*REGARDING THE SOUND* How MASSIVELY annoying! Thanks to those who have spotted this (especially at 2:26-2:29) and messaged me. Had a cluster F of audio issues in the studio last week (and this one tbh) as I discovered that my main mic was screwy - but as it was not noticeable on recordings under 1 min or so, it wasn't spotted till too late. Luckily I have a 2nd audio/mic on all recordings...but that one was running through OBS and clearly did not have local audio output muted. I would have pulled and retweaked, but between the Christmas break and then CES, I wanted to get this out to users who have planned their N5 arrival during their Christmas time off! Have a brilliant 'last few days of 2024 , and an incredible 2025!
Cheers guys. And apologies to anyone watching this video who briefly checked their mail, browser, phones, etc for what the notification was...complete dick move, I know...
I noticed recently that windows, after an update, decided to turn the volume up on some of the things I had turned down. Is set the volume to 1 percent, and then mute them. Thanks again windows.
One can also use an NVMe to Mini SAS 36 Pin SFF-8087 adapter. Might be a better choice than an NVMe to 6 Ports SATA III adapter with respect to cable clutter.
100000000% - you genius! I'll pin this comment later on, after my pinned comment re: the sound is up for a few days - add a link to an example adapter. Cheers man
I would love to use this. while it's not quite as compact as a few other options, being able to have more space for an atx board and even if I only want to use 4-6 drives, being able to install a couple more spares for future use would be awesome.
Bought my N5 in October (received November) from Ali Express. After the tax (free shipping) and Cash Back Offer(s), the N5 was $152.00 USD. I can post a PC Part Picker list, if anyone is interested.
Personally, I use in combination with Jonsbo N5 motherboard from MSI B450 GAMING PLUS MAX, where are a lot of PCIE connectors and to the m2 slot (pcie 3.0 x4) i have connected via open adapter (nvme -> pcie) LSI HBA for 8 HDD. The line speed is sufficient given the speed of mechanical disks. Now i'm working on Jonsbo N3 with Jginyue b450i-plus from Ali with two m2 slots. Both will be on Unraid.
Just replace them with Noctua. The rest can be tweaked in the BIOS. Maybe a fan can be added to the cable hole where you can see a couple of 3,5 positions. But I haven't tried it.
Yeah, I've put a pinned comment on this, but in brief - hit a wiring fault at the office and it wasn't spotted till almost 4 days of different recordings, the week after! So the video affected have the backup microphone audio. The issue is that ambient/local audio from the recording pc in OBS was 'on', so it recorded notifications sounds!!! Suuuuuuuuper annoying. I removed several in post, but a few were unavoidable without breaking speech or build directions. Sorry for dropping the ball on this one!
unpopular opinion: the Jonsbo N5 engeneeed so badly (valume vs usage) that it horrible to look at. i mean, if you just rearrange the case, you can praticly get a 35 drive case. its almost duble the valume of mid tower case. Am i insane or am i missing somthing?
@@AABB-oi7hv basiclly every case from early 2000 with full 5.25 front.(ill admit: not allways outof the box) need spesific model? antec 300 (ant that wasnt even built to be for nas uses...)
@@Ben-lr9tp Good luck with adding and hot swapping 16 discs. Considering the quality of the case I'd be quite worried about cutting myself, not to mention the resonance of the case. @@AABB-oi7hv well, funny that you saying it while im right now with 1*5.25 bay with 4*2.5 and 2*5.25 with 3*3.5 with 2 of the same model for 3*5.25 to 5*3.5 on the way to me. so yeah, in the comming days i could even photo it for you if you dont belive it possible. but in any case, the antec is not the matter here, the fact that this case is with bad use for his volume he take is... but since you are stuck on my antec 300 v2, let me ask this: how can a case that take 1.5-2 times the space of the natec 300 is with the same capacity of hdd (out of the box) be considered as good?
Of course, I believe you that it is possible and you can send photos for interest. I prefer a ready-made solution than breaking an old case over my knee and doing many other modifications to it to make it usable. And to the question. The advantage of the N5 is just the space - you can put an E-ATX motherboard in there, accessibility of all components, far more fans than a standard case, quality workmanship and appearance (I have it in my living room) and it is very quiet with Noctua (up to 18dBi). You still have to consider what segment you are dealing with, which is SOHO and prosumers not businesses, which of course have other solutions.

I can't wait to replace my old NAS case to this N5. I have an old PC case now. I've been waiting on a case so I can use a ATX Mobo.
That notification sound at ~2:30 had me checking all my cables 🤣
lol same with me.. had to make sure the video was making that sound.
Sorry for the massive fail on that one guys. I'll be honest, I feel a right lemon...
@@nascompares I'll let is slide this time, since this channel helped me set up a brand new UGREEN NAS for the first time.
I'd highly advise a LSI SAS HBA over any "extra SATA port" card. You just need the right cables to connect the HBA to your drives.

@@thomaswilliams Guilty pleasure mate, we all do it.
Every time I see an ITX board inside N5 case I realise how huge the case is. Literally huge.

What link on Ali Express did you use?
Yes please
Can it handle SAS drives?

what cpu+mobo is used in the build? I can only see its a Hero board.
What PSU power rating would you recommend for a fully populated case?
I am afraid that the hard disk cooling is not good ? The HDD fans are also very loud. I will remove the wood in the front and install 140 mm fans

You need a spare room for that! My Mac mini would look silly next to that.
