Stuffing a 5.2L V8 into a Jeep Wrangler - Project Introduction | V8 TJ Part 1

  • This is the first video in a project series where I show you what it took to install a Dodge 5.2L(318 c.i.) V8 into a Jeep Wrangler. The process would have been exactly the same for a 5.9L(360 c.i.) V8 as well.
    I found scattered information across the internet and I hope to compile what information I did find and shed some light on the process of swapping a Magnum engine into a Jeep Wrangler for those who choose to follow in the same footsteps.
    The biggest and best resource I came across during the swap was on a JeepForum thread: www.jeepforum.c...

    Must be a sweet drive… I had both a 97 4.0L Grand Cherokee ZJ and a 96 5.2L Grand Cherokee ZJ and let me tell you… the difference in mpg was barely noticeable but in power and the driving experience was night and day… plus the V8 came from the factory with an engine oils cooler, transmission fluid cooler and way higher towing rating. Jeep should have made a V8 TJ. 😎

    Hey great v8 swap! I'm in the process of a 5.2 swap too, the only thing that keeps me from doing it (besides corona) is the wiring harness part. Once your are done with the wiring for the engine, what do i have to do with the other electronic components? If i do an standalone wiring harness with working gauges, will i need another harness for things like parking lights interior and exterior lights blinkers etc or after the engine part done i have to add more wiring to the new engine pcm? I'm totally new with this i think i'm running in circles for nothing 😅😅😅 thanks in advance

    • @dironaa
      @dironaa  4 года назад +3

      No extra wiring needed, that’s the beauty of this swap! Splice the V8 engine connectors (and transmission connectors if you’re installing an auto) into the jeeps engine wiring harness, swap in the v8 pcm, and you’re done, no other wiring mods needed. Easier said than done, but probably one of the most simple modern engine swaps you’ll find. Just make sure your jeep and the donor pcm have the same interface style (CCD vs PCI)

      I basically took all the vac line pieces from the TJ and from the donor vehicle and pieced them together as needed. No real rhyme or reason to it other than connecting them together as cleanly and organized as possible.

      I can’t give much info on swapping into a YJ, but more than likely your YJ is running an OBD1 diagnostic system, so at the least I’d probably try to find a donor with OBD1. OBD2 came into play around 1996. Beyond that I’d do some searching at jeepforum.com and see if there’s any info from others who have done the swap.

    Great job! I love putting different engines in vehicles that didn't have said engine in there especially, if it's some sort of v8.
    I'm conceptualizing a build for this winter on a 2003 liberty. I love that you made it look like a factory install and the "practical" side of you thought about gas mileage. I'm mulling over the same points either using a durango/grand cherokee 4.7l, or 5l ford. The 4.7 is the same engine family as the present 3.7. However, 5l fords are tried and true. And, both being small v8s (hopefully) will net better gas mileage. The other reason for those 2 vs the 4.8l LS is the physical size. The ford is smaller all the way around. I haven't found exterior dimensions of the dodge 4.7 tho.

    • @dironaa

    • @dironaa
      @dironaa  2 года назад

    This is a great video and probably the cleanest "factory" build I've seen. My question is about engine placement. What mounts did you use? Most people use AA mounts but ignore their placement instructions, and scoot the engine back as far as they can to avoid having to adjust driveshafts and transmission mounts. Personally I think that's ludicrous, but yours looks like it's properly placed. Just wondering if they were AA mounts in the recommended position. Thanks!

    • @dironaa
      @dironaa  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks. Yeah, they are the AA mount placed in their recommended position. Have plenty of access to the engine/engine bay from all sides with this placement, losing that wasn't worth saving a few bucks on driveshafts to me.

    Why on earth would anyone swap a wore out engine into anything??? It would be a simple matter to rebuild it before you install it. Now you get to take it out, rebuild and reinstall.

    • @dironaa
      @dironaa  6 лет назад +3

      Good question. In the back of my mind I never really planned on keeping this engine. I'd like to build either a 5.2 or 5.9 from the block up with a mild cam and some performance mods but wasn't willing to dump that money into the engine before knowing for sure that I'd be able to make the swap work. In reality pulling and installing the engine was one of the easiest parts of this swap...the wiring, fabrication, and adapting of non-standard parts is what took 98% of the time and effort involved.
      Swapping a rebuilt engine with the one currently installed should only be 3-4 hr for removal and the same for install, which is next to nothing compared to the mass amount of time involved in the swap as a whole.
      The short version: for me, it made the most sense at the time.

Then from the evaporator to a 98 dodge Dakota drier. From the drier back to the ac pump will be a female to female ends. Went on eBay and found the crimp on male end for the ac line. I cut the hose to length and had the end crimped on at o’Reillys. Now the heater box out of a xj is the same as a Tj. So if you want the 100% right box then junk yard a 97 plus xj.
