !

    I love the N1. Been running it for over a year and it's been great. But I want more hardware in the future. This could be the right case.

    Is the A2000 *only* for your media server transcoding? (If so) I'm surprised you hadn't switched to an Intel Arc A310/A380 card for AV1 encoding support. I know plex doesn't support AV1 yet but the resale value of the A2000 allows one to replace it with an ARC card AND have money for more drives/other server upgrades. I recently did this exact thing paired with a switch to Jellyfin to leverage the AV1 functionality.

    • @iroesstrongarm
      @iroesstrongarm Месяц назад +2

      I'm not sure the 2990wx supports rebar. From what research I could manage in the past, it seems the Arc cards will encode one stream really well without it, but two simultaneously and the performance apparently tanks.

    • @ElevatedSystems
      @ElevatedSystems  Месяц назад +5

      The transcoding workload is for my footage ingestion, not for media. All my BRAW and Prores raw footage gets transcoded to HEVC as it enters the server prior to cataloging and archiving.

    Thanks for taking the time to produce this review, however, don’t let the lack of a reset button worry you. If you need to use a reset button on your server, then the lack of the button isn’t your biggest problem.

    I considered getting this case, but decided to go with the jmcd. Like you mentioned, the biggest downside of the jmcd is the size limits for the cooler and the gpu.

    I've been looking to build in this case for a while. There are not many options for E-ATX motherboards with a lot of drive bays. The only thing holding me back right now is the uncertainty of the backplane compatibility with SAS drives. I can see in the pictures that they could fit on the backplane, but not sure if SFF to sata cables would actually carry out SAS signals to the drives. I don't think anyone has tried that so I thought maybe you could expand a little on that?

    I have actually been looking for a case like this as I game on my PC but also run a plex server off of it too and I am currently out of storage slots as i need to add more drives. I currently have a thermaltake core v21 cube case so this isn't much bigger area wise than what i currently have.

    Does this case even have competition ? Are there other ATX cases with hotswap bays that aren't rack mounted ?

    • @ElevatedSystems
      @ElevatedSystems  Месяц назад +1

      Silverstone makes a few, they max out at 8 bays I think, and one from Corn just popped up in my Newegg suggestions that looks like a standard ATX tower with 10 hot swap bays. I may check that one out.

    I'm planning to build a small server too, but was wondering if i could have some advice. I noticed in your setup you had an RTX A2000, and i was also planning on using those originally , but for the jonsbo N4 as I didn't know the N5 was out. Now that with the N5 you have the option of adding full sized graphics cards i wanted to ask if you had a good recommendation on a not too overly expensive GPU dollar per vram kind off. To be able to use as a storage server / locally hosted language model , and homeassistant etc. My original plan would've been to get a 12GB A2000, and add another one later. In pair with a Ryzen 7 9700x and 4 sticks of 48GB Crucial DDR5 5600Mhz on a B650

    Pretty sure the backplane power is meant to be either Sata or molex not both.

    • @ElevatedSystems

      The 8 drives on the single backplane can draw about 10 more watts than I’d feel safe putting on a single SATA cable.

      Yes, exactly. Both SATA and Molex can safely power those drives, but Molex should be able to provide even more power.

    Shouldn't 1 Molex be able to power 4 HDDs? You shouldn't have to use both SATA and Molex, they are there just as extra options.

    • @ElevatedSystems
      @ElevatedSystems  15 дней назад

      Too many factors to consider. Does the 12V rail on the PSU the molex cable uses provide the max 10-11 Amps? Can the wiring used actually handle a full 120-132 watt load? What is the spin surge wattage of the drives used? Are you using spin-up surge staggering? I’m not powering 8 16-24 tb drives on 2 molex connections, and I’m definitely not doing it on a single cable.

  • @Snowman7.Z

    The cost might be a deal breaker, because I'm also having a hard time stomaching HexOS and they're $200-300 cost. Lets say I buy them now and not wait that's about $460+Tax&Shipping and all I have so far is a empty case and an OS.. Though I do have an old PC that I can repurpose I'll have to rebuy a cheap GPU because no dedicated graphics but most of those parts I believe should fit inside the N5.
    Clearly I'm a noob and could use some help, is roughly $500 good for a base NAS without the drives? And second I can start it up with 1 SSD(For OS) and 2 HDD is enough to set it up for raid?

    • @ElevatedSystems

      @EhEhEhEINSTEIN Месяц назад

      @@ElevatedSystems I guess I should've looked at the physical dimensions a little closer, N2 is about the same volume as the other cases I was looking at, despite taking a larger PSU. It is almost double the price.. but having built a friend a PC in a D31, I know I'll be much happier with the Jonsbo in the long run.
