Great review. Thinking about this one to try and wean my wife (and eventually my two year old, once he grows up) into Descent.

Those player mats with the slots that you were talking about are readily available on Etsy. Pretty affordable too. The new Stardcadia Quest version of the game also came with some plastic ones, but they are really cheap and flimsy.

Possibly my all time favourite game. I bought mine at retail, and therefore am missing the Kickstarter exclusives, which is a shame, but I think there’s enough in the base game to enjoy multiple play throughs of the campaign, choosing different scenarios each time, and using the characters you haven’t used yet. Also, I do have Beyond the Grave and Inferno, plus I backed Masmorra on Kickstarter which came with tonnes of extra characters, which somewhat makes up for my lack. Oh that’s right, I also have Pets and Riders now also... I haven’t even played everything yet! Starcadia Quest on its way sometime soon... I don’t think I’ll be lacking for replay ability!

It’s a great game for sure. Just a bit light in terms of core set scenarios meaning an expansion or two is a must which can (and has for me a least) become expensive.
An app like MoM and Descent would address this.

BoardGames4K that’s true... I do believe there are some PDF downloads for new scenarios (paper copies given to KS backers) re-using and combining the various core games and expansions to increase the quantity of scenarios possible. But, in the end, since each scenario is more based on who you are playing against and what characters you have, I don’t feel any issue with replaying scenarios I have seen before, especially since we intentionally choose different scenarios from campaign to campaign, so often it is weeks if not months between plays, so it doesn’t feel repetitive, even if it’s familiar. I could see you getting bored with the core 12 heroes however (if always playing 4 player campaigns), but I still think they are all solid, fun characters.
Like you... I’m not shelling out the aftermarket money for KS exclusives from the first campaign... though I almost got lucky enough on the CMON Time Machine, they sold out quickly. However, I did get the KS Extras for Inferno, and am looking forward to that!

@@BoardGameBollocks if you buy Inferno too you ll have more then enough scenarios :) and heroes. and items. My only complaint is, the game takes a whole day to play through the e campaign. But with the market phase it gives you the "ok i wanna try my new spell/weapon, so let's play one more round" feeling.

Yes mate, I also dislike that about a lot of Kickstarter bonuses... Two things:
    1) You have to know about the game before release, if you're late to the party then tough luck!
    2) You then have to take a punt on the game to get all the exclusive content. I don't like paying for something if there's a chance that it won't live up to our expectations. I've had my fingers burned by too many video games like that in the past.
Some companies do this right. You can still buy the Kickstarter promos afterwards at a slightly inflated rate. I don't mind that. I might get into Scythe one day and pick up the metal coins and realistic resources. I really don't understand why a games company would just lock this content away and not release it. They could do Hero/Monster packs for £10-£30 each and make a fortune (like FFG).
That said I might give this a go after I'm done completing Descent 2E. However the base set is expensive, as are the expansions. If we want a wholesome deal here we're looking at up to €200. :(

Worth grabbing the core set just to see...its great but if it’s not your bag you can shift it on easy.

Don't own Arcadia but just had my first playthrough of Starcadia and agree 100% with the line of sight rules being the only thing I didn't quite get. Maybe I'm stupid to. Love the game though and think I'll get only the pets expansion from Arcadia to use with Starcadia cause they are just freaking adorable. Not sure why I've managed to find almost everything Starcadia for at least 50% off when it's arguably superior to Arcadia. Maybe fantasy theme is more popular? Right now pvp expansion and robots are going for $11 on Amazon.
