  • In this RUclips Live I discuss strategies for practicing your instrument. How to organize your time between, scales, arpeggios and chords to practice musically. If you have limited time to practice you need to spend it on the right things. Always use your practice materials in musical ways. Don't just run scales and arpeggios up and down your instrument! Always make music even when you practice!

I also tend to like people who start the video in a pretty efficient manner, I think the internet has conditioned me (a good thing, I like to think) into being able to focus on what’s rapidly worthy, and so the old model of teaching where the teacher mobilizes my schedule just because I need to sit and wait for the teacher to be ready is obviously something (I hope) the kids from the upcoming generations will never get to taste. But great video, it indeed starts after 5 minutes of content having little to no correlation with the title unfortunately... cheers.

I had a teacher tell me a great story once about a conversation he had with Mike Stern. He said he asked Mike if he could recommend some good books and Mike says to him -- "Man....if you transcribe you won't need any books."
I really needed to hear "Practice what you don't know". Such great advice, thanks for all your great videos.

I'm a big fan of your channel, Rick! I love the part about Michael Brecker saying that it takes months of practice to work a new thing into one's playing. In 'Effortless Mastery', Kenny Werner wrote this can take 6 months to a year, and to constantly look for improvement leads to more frustration. It certainly has for me when I fall into that trap. I do my best not to practice on stage and trust that my hard work will pay off down the road.

Your unique covering so many topics music are the best videos series on this subject I've seen and/or subscribe to and I've seen many, many of them. Thanks for helping me explain to my students why and how to practice.
